Villain Overview

Mercury, I will seriously pay you to shut up.
~ Emerald to Mercury.
I don’t care about Salem! But I owe Cinder everything. You want to fight her that bad? Be my guest.
~ Emerald to Ruby before creating an illusion of Cinder.
I think you're wrong, by the way. I highly doubt you're in the same place you started. I-I mean, yeah, you guys have been getting your asses kicked, some of that my fault, but, like, you're at war. You're gonna take hits. …Look, I'm just gonna be super pissed if you all finally decide to give up the moment I switch sides.
~ Emerald to Ruby and her friends, signalling her redemption and turn to heroism.

Emerald Sustrai is a former major antagonist-turned-supporting protagonist in the American web cartoon series RWBY. She was one of Cinder Fall's two right-hands alongside her former partner, Mercury Black. Although still associated in part with Cinder, she is now a member of Ruby Rose's group against both Salem and James Ironwood.

She is voiced by Katie Newville.

Emerald pretends to be affable and kind, striking up conversations and complimenting people while feigning friendship and niceness. However, in reality, she is very wrathful and stern, and despises people who are "so happy all the time". She is easily annoyed, and can be angered by anything from Mercury's antics to her enemies simply existing.

On top of this, Emerald is fiercely loyal to Cinder, claiming that she is the only one worthy of such. She is obsessed with Cinder and is defensive of her to a fault, and gets especially wrathful and violent if someone insults or tries to hurt her, never really realizing that Cinder sees her only as a mere pawn.

After Cinder's presumed death, Emerald sinks into mourning and despair, and feels all purpose has been drained from her life. When Salem reveals that Cinder is still alive, Emerald is upset that she has been cast out and feels lost without her. Despite all of this, Tyrian encourages her to continue serving Salem, telling her that if she does not enjoy the chaos and misery she brings (with or without Cinder), then she does not belong, advice Emerald seemed to take into consideration.

Emerald lived in Mistral city as a thief and presumably an orphan. She would use her Semblance to create illusions to aid her in heists, such as replicas. One day during a jewel heist, Emerald was confronted out the back of the store by Cinder Fall, who offered her a place of belonging in her faction. Though hesitant at first, Emerald agreed, and soon found a mentor figure in Cinder, unaware of Cinder's indifference to her. The two traveled to recruit Marcus Black to their cause, but found him murdered by his son Mercury Black. Seeing Mercury as the clear superior, Cinder offered him the position instead, to which he agreed.

Emerald later joins Cinder in seeking the aid of Adam Taurus and the White Fang, though he, a Faunus, refused to help humans.

The trio then set out to steal the powers of the current Fall Maiden Amber. Emerald created an illusion of a lost little girl as bait, which Amber took. When amber stopped to help the girl, Emerald and Mercury ambushed her and attacked, though they were little match against a Maiden. Cinder enters the battle, and together they are able to overpower and defeat Amber. Cinder then uses her glove to summon a Parasite Grimm and begin stealing Amber's powers. Cinder gets half of them before the process is interrupted by Qrow Branwen, who escapes with a comatose Amber.

Cinder returns to the White Fang and threatens Adam Taurus with her new powers. She has Emerald and Mercury offer him Lien in exchange for aid, to which he reluctantly agrees.

Volume 2

In "Best Day Ever", Emerald appears lost and runs into the shop owner of the newly reopened From Dust Till Dawn, asking for directions to a certain address. As she rounds a corner, Mercury states that he knew she was lost and she offers to pay him to be quiet using money she stole from the shop owner. They arrive at a book store owned by a Faunus named Tukson.

Emerald begins to ask if he has certain books because of his shop's catchphrase, but she eventually asks him for a book that he does not have. Things turn serious as Emerald reveals that she knows he is planning on running from the White Fang and that he knows why they are there. She asks him if he is planning to fight back and he shouts "Yes" before lunging at her. She ducks under him and Mercury kicks him as he is in the air, thus killing him.

Emerald and Mercury then return to Roman's base and he questions where they were all day; taking the address from Emerald's pocket without her noticing. Emerald and Mercury confirm that they were cleaning up Roman's mess. When Roman threatens them, Cinder appears and Emerald informs her that they killed Tukson; but Cinder seems more annoyed at their actions as it risks ruining her plan. Emerald then leaves with Cinder, but shows Roman that she managed to steal his lighter.

