~ Elsa's famous quote. |
Elsa is the secondary antagonist of the 2022 horror/black comedy film The Menu. She’s Chef Julian Slowik's right-hand woman, who does everything Chef Slowik asks her to do and explains what's happening in Hawthorn.
She was portrayed by Hong Chau, who also portrayed Opal Koboi in Artemis Fowl.
Biography[]
Not much is known about her past, save for the fact that Elsa has been working for Chef Slowik at Hawthorn.
Elsa first appears when she gives the guests a tour of the private island where Hawthorn is located. She shows the guests where the workers sleep, where they cook the food, and Chef Slowik's house (although they are not allowed to enter, so she merely shows them from afar). Then, Elsa finally brings them to the restaurant where the other workers start preparing the food (not before Elsa informs Slowik about Tyler's girlfriend Margot, much to Slowik's anger).
Elsa then explains the food to the guests. with many find interesting, until later becoming confused due to how some the food have been shown, but Elsa refuses to reveal anything what the restaurant is doing, nor the Chef’s secret recipe. When things become more violent, with her orders from the Chef, Elsa informs the staff to restrain Richard and have his ring finger cut.
After the Chef orders Tyler to kill himself, he appears to be very angry at Elsa and orders her to give Margot the keys to the smokehouse to retrieve a barrel for dessert. Fearing she may be replaced, Elsa checks on Margot in the Chef’s house. Elsa tries to kill her out of jealousy, only for Margot to stab Elsa, killing her instantly much to the latter’s shock.
Elsa is not seen again for the remainder of the film, after the Chef burns down the restaurant - killing the staff, customers and himself. Elsa's corpse was still at the Chef’s house, so it is very likely that she was burned to ashes as the fire spread across the island.
In a deleted scene, Slowik approaches Margot in the smokehouse, where she informs him that Elsa is dead. Slowik somberly remarks that it was "what she wanted" and what he wants as well.
