Hello, Jon. Apologies for the deception, but I wanted to make sure you started reading, so I thought it best not to announce myself.
~ Elias Bouchard

Elias Bouchard, also known as Jonah Magnus, or less known as James Wright and Richard Mendelson, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside the Web) of the Rusty Quill horror podcast The Magnus Archives. He was the head of The Magnus Institute, a research institute based in London that researches the paranormal and has held the position since 1996.

Elias Bouchard is voiced by Ben Meredith.

Appearance[]

Elias is described by Rosie, as too young to have such a high position in the institute, she also notes that he had an old fashioned haircut and cold grey eyes that gave the implication they were so much older than he was.

Biography[]

Elias is the main antagonist throughout the series, although sitting in the back seat until the final season, season 5, during which he presents himself as a skeptic, denying any claims Jonathan Sims makes about Jane Prentiss during the first season. It is later revealed that Elias is an avatar of the Eye and has gained powers through his servitude to the Fear Entity, which included binding the Institute's employees to the Institute unless they remove their eyes or die.

Elias is ultimately loyal to the Beholding and despite helping Jon grow into the role of the Archivist, goes to extreme measures to keep him in the dark as much as possible. He killed Gertrude Robinson, previous archivist, and Jurgen Leitner, famously known for his artefact library, as they were both threats to the Institute and his plans for Jon respectively.

Pre-Jonah Elias[]

Before joining the Institute, Elias had a run in with a Leitner, also known as a fear artefact manifested as a book, which caused the death of his friend Allan Schrieber. In 1991, Elias received a letter from the Magnus Institute for a job interview despite him not having sent out a resume. It is then that he first met Jonah, disguised as James Wright at the time who at first asked him what he's most afraid of, then asking why he chose to "heed the call" in which Elias responded that he knew that this is somehow where he should be, prompting James to give him the job.

Post-Jonah Elias[]

Jonah has been body-hopping to stay alive and continue to feed the Eye with the Institute since its founding, and by 1996 he possessed the body of Elias, who then moved from working in the Artefact Storage in 1991, to the head of the Institute soon after. The fast climb to the top made the old archivist, Gertrude, become suspicious of his promotion but didn't act on it until a decade later where she planned to burn the Institute and destroy the body of Jonah Magnus. She was killed by Elias moments before she could set everything on fire with a bullet to the chest.

Soon after Jonathan Sims was appointed Head Archivist and was kept in the dark for the better part of two seasons to attempt to help develop his powers and initiate The Mass Ritual as The Archivist by slowly giving him information and letting him recklessly follow his own conclusions and leads so he can be 'marked' by the other Entities. The appearance of Jurgen Leitner in MAG 80 nearly putting an end to his plans, so when Jon stepped out to smoke a cigarette after getting his statement, Elias took the opportunity to enter Jon's office and beat him to death with the metal pipe Jon was carrying for protection, forcing Jon to go into hiding as he was suspected for the murder.

Whilst hiding in former university friend Georgie Barker's house. Elias would periodically send him statements anonymously, mainly focusing on how to stop The Unknowing, the ritual of a Fear Entity called The Stranger. He hoped that by slowly exposing Jon to Smirke's Fourteen, he would start develop his powers and survive The Unknowing.

After being questioned by Jon, Daisy, and Basira about Gertrude and Leitner's deaths, Elias confessed to the murders, stating that it was to protect the Institute. He also threatened to tell the police about Daisy's past murders, who is an Avatar of The Hunt, if they decide to kill him which would also compromise Basira. Instead, he had Basira sign a contract binding her to the Institute, then explained that since they were all tied to the Institute should he or the Institute be destroyed, it would also kill them all with it.

After stopping The Unknowing, Jon is placed in an impossible coma where everything but his brain ceased to function. Elias visit him in the hospital, praising him on his progress to becoming the Archivist. He is promptly asserted when Martin brings an officer and spends 37 episodes in prison, occasionally being visited by Basira until his escape in MAG 158. He meets with Peter Lukas and Martin in the tunnels, revealing that Jonah has been using Elias's body as a vessel and that his true body sits in the Panopticon.
