Emilia Ludwell (in Japanese: エミリア・ルードウェル, Emiria Rūdoweru) is a supporting antagonist-turned-supporting protagonist in the 2018 Japanese fantasy light novel series The Misfit of Demon King Academy, as well as its manga and anime television series adaptations. She serves as a minor antagonist in the Demon King Academy Arc, the secondary antagonist of the Magic Sword Tournament Arc and a supporting character for the rest of the series.
Emilia was voiced by Ami Koshimizu in the Japanese version of the anime adaptation and by Dawn M. Bennett in the English version. Koshimizu's other villainous roles include Shizuri Mugino in A Certain Magical Index, Kouyou Ozaki in Bungo Stray Dogs, and Rosa Ushiromiya in Umineko When They Cry.
Biography[]
Emilia was a member of the Royalty, a term attributed to demons who possessed pure-blood. Like many members of the Royalty, Ludwell was incredibly xenophobic towards her mixed-blood kin whom she considered to be lesser by default. As a young woman, Emilia earned a position as a teacher in the Demon King Academy Delzogade, a prestigious institution dedicated to the cultivation of future Demon Lords.
Eventually, a young man named Anos Voldigoad came under Emilia's tutorship. Voldigoad, who was the reincarnation of the Demon King of Tyranny who acted as the founding ancestor of demon society, excelled in all fields and far surpassed any other demon in terms of magical and physical power. Despite this, Emilia refused to acknowledge him as he was a human/demon hybrid boasting mixed-blood.
Emilia tried to sabotage her pupil several times, although her efforts were in vain as Voldigoad always anticipated her actions and humiliated her. After some time tutoring Anos, Emilia plotted with her fellow Royalists to upstage Voldigoad in the Magic Sword Tournament that displayed a demon's true aptitude. However, Emilia went too far when she assaulted and nearly killed several of her hybrid students who were trying to protect Anos' place in the tournament.
In response to Emilia's malicious actions, Voldigoad brutally beat and killed Ludwell. Instead of leaving her dead, Anos resurrected her as a human/demon hybrid. In the process, he also placed a curse on Ludwell ensuring that every time she died, she would be reincarnated as a mix-blood, ensuring that the Royalist teacher would be forever locked into her new form.
Later on, she is found dressed in rags by Anos's mother Izabella being assaulted by Imperial Academy students due to her new form as a half-demon. Despite her protests of coming from a family of pure-blooded demons, they ignore her and keep beating the hibbie jibbies out of her. The mother steps in to help Emilia who, despite having attempted murder on her previously, takes a blast of fire intended to hit Izabella.
Afterwards, Izabella takes Emilia in to have her wounds tended to in a room at the back. This marks the start of Emilia's redemption.
Powers & Abilities[]
Emilia was a potent magician powerful enough to prove worthy of tutoring the students of the Demon King Academy, an institution specifically dedicated to cultivating powerful demons. She had an impressive knowledge of historical, political, and arcane practices, regardless of whether the information she had been fed on these topics was false. Her power was able to eclipse the combined force of eight of her students simultaneously. Despite her impressive magical power, she stood no chance against the Demon King of Tyranny himself. As a demon, Emilia's lifespan far exceeded that of a human's.
Magic[]
- Fless: Fless was a spell, which, when used, allowed the caster to levitate. With the spell, Emilia could defy gravity and fly through the sky like a bird.
- Gusgum: With the low-level fire spell Gusgum, Emilia could conjure purple and black fire out of thin air. She could manipulate the amount and potency of the fire as well as the direction it faced. The fire could reach temperatures high enough to char human flesh. Emilia's potency with the spell was impressive as she was able to break through a magical barrier conjured simultaneously by eight individuals.
- Guys: The spell Guys allowed Emilia to share her magical power and effects with several other individuals, strengthening her allies. Naturally, the magical power of Emilia would be depleted during the use of the spell as her energy was being transferred to her allies.
