Edgardo Magallanes is the main antagonist-turned-supporting deuteragonist of the Filipino 2023 TV Series Black Rider.
He is the leader of drug dealing syndicate group known as Golden Scorpion, who was believed to be the biological father of Calvin Magallanes, but actually the son of his rival Antonio Rodriguez. He is also the biological son of Elias Guerrero from Alma who turns out to be his archenemy.
He is portrayed by Raymond Bagatsing. who also portrayed Lucio Santanar in FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano. In his younger years, he is portrayed by Yasser Marta.
Personality[]
He is shown to be no nonsense and opportunistic individual as seen that he is determined to pursue his business enabling himself to earn a huge amount of moneys. His obsession of money and power, gives him an elitist, abusive, obsessive, and power tripping mindset, where he thinks that money is everything to him and he can buy everything to obtain his freedom.
As a father, he is also shown to have a disciplinarian mindset, with the use of his wrath, as seen multiple times, when he learns that his Calvin have created another reckless action, by beating and tormenting him. This action indicates that he is extremely careful for his action and prevents his plan to be risked by Calvin’s recklessness. However, despite of his abusive approach, it is still that he has good fatherly instincts, as seen when other members of Golden Scorpion insults him due to his failures and protects him by their words.
At some point, he was nearly redeemed for his crimes by trying to escape his life of crime and choose to live peacefully. However, not for long, he wasn’t able to sustain the life he has chosen, presumably due to his temptation of wealth and power.
Background[]
Past[]
At some point, he entered into life of crime but tried to briefly escape the syndicate and stayed in the islands of Cebu to have his peace. While lying low in a small town of Alegria, Cebu, he meets Alma in a small restaurant where the latter works. He then formed a relationship with Alma for a short time. However, he wasn’t able to sustain his life leaving his lover Alma by staging his own death. Unbeknownst to him that he impregnated Alma having their son Elias, who’ll be soon his future archenemy as the Black Rider. As he left Alma in Cebu, he then formed a criminal syndicate group known as the Golden Scorpion.
Fathering Calvin and continuation of his life of crime[]
As he leaves Alma in Cebu and forms a syndicate group known as Golden Scorpion, he eventually married Hilda and had a son. One day he crossed path with his rival Antonio, the leader of Pulang Diablo killing his wife Rosa. As Antonio extracts his revenge to Edgardo, he crossed path with Hilda leaving her traumatized and killing their son replacing Antonio’s son as his son. Unbeknownst to him that he was raising Antonio’s son who’s soon to be Calvin. Years later he fathered and mentored Calvin to be the next leader of Golden Scorpion, on the other side he abused him due to his recklessness and constant failures.
Crossing paths with Elias[]
One day, Edgardo having an identity of Carlos Legazpi attended into an art exhibit, and an unknown man attempted to assassinate him. As Elias is in the same place delivering, he followed the gunman to stop the gunman killing him. The two resulted into a brawl, and this was ended when Edgardo’s men shot the gunman to death. He then introduced himself to Elias and thanks him for saving his life. As Elias leaves the place with Alma, Edgardo then sees Alma once again. Upon seeing his ex-lover Alma with Elias, he had suspicions that Elias might be his abandoned son. Realizing that the rumor of Elias being Edgardo's actual son is actually true, and that Calvin (his other son) and the other Golden Scoprion members have ruined Elias' life by killing both his wife and his two children, Edgardo breaks down feeling instant regret for his actions.
His Conflicts with Calvin and Elias[]
Now that he knows that Elias is his real and lost son, he decides to try to get to know Elias better by giving him at the Biyahero awarding ceremony, and he even did a bit of shooting practice to see how well Elias is at shooting. but at the same time, day by day, Edgardo's also starting to lose his love for Calvin, as he knows that he'll never change at all from his crazy ways. That made Calvin even more heated under the collar. so he followed Edgardo to find out the truth. and the truth might be that Calvin isn't even Edgardo's son anymore.
Learning that Black Rider and Elias his lost son is one man after Calvin abducted Alma Guerrero, he spares Black Rider despite his enemy causing the fights of his son ceased. Initially he decided to spare Elias and persuades him to join his forces but Elias refused as he continues his principles until he witnessed his sons duel resulting to Calvin’s death and misbelieving that Elias was responsible for killing Hilda, as Antonio’s plot for vengeance.
He has once again faced Black Rider in Isla Alakdan resulting into a violent shootout and later a knife combat as they were able to corner each other. Attempting to attack Elias with his knife, he was slashed by Elias in his stomach causing him to retreat with his remaining men. Severely injured and slowly dying, he faced Sen. William who tricked him by beating him seriously. Authorities later arrested him and confirmed that he is still alive.
Imprisonment[]
He was later imprisoned for his crimes and he was confronted by the President of the Philippines for his atrocities in the country. He was also faced by Alma confronting him for his sins to his first family and blaming Elias for Hilda’s death causing him to have doubt that Elias might not be the one responsible for killing Hilda as he knew that Alma was always honest. Completely powerless, he struggles and grieves in jail continuing to hatch vengeance to Sen. William and Elias.
Return of Golden Scorpion and Redemption[]
When the remaining members of the Golden Scorpion attacked the prison facility, he managed to escape the prison facility by inflicting a riot in the cell and his henchmen killed almost of the policemen guarding the area. Upon returning and lie lows to one of his hideout he continues his illegal businesses with the Golden Scorpion.
Later on, he learns that Calvin is alive and joined forces with Antonio confirming that he is not his biological son thanks to Matthias, one of Calvin’s friends whom the Golden Scorpion abducted to make him confess about the true identity of Calvin. On the same time, he also confirms that Elias wasn’t responsible for killing his wife Hilda. He then backups Elias with his henchmen as he learns that Antonio and Calvin have been terrorizing the wedding of Paeng and Joan in Mayor Alfonso’s rest house.
He saves Elias from the hands of Calvin and Antonio, then later became a volunteer for kidney transplant as a way to revive Elias. With Elias staying in his hands, he trained him and assisted his lost son in his mission to kill Calvin and Antonio. Later on he also learns that Moises is his biological son after Moises joins in the syndicate confirming by his Scorpion necklace.
He was seen aiding Elias on his final duel with Calvin and Alvaro where this part he managed to fire Alvaro’s car after attempting to escape from his hands. Later on after Calvin’s downfall, he was seen celebrating with his sons Elias and Moises and their friends for Elias’ success and finally the latter forms a new family. Days later, Elias has finally accepted him as his father and farewells him after declaring that he is still an outlaw and not yet truly free.
Trivia[]
- He proclaims himself that he is a descendant of Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, who colonized Mactan Islands, and was defeated by Lapulapu. This signifies that they have similarity to be elitist individual, and the villain in Philippine history. Similarly to his archenemy Black Rider (Elias Guerrero), he was proclaimed by that he is one of the remaining descendants of Lapulapu alongside with his mentor, for being brave and skillful in fighting.
- These proclamations may also signify that the two will be crossing paths soon, resulting into a bloody duel.
- His signature weapon is Colt Anaconda, a revolver type pistol.