In "Welcome to Beacon", Emerald is seen with Mercury and Cinder inside Beacon Academy, posing as students from Haven Academy. She bumps into a running Ruby while walking down a hallway. Emerald helps her up, but tells her to mind where she is going. She is then redirected with Mercury and Cinder by Ruby who points them in the direction of their building as transfer students.

In "Extracurricular", Emerald is seen observing a battle between Pyrrha Nikos and Team CRDL, and later Pyrrha against Mercury. Later that day, in a dorm room with Cinder and Mercury, they all begin to talk about Pyrrha's semblance, and how skilled she is, as also listening to Cinder's plan.

In "Dance Dance Infiltration", Emerald and Mercury are seen entering the ballroom together. From here, the duo spends the evening keeping track of the attendees, watching to see if anyone could interfere with Cinder's infiltration of the Cross Continental Transmit Tower. At one point, Emerald warns Cinder that James Ironwood is leaving to check on the tower. However, Cinder is able to finish her task and return to the dance before he can see her. Emerald then lets Cinder take her place as Mercury's dance partner for the remainder of the evening.

In "Breach", Emerald assists Teams RWBY and JNPR in killing Grimm; easily slaying an Ursa using her weapons. She is later present as Adam Taurus appears by Cinder's side, explaining that the White Fang will listen to him, despite numerous losses in the caves.

Volume 3

In "Round One", at the Vytal Festival fairgrounds, Emerald steals Ruby's wallet before returning it to her. She strikes up a friendly conversation with Team RWBY, and it is revealed that she is participating in the tournament alongside Mercury, Cinder and an undercover Neopolitan.

After exchanging pleasantries with Team RWBY, she turns to Mercury and expresses her distaste for all of them, telling him she cannot stand how they always seem so cheery. However, she also shares the intel they had been sent to get: Weiss and Yang will be fighting in round two. Emerald, Mercury and Cinder are then seen spectating the match between Team JNPR and Team BRNZ.

In "It's Brawl in the Family", Emerald is later seen at Cinder's dorm room when Mercury reports Qrow Branwen's presence at Beacon. She asks Cinder if they need to change their plans, but Cinder tells them that they will stay the course. After Cinder gains access to Ironwood's Scroll, she tells Emerald and Mercury to return to their dorms.

In "Lessons Learned", Cinder engineers the next match of the Vytal Festival tournament doubles round: Emerald and Mercury against Coco Adel and Yatsuhashi Daichi of Team CFVY. Emerald and Mercury easily win the match.

In "Fall", after Mercury "loses" his match against Yang and has his leg broken by her apparently unprovoked, Emerald calls out his name and immediately rushes to his side, apparently showing concern for him. This was ultimately revealed to be an illusion created by Emerald, designed to trick Yang into attacking and one of the paramedics into thinking that Mercury's legs are real.

In "Beginning of the End", Cinder, Emerald and Neo evacuate Mercury in an Air Bus to their secret warehouse and head back to the Vytal Festival.

In "Destiny", Ruby sees Emerald in the front row of the Colosseum for the match between Pyrrha and Penny Polendina, even though Ruby was told Mercury's team all went back to Mistral the previous night.

In "PvP", Emerald uses her Semblance to make Pyrrha use her Semblance forcefully on Penny's swords. This causes the wires attached to them to wrap around Penny and split her in half, destroying her. Soon after, Emerald leaves the grandstands of Amity Colosseum.

In "Battle of Beacon", Emerald is seen on a rooftop with Cinder and Mercury, expressing a hint of remorse at the destruction caused by the chaos. Suddenly, she is interrupted by the arrival of the Grimm Dragon, as she remains on the rooftop.

Volume 4

In "The Next Step", Emerald is seen at Salem's Domain surveying its surroundings and accompanying Cinder alongside Mercury. She also acts as Cinder's voice due to the loss of her own speaking capabilities.

