Elam (also known as the One-armed gunslinger) is a minor antagonist in Sergio Leone's 1966 Spaghetti Western The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
He is portrayed by the late Al Mulock.
History[]
He was a bounty hunter who, along with his companions, attempted to kill Tuco Ramirez to claim his bounty. Tuco killed Elam's friends and permanently crippled Elam's right arm, before escaping. Elam was left to practice aiming with his left arm before searching for Tuco, bent on revenge.
Eight months after losing his right arm, Elam finally tracked Tuco to a small town in New Mexico. He aimed his gun at the seemingly defenseless Tuco (who was bathing at the time), monologuing about his struggles and desire for revenge. An awkward silence fell as Tuco simply stared at Elam in confusion before fanning his revolver (which was hidden in the bathwater) at him. He rose from the bath, watching him as he struggled to compose himself, before finishing him off. Tuco then quipped "When you have to shoot, shoot, don't talk."
