“ | Sigurd. I'm sorry, but I grow weary of these excuses. We stand now as two knights on the battlefield, sword to an honorable duel. Draw, Sigurd! So long as I wield the demon blade, Mystletainn, I won't be the one to fall this day! | „ |
~ Eldigan's battle quote to Sigurd. |
Eldigan, also known as the Lionheart, is a supporting antagonist from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War.
He is the commander of the Cross Knights and the lord of Agustria's House Nordion during the First Generation, being Chagall's top enforcer and Lachesis' elder half-brother. As a descendant of Crusader Hezul, he wields the powerful "Demon Sword" Mystletainn.
He is also the husband of Grahnye and the father of Ares, both of whom move to Leonster to stay with her parents before Agustria enters a war against Grannvale.
He is voiced by Junji Majima in Japanese version, and by Greg Chun in English version.
Biography[]
Eldigan was the older half-brother of Lachesis, and a close friend to Sigurd and Quan, both of whom he first met at Belhalla's military academy. Like his ancestors, Eldigan inherited Hezul's Holy Blood through Hezul's daughter and was extremely loyal to the Agustrian royal family, and once served King Imuka who served as Eldigan's mentor and friend.
However, Imuka was assassinated by his corrupt son Chagall under Manfroy's manipulation, which started a tyranny within Agustria. People in Agustria was fed up with Chagall's corrupt rule that contradicted his well-revered father's rule and condemned his patricide, wishing that Eldigan was the next king instead. Nevertheless, Eldigan refused to become the next king in order to fulfill his duty to serve Chagall, the last known descendant of Hezul.
After the war between Agustria and Grannevale broke, Eldigan was forced to fight his former friend Sigurd and rescued the defeated Chagall from the battlefield. In spite of Sigurd's pledge, Eldigan refused to betray Chagall, feeling Agustria would be doomed if the last heir of Hezul was killed. Then, he struck a deal and made peace with Sigurd, allowing Sigurd's army to settle everything and leave the land in a year.
During the next six months, Eldigan resides in Madino Castle with Chagall, while he leaves the Cross Knights at Silvail, prepared to take out Sigurd if he breaks their agreement. However, after six months of hiding, Chagall broke the peace treaty himself by striking against the army of Grannvale, but was defeated again in the process, forcing Eldigan to led the Cross Knights and fight against Sigurd's army once more.
Eldigan confronted Sigurd on the battlefield, only to find his own sister Lachesis was also on Sigurd's side. Lachesis begged her brother to ceasefire and persuade Chagall into yielding, so that there won't be senseless bloodshed. Moved by Lachesis, Eldigan agreed to persuade Chagall to retreat before he gave her his prized Earth Sword as a memento.
Later, Eldigan returned back to Chagall's side and tried to persuade his lord to yield as it was too dangerous for Chagall to fight against Sigurd's forces, but Chagall refused to listen and delusionaly believed Eldigan had betrayed him. Hence, Chagall demanded Eldigan to be executed. Eldigan eventually realized how corrupt and irredeemable Chagall was, before lamenting the doom of Agustria and thinking of Lachesis in his final moments.