In "Of Runaways and Stowaways", Emerald is seen watching Cinder receive "treatment" from Salem. When a Seer enters Salem's meeting room, Emerald is disgusted and fearful of it. After Salem asks Cinder if she really killed Ozpin, Cinder signals for Emerald to help her respond, but Salem slams the table and demands Cinder say it with her own words, which makes Emerald step back.

In "No Safe Haven", Emerald watches Cinder train with Grimm. Upon completing her training, Cinder orders Emerald to create a vision of a kneeled and defeated Ruby Rose, which she mercilessly incinerates.

Volume 5

In "Rest and Resolutions", Cinder arrives at the Branwen Tribe campground with Watts, Emerald and Mercury.

In "A Perfect Storm", They tell Raven to bring Vernal as the Spring Maiden to Haven Academy to unlock its Relic's chamber. After negotiations, Emerald and the group return to a ship where they take rest.

In "The More the Merrier", Emerald accompanies Cinder as she leads the assault at Haven and later stops Ruby from helping Jaune. As they fight, Emerald reveals to Ruby that she does not care for working for Salem, but owes Cinder everything. When Ruby unleashes her powers to stop Cinder from harming Jaune, Emerald quickly knocks her out, though Cinder has been already been affected by the power.

In "Vault of the Spring Maiden", Emerald and Mercury team up against Yang, using her illusions to create multiple copies of Mercury. They quickly get the upper hand on her until Ruby wakes up and intervenes.

In "Downfall", Ruby and Yang are battling Emerald and Mercury as the Mistral authorities arrive to arrest the White Fang. Seeing an opportunity, Yang runs off to confront her mother and Cinder in the vault. Emerald tries but fails to stop Yang from going in. Emerald and Mercury chase after her, but are blocked from the vault by Weiss, who freezes the entrance.

In "Haven's Fate", Emerald, Mercury, and Hazel are cornered by Ruby Rose and her allies. Emerald declares they haven't won yet, saying that Cinder would be back any minute with the Relic of Knowledge and that she would stop them. However, everyone soon sees that only Yang leaves the vault, carrying the Relic. Now knowing of Cinder's apparent demise, she breaks down in tears, not listening to Mercury when he says they need to leave. In despair, Emerald cries out, creating an illusion visible to everyone in the room of a nightmarish apparition of Salem. Though it quickly disappears, it was enough to let them escape; an unconscious Emerald is carried by Hazel as he runs off with Mercury.

Volume 6

In "So That's How It Is", Emerald attends a meeting called by Salem, where Hazel admits that it was Cinder's fault that they lost the Battle of Haven. Salem tells them all that they must leave Cinder behind, though Emerald is just enthused to hear that she is still alive.

In "Lost", Emerald regrets leaving Cinder behind and considers that fact that she may not want to continue what she is doing without her. Mercury has to tell her that Cinder does not are about her, causing her to get angry and attack him. The two fight until Tyrian intervenes, telling them that if they do not love what they do regardless of the circumstances, they are in over their heads already. He then leaves, telling them that he and Watts have been assigned a special mission in Atlas.

In "Our Way", Emerald goes to apologize to Mercury, but finds him staring out a window, shocked. She looks to see Salem creating hybrid Beringels with wings on their backs. Hazel tells them that she is taking matters into her own hands.

Volume 8

In “Divide”, Emerald, Mercury, and Hazel go to meet with Salem. After climbing the stairs, Emerald sees her old master standing with Salem. The young subordinate is thrilled Cinder is alright and happily jogs towards her. However, before Emerald can get any closer, Cinder rudely interrupts her, telling her to be quiet, which causes Emerald to stop and feel saddened. After Salem tells Cinder she is not a player in her game against Ozpin, she waves her hand, and she along side the other subordinates leave.

In “Fault”, After Cinder decides to go behind Salem’s back in finding the Winter Maiden, Emerald overhears her master’s secret plan and volunteers to help Cinder and Neo.

In "Amity", after Penny, Maria, and Pietro launched Amity into the atmosphere, Emerald along with Cinder and Neopolitan ambush the three. Cinder proclaims she had hoped Ruby and her friends were there. She tells Penny, she is nothing but a tool to be used by her friends. Penny argues back that the Fall Maiden doesn't know what she's talking about, and the two Maidens proceed to do battle. As the two Maidens fight, Maria, piloting a giant mech suit intervenes, but is rammed by Neo, piloting the aircraft. Maria pins Neo's craft to the arena floor, but the mech's grip loosens as Neo back up. Emerald uses her semblance on Maria and makes her believe the aircraft disappeared. Only for it reappear and immobilize Maria's mech. Emerald tells Neo to follow her to Cinder.

