“ | My comrades! We'll overthrow Marley and restore the pride of Eldia! | „ |
~ Grisha Yeager cheering on the Restorationists. |
The Eldian Restorationists are supporting characters in the anime/manga series Attack on Titan. They are a rebel group of radical Eldians living inside the Liberio internment zone in Marley who swore to restore Eldia from decades of pain and submission to Marleyan rule.
As a radical organization aiming for the complete destruction of Marley, the Restorationists were accused guilty of various crimes, including conspiracy and propaganda, even though they fought for their freedom against another evil and are indirectly responsible for the main characters’ survival.
Description[]
“ | I believe in our founder Ymir! We're the chosen children of God! The Subjects of Ymir! | „ |
~ Grisha affirming his faith in Ymir Fritz. |
The Eldian Restorationists are a group of radical, rebellious Eldians from the Liberio internment zone within the Marleyan city of Liberio in the continental mainland. Growing tired of being oppressed by Marley and the rest of humanity, they conspired to overthrow the nations government and free the Eldians from their longtime subjection, even planning to recreate the former Eldian Empire.
To become part of the organization, its members have to swear an oath of loyalty by carving a cross-shaped scar on their own body, which was the symbol of the Restorationists.
The group was remotely led by a secret informer nicknamed “the Owl”. The Owl’s real name was Eren Kruger, an Eldian who infiltrated Marley’s Public Security by faking his blood tests with the help of a doctor to pass for a Marleyan. As a child, Kruger witnessed his father and other family members being burnt alive by the Public Security Authorities, who were all part of an Eldian revolutionary army plotting against Marley. The same fate happened to all the other members of the revolution and their respective families. This experience prompted him to seek revenge against Marley and plan to form a new group of Restorationists one day. During his service as a member of Public Security, Kruger inherited the Attack Titan from an unknown holder. During his final years as one of the Nine Titans, Kruger was seconded by Grisha Yeager, who coordinated the Restorationists’ actions and organized their secret meetings, acting as a sort of spokesman.
During said meetings, which took place in a basement where the Restorationists all gathered, they made plans to take the Founding Titan from the King of Paradis Island and use it to control all the other eight Titan powers and destroy Marley. They also discussed what they believed to be the real deeds of the great ancestor Ymir Fritz and of the former Eldian Empire, only interpreting it as beneficial to the world, as they denied the worst atrocities committed by their ancestors and only acknowledged that Ymir used the Power of Titans to build roads and bridges and to cultivate lands.
History[]
The Eldian Restorationists were formed by Eren Kruger based on a similar group created several years before. When Kruger was a child, his father was part of an Eldian revolutionary army organized by remaining members of the royal family living on the Marleyan continent. Like the Restorationists, they plotted against Marley during secret meetings. However, one day, they were found by Marley’s Public Security Authorities and were all executed by being burnt alive, along with all their families, including Kruger’s father and his family in their home. Kruger, who had witnessed his family's massacre from a closet where he was hiding, swore to get revenge on Marley and to achieve Eldia’s restoration, eventually forming the Eldian Restorationists and leading them from the shadows under the nickname “the Owl”.
After the brutal murder of Faye Yeager at the hands of the Public Security in the year 817, the Owl obtained the information that she was mauled to death by officer Gross’s sons’ dogs (probably by Gross himself) and spread it among the Restorationists. During a medical inspection, Faye’s brother, doctor Grisha Yeager, discovered a strange cross-shaped scar on the body of his patient. The latter, a Restorationist named Grice, told him about the organization as well as the circumstances of his sister’s death. Having learned the truth, Grisha decided to join the Restorationists to avenge Faye and all the Eldians who suffered because of the world.
Grisha soon became an important member of the Restorationists. During their secret meetings, he interpreted ancient Eldian documents and, even though he couldn’t understand the language, he was adamant about the great achievements of Ymir for humankind, believing her to have used her godly powers to help the entire world prosper. Under this pretext, he advocated the destruction of Marley and the restoration of the Eldian Empire. Sometimes, Grisha would also acknowledge Eldia's destructive conquest, but simply claimed his ancestors were right, seeing the rest of humanity as lesser and corrupt. Grisha swore that in order to "correct the world again", Eldia would have needed to be restored.
One day, the Owl sent the Restorationists a woman named Dina Fritz who was a direct descendant of the Eldian royal family and who agreed to reveal some intel to them. Dina and Grisha quickly fell in love, married, and the next year had a child named Zeke. When the Marleyan government launched their program to train the next batch of child Warriors, the Restorationists learned from the Owl that a planned incoming campaign was an operation to send the Warriors to Paradis Island's Walls to retrieve the Founding Titan, for military purposes and a need to deprive Eldia's remnants of their weapon.
Grisha, his wife, and his comrades planned for Zeke to seize the opportunity of obtaining that power to destroy Marley. Grisha enlisted his son into the military and put him in the Warrior program. However, Zeke, fed up with his parents’ abuse and fearing for his own life, decided to denounce them to the Marleyan authorities. All the Restorationists were soon arrested and tortured by the Public Security Authorities in an unsuccessful attempt to have them reveal the Owl’s identity. They were then exiled and shipped to Paradis Island.
On Paradis Island's borders, all the Restorationists were turned into Pure Titans, except for Grice and Grisha, the former being used as bait to lure the Titans away from the border, and the latter who was kept alive longer by the man guarding him (Eren Kruger, the Owl). When Sergeant Major Gross tried to pull him over the edge of the wall they were standing on so that he could fight the Peering Titan, Kruger pushed Gross instead and he was eaten by the Titan. As Gross was being eaten, Kruger revealed his secret identity as the Owl and transformed into the Attack Titan while killing the rest of the PS soldiers present at the docking place. After killing all the Marleyans at the port, Kruger exited his Titan form and told Grisha information about the nature of the Power of the Titans. Despite initial resistance from Grisha, Kruger convinced him to continue his mission and entrusted him with the mission to steal the Founding Titan from the King of the Walls. Kruger was at the end of his thirteen year term as the Attack Titan, and after the conversation and Grisha agreeing to the task, was turned into a Pure Titan by Kruger and ate him, obtaining the power of the Attack Titan. With this final act, the Eldian Restorationists were fully disbanded.
