Edward Avalaché is one of the secondary antagonists in the 2023 anime anime fantasy movie Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. He was a priest that became the 20th Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom before his status got invoked, due to the scheming of the royals and nobility, who opposed his goal of eliminating the boundaries between the three realms. In response, he would rebel and attempt to overthrow those in power, but would meet his end in the process.

He was eventually revived by Conrad Leto, along with Princia Funnybunny and Jester Garandros, and together, he would aid them in Conrad's goal of creating a world where everyone can live in joy and equality.
He is voiced by Hochu Otsuka in Japanese, and by Steve Blum in English.
Appearance[]
Edward is an elderly man with white hair that are parted on the back, leaving one that has sky blue gradient-colored that’s facing on the right. He also has white mustache, a beard and numerous lining around his face due to his age. He wore a attire that consisted of a long white furs on a blue cape covering his shoulders and the back of his body arriving down at his ankles with. Under he wore a sky blue-colored clothes.
Personality[]
Edward is a stoic, sophisticated elder, who tends to carry an impassive expression. Much like the other Wizard Kings, he desires to create a better world for everyone where no one will have to suffer. Thus, he supports Conrad's goal and tends to see it through.
Despite this, however, he does show a compassionate side for his people, even when he finds himself in conflict with them. This is most noticeable when battling with the Black Bull, where he offered to spare their lives after seeing that they are noble individuals that are of pure heart. Upon meeting his defeat against Noelle Silva, he was very pleased to learn that, in spite of her noble lineage, she is a good hearted individual that can empathizes with others, believing that people like her would make his ideal world come true.

It was said that Edward was a promising man with a future and a career as a Magic Knight, though he didn't take an interest since he was focused on spending his time in churches in the Common Realm and Forsaken Realm. He ultimately became a priest himself when learning of the extremely harsh conditions most commoners without magic suffer from, even starting an orphanage where he took in many orphaned children and took care of them are if he were their father. Ten years later, the children in his orphanage fell victim to a Diamond Kingdom raid while they were at war with the Clover Kingdom, as a result, he uses his magic for the first time to obliterate the ones responsible for his children's deaths and joined the Magic Knights to prevent more tragedies like what he experienced from ever happening again.
He eventually became the Wizard King at that time, however, most royals and nobles strongly went against this due to Edward's ambition for equality to all royal, common, and outside the realm. At some point, they schemed the downfall of Edward, revoking him of his status as the Wizard King and this drove him to an edge where he lost his faith in God. As a result, he formed a resistance group to get revenge on the ones responsible for his downfall, believing eliminating those in power is the only way to reform the corruption within the kingdom. Sadly, this was short-lived when Edward was captured and executed. However, he is then revived by Conrad and joined his cause of creating a better world due to sharing the same mutual beliefs.

- Ice Wedge Magic: Edward possesses incredible ice-elemental magic where he creates various attacks and shields made out of ice. He also possesses the incredibility of creating angel-like ice golems and summoning a whole church made of ice.

- According to Yuki Tabata in the light novel's Q&A, Edward was originally meant to have the exact persona of an "evil old man". However, this was later changed since it was thought that it would make him too old, and was corrected before the final outcome.