The fight between Cinder and Penny continues. The Fall Maiden uses her flame semblance to melt the metal beams supporting the platform Pietro is standing on. Penny uses her Maiden powers to freezes the beams, leaving her open for Cinder. The Fall Maiden latches onto the Winter Maiden and uses her Grimmm hand to siphon Penny's aura, but in an act of desperation, Penny creates ice swords to throw Cinder off of her and pin her to the wall. Emerald rushes to Cinder aid, in which the Fall Maiden quickly recovers. Penny and Cinder fly towards the middle of the stadium, where Emerald makes Penny think Cinder has clones surrounding her. As the Cinders attack, Penny uses her eyes to track Cinder's heat signature, and blasts the Fall Maiden with a beam of energy. The Fall Maiden is knocked unconscious and Emerald runs towards her master, stricken with fear and worriment. Emerald pulls out one her guns and fires at Penny. The bullet misses her, but nearly hits Pietro. The young thief claims she can't beat Penny, but she can fill the controls of Amity full of holes. Emerald with an unconscious Cinder and a disgruntled Neo make their leave.

In "Midnight", after Cinder has regained consciousness, Emerald immediately goes to her master's side. Expressing relief Cinder has recovered quickly. Cinder, however, expresses disappointment in Emerald for bringing them back to Monstra, and in their failure for obtaining the Winter Maiden powers. Emerald tries to justify her reasoning. Mercury to enter the room, and tells Emerald, she doesn't need anymore help. Emerald tells Mercury Cinder's hunch was right, but Mercury rudely interrupts the girl and angrily tells her to stop defending Cinder. Telling her Cinder doesn't care about her. A frustrated Cinder tells Emerald and Mercury to await further orders, only for Mercury to talk back at Cinder. Saying he won't be taking any more orders from her anymore.

On the bridge, Emerald and the other subordinates of Salem's are told Arthur Watts has been in contact with Tyrian, giving them vital information. Salem then turns her attention to Cinder, to which the immortal witch uses her powers to cause Cinder agony for disobeying her. But Salem quickly stops and sends Cinder on a mission to free Watts, and find Penny, but is sending the Hound to find the Winter Maiden as well. Emerald watches as Monstra touches down onto the Atlas fields and regurgitates pools of Grimm.

In "War", Salem is using Monstra to vomit pools after pools of Grimm, unaware Emerald is watching her. Emerald walks through the fleshy hallways of Monstra, she comes across Hazel and Oscar. Eavesdropping on their conversation, the tortured boy tells Hazel of Salem's ultimate plan to find all the Relics and bring about the end of Remnant. Emerald asks Mercury if he's still going to Vacuo. He tells her of Salem's plan in obtaining the Sword of Destruction. She tells Mercury of what she heard, but her partner brushes it off, saying Hazel's not going to pick fights he can't win, and Salem is not ending the world. Tyrian, however, says otherwise. The psychotic Faunus tells the two young ones if they hadn't known from the start, then they were out of their minds. Tyrian and Mercury make their way to the aircraft, readying themselves for the deserts of Vacuo. Before departing, Emerald gives a reassuring glance at Mercury, and he gives her one back.

In "Witch", Emerald and Hazel bring Oscar to the Lamp's room, wherein Oscar summons Jinn. Confirming to both he was telling the truth. Hazel makes the decision to betray Salem and to get Emerald and Oscar away from her. Emerald is shocked but agrees to Hazel's decision, completely aware of what Salem truly desires. The three leave to Lamp alone, knowing it is rigged with an alarm. Unfortunately, the trio are unaware that Neo was eavesdropping on them, and the mute girl takes the Lamp for herself.

