Do you remember when you were afraid of the dark... the possibility that some horrible creature may be hiding in your closet or under your bed? People call him the Boogeyman, but in Mexico, he's known as "El Cucuy". Some say he's a shadow, an evil spirit that changes form to become whatever you fear. Some say he's a hideous monster that lives in the caves. But it's all just a myth, right? Or is it?
~ The official description for "El Cucuy: The Bogeyman".

El Cucuy, also known as The Boogeyman, is the titular main antagonist of the horror attraction "El Cucuy: The Boogeyman" at the 2013 Halloween Horror Nights. He is a dark, shapeshifting spirit that violently kidnaps and devours children.

He was narrated by Danny Trejo, who also played Johnny 23 in Con Air, El Jefe in xXx, Ox in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Bane in Young Justice, Newtralizer in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012), El Diablo in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Santa in American Horror Stories and Stronghold in Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Biography[]

El Cucuy is the boogeyman of legend. For decades, parents have used his story to scare naughty children into behaving. Most of his legend is true: he lives in a cave at the top of a mountain, and will come down to go on murder sprees, kidnap children, and eat them.

However, despite the legend saying that he targets naughty children, the first thing guests come across is a movie theater filled with mutilated corpses of adults, with El Cucuy leaving through the back and ready to kill again. Guests then pass dozens of missing person posters for children, and then come across a birthday party gone horribly wrong, as the house and surrounding yard is covered in the corpses of both children and adults, violently hacked apart, torn open, or beaten to death. El Cucuy still lurks there, armed with his axe, and attacks the guests as they attempt to flee the scene.

El Cucuy then makes his way to a child's bedroom, hiding under the bed. He shapeshifts to resemble the child's grandmother, then violently kills the child for being up past bedtime.

Guests follow the sound of children screaming up to El Cucuy's cave, which he has decorated with jack-o-lanterns, stolen toys, and what appear to be the skeletal remains of babies. Upon entering his domain, guests find shelves upon shelves of toys he has stolen, and eventually come across crying children in cages. El Cucuy has magically replaced their heads with jack-o-lanterns so that, to quote the official source, "for keeping as still living decorations while he eats their bodies". After passing the cages, guests come across dozens of bloody bags suspended from the ceiling, with the sounds of crying coming from inside; the kidnapped children, yet to be released from the bags he took them away in. As El Cucuy chases after the guests, he shows off a still-living child with their stomach ripped out and put on a plate, fork and knife ready. All the while, he sarcastically and sadistically repeats the warnings that the children's parents had given them about misbehaving, laughing at their pain.

After coming across even more corpses, including an adult one that has been hidden in a sewer pipe, El Cucuy finally catches up with the guests and attacks them. The attraction ends, implying that El Cucuy has killed the guests.

Personality[]

El Cucuy is sadistic and vile, and openly delights in causing pain and suffering to anyone. He kills and tortures for fun, and eats children not necessarily out of survival, but just to spread misery and cause torment. He is a trickster, shapeshifting to either fool his victims or torment them with what they fear, laughing and mocking all the while.
