Eli Rooney is an "alleged" child molester and a minor antagonist in the 2011 video game L.A. Noire.
He was voiced by Courtney Gains.
Biography[]
The player first encounters him during the case "The Golden Butterfly", when they are interviewing the school janitor. The Janitor tells them that they are the school has recently been having problems with a child molester who hangs around the school field and tries to befriend the children. He then spots the child molester hanging around in the distance and tells the detectives that "that's him over there!".
Cole Phelps chases the fleeing Eli Rooney on foot, and captures him. While talking to Cole and his partner, Rusty, Rooney does not hide his overt attraction to children. When asked if he knows about the abduction and murder of a woman they're investigating he states that "[he] likes them younger then that", prompting Rusty to threaten to "smash [his] f---ing skull in" unless he turns out his pockets; he gets arrested as a suspect in the murder after the victim's golden butterfly broach was found on him in the turn-over.
Cole interrogates Eli at the police station, who has undergone beatings from station staff for being a "kiddy raper". During the interrogation, Eli continues to act overt about his attraction to children and his abduction and molestation of them. When asked by Cole why he "punishes children", Eli responds by implying that he was punished himself as a child. Cole tells him that he must know what he does is evil, to which Eli states, "no one's perfect". When Cole asks him whether he has ever tied up any of his victims, he tells Cole that "[victims] isn't a nice thing to call them", and that he has learned not to talk about the kinds of things he likes as it "just tends to get people riled up"
The player, as Cole Phelps, ultimately has the choice between charging Eli or another suspect with the murder; if Cole charges the other suspect over Eli he will be severely reprimanded for not taking the opportunity to throw a "kiddy raper" in jail, no matter the truth behind the case. As is revealed in later cases, neither Eli nor the other suspect were actually guilty, with the victim's death having been at the hands of a serial killer. As a result, Eli is released from custody.
