The Sentient was a deformed creature, twisted and massive, sent from some dark fold of distant space, a warped thing wounded by daylight. By night it was a terror, felling Tower after Tower. Citadel after Citadel. By day it hid, blinded and pained.
~ The Eidolon Sentient as described in the legends of Cetus.

The Eidolon Sentient is a minor antagonist in the MMO third-person shooter Warframe.

It was a colossal Sentient that terrorized the town of Cetus on Earth during the Old War in an attempt to gain access to the Orokin Tower guarding the town. While the Eidolon Sentient is long dead in the present day, its mindless fragments still walk the plains outside Cetus at night, trying in vain to regain the unity they once had.

Personality[]

As the Eidolon Sentient is long dead by the time the game takes place, little is known about its personality. Given that it kept trying to destroy everything the Orokin created despite the fact that the war was already over suggests it was incredibly spiteful and harbored the same hatred for the Orokin as the rest of its kind. Despite its thirst for destruction however, the Eidolon Sentient was also smart enough to know its own limitations and be cautious when attacking a foe it cannot destroy immediately.

Biography[]

The Old War[]

During the last days of the Old War, the Orokin Empire had already been betrayed and slaughtered by their Tenno soldiers, one of the few remaining active Sentients in the Origin System ravaged across the surface of Earth, the heart of the empire, in a final act of spite against the mortal enemies of its kind. The grandiose Orokin Towers fell one after the other to its might with the Tenno no longer a threat after their disappearance, until it came upon the tower of the Unum. An artificial mind much like its own, the Unum's will guarded the tower and the village of Cetus that had settled at its gates along with a lone Tenno named Gara, who refused to leave the Unum unguarded.

Despite its best efforts, the Sentient was unable to breach the Unum's defenses. Every night it would assault the village and the tower to destroy it, but retreat by day as the light of the sun was painful to it. Gara spent every day trying to find it and strike while it's vulnerable, but was unable to find its hiding place. While the Sentient's attacks were vicious, it was just as cautious. Every Sentient that travels to the Origin System is left barren, unable to reproduce, meaning that every loss it suffered was gone for good. It was confused as to why it couldn't destroy this Orokin Tower when it had felled countless others. Something was special about it.

Gara wanted to venture beyond the Unum's shields and assault the creature directly while it attacked, but the Unum forbade her from doing so. It was not possible to destroy the Sentient at night, when it's at the height of its power. Knowing that a different strategy was needed, the Unum had its followers give some of the Kuva within its tower to the wildlife around Cetus, a crimson liquid that the Orokin used to transfer their minds into other bodies. The Kuva connected the animals to the Unum and roamed the area to aid in the search for the Sentient's hideout. They found it, but the Sentient felt something was off and captured some of the animals.

When the Sentient tasted the Kuva inside the animals it felt an odd sensation, one of healing. It felt more complete. The Sentient instantly realized the ramifications of its discovery. With enough Kuva it could regain its ability to reproduce and secure the future of its species. It was this point where all caution flew aside, no more retreating. The Sentient changed its priorities, too much was at stake. It would no longer destroy the tower but become one with it, replace the Unum as its guiding will.

Again the Sentient attacked with unprecedented ferocity. The Unum could not allow it to retreat again, so it used all of its willpower to trap it at its doorstep. When Gara left its side to finish the Sentient, it recoiled when it noticed one of its kind's mortal enemies and turned its full attention on her. Its power was far beyond Gara's ability to fight, but the Sentient hadn't noticed that the Unum had given her a strange device. When the Sentient drew her close to finish her off Gara activated the device at the last possible moment. A massive explosion consumed Gara and shattered the Sentient's core, finally freeing the villagers and the Unum from the nightmare.

Present Day[]

When Gara's sacrifice destroyed the Sentient, its colossal body broke apart and scattered across the region. The mind is gone forever, but its fragments still held some life within them. By day they are as lifeless and broken as the rest, but the darkness of the night still strengthens its body and allows some of its pieces to roam what became known as the Plains of Eidolon. Most shards are small and weak, but a few tower over the trees, the monsters the villagers call the Eidolons. Some Eidolons are so large and hold so much energy, they change the weather around them. When the Grineer came to conquer the plains in the name of their queens, even they quickly realized that leaving their outposts at night is suicide.

The Unum keeps the monsters trapped within the Plains of Eidolon to ensure they can no longer cause any harm to the innocent. The Sentient may be dead, but its fragments endless yearning for regaining their lost unity mean that they will forever be connected to the Unum and the people of Cetus.

Trivia[]

  • The Eidolon Sentient's largest fragment, the Eidolon Hydrolyst, is the tallest boss in the game, towering even over the similarly massive Corpus Orb Mothers and the Jordas Golem.
  • In Greek mythology, an eidolon (meaning "apparition, ghost, image or double") was believed to be a spectral image of a person, commonly deceased though eidola of living people were also described. This reflects the undead, otherworldy nature of the Eidolon Sentient's fragments that haunt the plains.
