Elizabeth Gadge is the titular protagonist of the Inside No. 9 episode "The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge". She is a 17th Century widow who is accused of being a witch and is put on trial during the witch trials in order to determine if she is guilty or not.

She is played by Ruth Sheen.

Biography[]

Seventy-year-old Elizabeth Gadge is a resident in the village of Little Happens, in which she is accused of being a witch. This came about following accusations by her daughter Sarah and son-in-law Thomas Nutter who claim that they witnessed her sucking off a big furry creature. The magistrate Sir Andrew Pike summons two witch-finders, Mr. Warren and Mr. Clarke, in order to help out in the trial and determine if she is guilty. Pike and Warren believe that she is already guilty, although Clarke is far more skeptical.

During the trial, her daughter and son-in-law testify about her supposed meetings with the furry creature, as well as her apparent friendship with a white mouse she calls Snowflake, which they believe is a demon. Elizabeth defends herself, claiming that they are only saying these things in order to get her out of the way so they can have her house. When others in the courtroom laugh at her responses, Warren makes threats towards them that the next person to laugh will be immediately executed as a witch. Instead, they opt to do the trial in private and dismiss the villagers from the courtroom as it can proceed.

Warren begins to penetrate Elizabeth's body with a needle in order to find the "Devil's Mark", which causes her daughter to have a change of heart and jump at her mother's defense. Elizabeth claims that she has prostituted herself to a villager named Two-Shoes, who himself wears a fur coat, something which he strongly denies. The court is adjourned, and Elizabeth continues to be tortured overnight.

When the trial later resumes, Warren decides to prove that she is a witch by getting Snowflake to go to his master. He sprinkles a breadcrumb trail towards Elizabeth, which causes the mouse to go towards her and "prove" that she is guilty. He declares that she will be burned to the stake.

Clarke is still not convinced and feels that Warren is just full of hatred. While Elizabeth awaits her execution, Clarke ties up and gags Warren and puts a bag over his head, so he will instead be killed in her place as punishment for his behavior. After a helpless Warren is taken away, Clarke gets Elizabeth to come out of hiding and gives her his payment so she can leave the village and start a new life. Elizabeth thanks Clarke for sparing her, before then snapping his neck, revealing that she is indeed a witch. Whilst Warren is being burned outside, she informs Snowflake that she will be going to see her master, before then transforming into a raven and flying off into the night.
