Edgar Whiney is the secondary antagonist of the 1976 film, Silver Streak. He is Roger Devereau's chief henchman.

He was portrayed by the late Ray Walston.

Biography[]

Whiney accompanies Roger Devereau on the Silver Streak in Los Angeles, California along with Johnson and Reace. They were hired by Devereau to hold Professor Arthur Schreiner hostage so they could steal some forged Rembrandt letters that were in the professor's possession before killing him and making their escape in Rockdale, Illinois. However, things start to go wrong when Reace kills the professor, and his body is discovered by George Caldwell.

The next morning, Whiney and Reace search the professor's compartment when they are met by George, who is immediately thrown off the train by Reace.

Whiney meets George again along with Devereau and Johnson (who was posing as Schreiner) to trick him into thinking George was seeing things before holding Hilly hostage. He later has Reace try to kill George, but as the train goes through a tunnel, A federal agent named Stevens was shot and killed instead. When Whiney sees George still alive, he orders Reace to go after him.

After George gets back on the train again, Whiney finds George and knocks him out. After George wakes up, Whiney orders him and Hilly to join Devereau in the dining car and Whiney is tasked with putting the letters in Devereau's safe in the baggage car. He is then held at gunpoint along with Devereau by George and Grover Muldoon as they attempt to retrieve the letters. Just then, Johnson arrives, and a gunfight ensues, forcing George and Grover to jump off the train.

Shortly after, Whiney and Johnson were then ordered to disable all the emergency brakes in all the train cars. However, the train is stopped at Harris Mill Junction before they make it to Rockdale, and the police and FBI try to arrest Devereau and his men. After Devereau hijacks the train, Whiney tries to get on board, but he is shot by a federal agent and kicked off the train by Devereau before dying on the ground.
