Ego the Living Planet is the main antagonist of the What If...? episode, "What if... Peter Quill Attacked Earth's Mightiest Heroes?" He is an alternate version of Ego the Living Planet who successfully had Peter Quill delivered to him. After this, he used Peter Quill to power the expansion and destroy hundreds of worlds.

He was voiced by Kurt Russell, who also voiced the main universe and T'Challa Star-Lord versions of Ego, as well as playing Stuntman Mike in Death Proof.

Biography[]

Presumably, Ego began his life as a large Celestial brain floating in space like his MCU counterpart. Over several eons, Ego manipulated the matter around him to form both a small planet to house his brain and a humanoid avatar to interact with other lifeforms. Feeling lonely, Ego set out to find other lifeforms, only to find them underwhelming. Believing that he was the only being worthy of living, Ego started planting seeds on other plants, which would expand and wipe out the civilizations on them, a process Ego dubbed the Expansion. Realizing that he didn't have the power to do this on his own, he started impregnating various lifeforms, hoping he would create offspring that would inherit his Celestial Genes. None of them did, so Ego killed them all and hid their remains in a cave.

In 1978, Ego would meet a human named Meredith Quill, and the couple produced a child named Peter. Fearing that Meredith would distract him from his mission, he killed her and sent a Ravager named Yondu to bring Peter to him. Unlike in the main timeline, Yondu followed up on his promise. Ego explained his origins to Peter and informed him about the Expansion.

Peter did not want to want to take part in the expansion, so Ego forcibly took control of him and had him travel to various planets, activating their seeds. At one point, Ego destroyed Asgard, which caused its prince, Thor Odinson, to vow revenge against the Celestial. Wanting to regain control, Peter travelled to Earth, hoping to reconnect with his roots. Unfortunately, Ego retained his control over Peter, and tried to get him to destroy Earth. When Peter didn't report back to him, Ego travelled so Earth and fought the Avengers over his seed. Ego was warded of by Peter, who absorbed some of the Celestial's energy. The episode ends with the Avengers discussing their plan to travel to Ego's planet and kill him.

Personality[]

Fitting with his name, Ego's personality is primarily dictated by his egotism. He views himself as the only being in the universe deserving of life. Because of this, he seeks to expand himself until everything, as he quotes, "is a part of [him]." Despite being Peter's father, Ego does not care about him and only sees him as a pawn to further his plans. However, Ego is willing to manipulate those around him, as he masks his evil nature with a caring and benevolent personality.

Like the original, Ego once loved Meredith Quill at first, showing he was capable of affection but feared it would be a hindrance to his plans. Eventually, this Ego still quickly got rid of his love for Meredith entirely but instead of justifying it while looking sentimental about it, this Ego coldly admits to causing her death right to Peter without a hint of remorse.

Appearance[]

Ego has mostly the same appearance as his main timeline counterpart. He dawns a tan robe with black accents on the sides. Over his robe, he has a long, brown cape that covers his shoulders and upper torso. However, Ego has much younger facial features than his counterpart, as to appear like he actually could be the young Peter's father.
