“ | I LOVE THEM! They... They are like my own daughters, I'd rather see them having sex with men then rotting in prison for the rest of their lives! | „ |
~ Judge Edward Kofax to Olivia Benson. |
Judge Edward Kofax is a protagonist turned antagonist in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, being the main antagonist of half of Season 20 and the episode "Brothel".
He was portrayed by John Rothman.
Biography[]
When a young woman jumps off a roof, the NYPD's Special Victims Unit quickly sees that she has been shot through the back and then thrown off a building. They suspect that she was running from someone or something and when they go into the building, they find out that she had been forced to be a prostitute at a brothel. When looking at the victim's records they found out that she was a drug addict and her trial for rehab was directed by Judge Kofax, in whose court they had all testified several times.
When asked about the victim, Kofax says that she was prone to violence, always hitting her brother and parents. He said that she wasn't in rehab for long because of how fast she got off the drugs. When informed about the murder he was shocked and gave permission to the SVU team to search threw court records. The team then finds out that a lot of girls with the same problem as the victim, drug and domestic abuse where sent to rehab and all the trials where directed by Kofax.
Detective Amanda Rollins goes undercover looking for a job, but Kofax pulls up as they do so. He thought that the agent was a booker and was looking for a place to stay, like the plan intended it to be. When arrested and taken for interrogation he said that he thought she was a hooker and wanted to make a case himself. They knew he was lying because he is a trial judge and not a state one.
They eventually broke through to him and he said that they were drug addicts and that their lives where already broken. He says that he recruited them because he would rather see them having sex with random men than going to rehab or prison. He says he cared for them like daughters - much like his own daughter, Delia, who had died of a drug overdose some years before. Kofax admits that he feels responsible for her death, and does not want the girls' parents to go through what he did.
In court, the new judge sentences him to 25 years in prison after he made a deal.
Trivia[]
- Kofax is inspired by state judge Tim Nolan, similarly responsible for sex trafficking.