Emerald uses her semblance to disguise Oscar into looking like Hazel. While enroute to the exit, they come across Salem. Their ruse is nearly compromised, even though her semblance is successfully fooling Salem into think Oscar is Hazel, but with convenient timing, the Seers grimm begin screeching, alarming Salem of intruders, and the witch queen tells the two to find the intruders. Salem quickly makes her exit, and the duo make their's. With Salem gone, Emerald and Oscar come across Yang's group. The five make begin making their escape. Nearly outside, the five are stopped by Salem. She easily overpowers the others, and traps them. Salem blames Emerald for stealing the Lamp, but the girl tells the witch the truth. Salem doesn't believe her and prepares to torture Emerald. In the nick of time, Hazel shows up, and Salem orders him to tend to Emerald. Hazel agrees, but unbeknownst to the heroes and Salem herself, Hazel gives back Oscar his cain, and sucker punches Salem away from Emerald, freeing everyone from Salem's grasp. Now turncoat, Hazel stabs multiple dust crystals into his arms and shoulders. He tells them to make their escape, Emerald thanks him and she runs with the others. While locked in an intensive struggle with one another, Oscar stays behind to help Hazel. Hazel sacrifices himself and allows Oscar to use the magic stored away in Ozpin's cain to temporarily neutralize Salem, and destroy Monstra. But in the process, Hazel is vaporized.

In "Ultimatum", Emerald with Yang's group make their exit, using the Atlas subway tunnels to evade the Ace-Ops, and other Atlas military personnel. Taking Emerald prisoner, the thief tells her captors she doesn't like them, and they don't like her, and proposes the idea both parties don't have to see each other again. Yang and Jaune tell her she isn't going anywhere. Oscar pleads for them to forgive Emerald and asks them to trust her. Yang is opposed to the idea of trusting Emerald, since the girl did have a hand in causing the downfall of Beacon, and caused Yang to lose her right arm. Emerald and the others come across a numerous amounts of scared citizens. Emerald sees the crowds of scared people and Oscar asks for her help.

Later, Yang's group reunites with Ruby at the Schnee Manor. The silver eyed girl sees Emerald and angrily glares at the other, both preparing to fight. Oscar immediately tells Ruby, Emerald is with them now. Unfortunately, their happy reunion is cut short with a message from Ironwood. Video footage of Atlesian mantas destroying SDC shipping crafts, and offers them an ultimatum of bringing Penny to him or let Mantle be destroyed.

In "Risk", Ruby and company try and think of a game plan in stopping Ironwood once, and for all. Backed into a corner, and with no options left, Ruby tells them it's impossible, and the distrust against Emerald quickly rises. Ruby tells the heroes they're back where they were two days ago. Much later, the virus controlling Penny takes control and she starts to fly away. Team RWBY, Team ORNJ, and Emerald anchor down the Winter Maiden, In an act of desperation, Penny pleads for Ruby to kill her so she may have the Maiden powers. Nora insists the virus is just apart of her, and Jaune to use his semblance to allow Penny to temporarily take control over herself again. In order to lighten the mood of dread looming over the heroes, Emerald admits she'll be pissed the moment the heroes gave up after she's switched sides. Oscar agrees to let Ozpin take over, and the former headmaster apologizes to the group, saying he should have told them the truth rather than keeping it from him, and then running away. Seeing the virus trying to take effect, Nora tells the group Penny needs to go to the vault, this gives Ruby an idea.

In "Creation", Ironwood, Winter, and the Ace-Ops are seen awaiting the arrival of Penny. The Maiden tells Ironwood she doesn't want anymore death, and to which the general tells her she's made the right decision. However, it was all a ruse and Penny becomes Emerald, saying it feels weird to do the right thing. Emerald helps Team ORNJ and Winter take down the general, and the six begin phase two of the evacuation of Atlas.

In "Worthy", unknown to Emerald, Cinder, Watts, and Neo have asked Jinn the final question, and the three enemies of Team RWBY become aware of Emerald's betrayal. In the Central Location, Emerald, Oscar, Ren, and Nora lead crowds of Atlesians to a portal leading to Vacuo. On the other side, with hundreds of others, Emerald, Oscar, and Ren are caught in the middle of a sandstorm with an army of Grimm approaching. Oscar tries going back, but the portal doesn't allow him, leaving them stuck. The heroes draw their weapons, preparing to battle the onslaught of Grimm.

