El Sombrerón is the main antagonist of the Lotería short story "The Mandolin".
Biography[]
El Sombrerón is a goblin who longs for a woman to make his own, finding any woman he becimes smitten with, tying his mules outside her house, and continuing to serenade her for as long as he wants her. As far back as the 1940s, at an unspecified city with a college, El Sombrerón would try to play his mandolin to serenade women with long hair he would find, and when they refused him, he forced them on his lap, braided their hair, and continued to serenade them while holding them against their will. When they were hungry, he'd offer them plates of dirt, which they declined. The women usually escaped when he was asleep. H wore long dark clothes and a large sombrero hat to cover his face. In more recent years, El Sombrerón appeared and harassed at least four women in such a way when they cut through a specific stretch of woods, though instead of mules, he had dogs with braided tails. Alerts were released publicly for the public to protect themselves, and salons saw a spike in business from long haired women wanting their hair cut.
