Edna is a minor antagonist in the 1995 horror video game I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, based on the 1967 short story of same name by the late Harlan Ellison.
She was Glynis' abusive mother who hated Gorrister with a passion and went all her way to make their marriage fall apart. Her actions made her responsible for Gorrister's self-loathing, something that AM takes delight in exploiting.
She was voiced by Melina Van Houk.
Biography[]
Little is known about Edna's past. What is known is that at some point, she married a man named Harry, with whom she had a daughter named Glynis. At some point, Glynis married Gorrister, but Edna never approved of him, and thus began to sabotage everything around them to ruin their marriage. Most of it involved her emotionally abusing Glynis while Gorrister was out during work, and her fear of her mother prevented her from telling him the truth, thus causing to have tons of fights and arguments. Eventually, it reached a breaking point that caused Glynis to be sent into a psychiatrich hospital, with no chance of getting out of there. To make sure no one would ever find out about what she did, Edna began blaming Gorrister for what happened. Sometime after that, she was killed along with most of humanity when AM launched his strike.
This event caused Gorrister to lose hope for the future except for the day he could finally kill himself. AM took great pleasure in tormenting him with the knowledge of how many years Glynis spent in a padded cell because of him, even providing Gorrister with a torture cell designed to constantly electrocute him, invoking electroshock therapy.
During his scenario in AM's game, Gorrister found Edna hanging inside a truck stop's meat locker, having cut a deal with AM to escape torture in exchange for murdering Gorrister and cutting out his heart. With the help of a talking jackal, the Chinese Supercomputer's avatar in his scenario, Gorrister eventually realized that he was not to blame for his wife's insanity and the truth about what Edna has done. Freed from his despair and self-loathing, Gorrister called her out for all the horrible things she did, before using her as the iron zeppelin's brain electricity supplier; burying Glynis' unliving body outside the truck stop; jumpstarting his heart back to life; and finally destroying his neurosis by blowing up the truck stop with a flare gun before departing aboard the airship, finally bringing Edna to justice and moving on with his life once and for all.
Personality[]
One thing that defines Edna in a nutshell is her misandrism. Aside from hating Gorrister for "taking her daughter away", she was also physically abusive to Harry, which caused him to become an alcoholic to cope with his wife's abuse, thus causing him to neglect his daughter when she needed him and Gorrister the most. It was because of her abuse that Glynis became insane to the point of never leaving a psychiatrich hospital, and she didn't any regret or remorse for doing so, showing how little she cared for her husband and daughter. She is also xenophobic towards any person who isn't Caucasian or white, as she referred to the Jackal as "Chinaman" and is even implied that she is cruel to animals, due to the implications of her avatar being responsible for the caged animals painfully supplying brain electricity to the iron zeppelin during Gorrister's game.