In "The Final Word", Emerald, Oscar, and Ren continue fighting the Grimm in the sandstorm. Growing weary from the endless amounts of cannon fodder, Winter, now made Winter Maiden shows up and uses her powers to fight back the Grimm.

RWBY: Amity Arena

Emerald appears in RWBY: Amity Arena as a playable unit. When deployed, she creates copies of friendly units on the battlefield.

Powers and Abilities

Emerald's weapons can take two main forms - primarily, they act as a pair of dual-wielded pistols, but they can also be converted into a pair of kama, the blades of which can detach and be swung from chains as kusarigama. Emerald seems to be quite adept with her weapons, demonstrating skilled swordsmanship and marksmanship, using both of her weapon forms to fend off the Grimm single-handedly in the episode "Breach". She later demonstrated the ability to ensnare opponents in her chains and reel them in, even from a great distance.

Emerald is stated by Mercury to be a master thief, and she has proven that she is adept at pickpocketing, with one victim being Roman Torchwick, stealing his lighter to show him that she was a capable thief after he mocked her. As seen in her fight with Coco Adel, her stealth abilities allow her to move silently and attack from an enemy's blind spot.

Emerald is also shown to have impressive reflexes, allowing her to avoid Tukson lunging at her and dodge Coco's rapid gunfire with ease.

Emerald's Semblance is individual mental hallucinations - the ability to modify the sensory information in a person's head while their brain is processing it. She can make one (or more) see and hear things that aren't necessarily there. In other words, instead of generating an illusion that everyone nearby can see, she causes her target to hallucinate.

This power was pivotal in Cinder Falls's plot to rig the Vytal Festival and incite anger and distrust towards Beacon Academy. After Yang Xiao Long's victory against Mercury in the singles battle, she made Yang see a hallucination of Mercury getting up and attacking her, prompting Yang to counterattack by supposedly breaking his leg. However, in reality, Mercury had not attacked at all, making Yang's counter seem, to everybody watching, like an unprovoked attack in cold blooded spite. The resulting anger, outcry, shock and distrust from the masses of watchers stirred the Grimm wandering Mountain Glenn, as the Goliaths turned their attention to Vale.

Before this her power had been used to lead Amber into a trap to steal her maiden powers, where Emerald made Amber see a crying child on the road, prompting the maiden to lower her guard; and also in her and Mercury's fight against Coco and Yatsuhashi Daichi of Team CFVY. She used her power to hide herself and Mercury from the eyes of her opponents. After Emerald pulled Coco into the canopy section of the arena, Emerald tricked her again by making her see Yatsuhashi come up to her, seemingly victorious, only to have his knock out announced and broadcasted in the other section of the ring. Emerald then seized the opportunity to attack a bewildered Coco and knock her out as well, winning the doubles match.

Emerald's semblance was also the main reason Cinder first scouted her, having witnessed Emerald use her power to trick a jewel merchant, in order to steal one of his rings - the merchant just smiled at her, as she took the ring right before his eyes.

Her power is however shown to have its limits. Whilst she seems capable of controlling a single mind, controlling any more than that seems to tax her own head severely. After playing an illusion on two medics who came to pick up Mercury so they would not see his mechanical legs, she is shown to have a considerable headache. Manipulating multiple minds appears to have a severe affect on her mind, shown when she creates a massive illusion of Salem after the Battle of Haven, which everyone present can see. The fact that it was out of despair of Cinder's apparent death suggests that her emotional state can also affect the illusions she creates.

  • "Sustrai" (capitalized) is the Basque word for "thief" while "sustrai" (not capitalized) means "roots" or "undercurrent". It may also comes from the Spanish word "sustraer" which means "to steal" or "rob".

  • The basis of Emerald's character, is based off of the main character from Aladdin This is obvious from her name making allusion to the phrase "diamond in the rough", which is spoken in the Disney adaptation of the tale.
    • Also, in the episode "Best Day Ever", Roman refers to Emerald as a "street rat", a term used to describe the title character of Aladdin.
  • In the Japanese dubbed version, Emerald is voiced by Marina Inoue, who also voiced Dark Tohka in Date A Live and Whitley Schnee also in the Japanese dub of RWBY.
