~ Voss to Indiana Jones
This is my...my...THIS IS MY ARK... MY ARK!!!
~ Voss' last words before his demise.

Emmerich Voss is the main antagonist of the 2024 action-adventure video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

He is a Nazi archaeologist for the Third Reich Special Antiquities Collection and a rival and enemy of Indiana Jones, coming into conflict with Indy when it is discovered that both are trying to decipher the mystery of the Great Circle, each for different reasons.

He is voiced by Marios Gavrilis.

Biography[]

General[]

Emmerich Voss was associated with the special antiquities divisions of the Nazi bureaucracy. Around October 1937, he formed an uneasy alliance with Wehrmacht colonel Viktor Gantz as part of Voss' pursuit of relics connected to the mystery of the Great Circle. While Gantz was skeptical of occultism, Voss was able to manipulate him into being a useful ally.

Indiana Jones And The Great Circle[]

Voss appears for the first time arriving at the Vatican in his airship, there he is received by Benito Mussolini himself and Father Ventura, all of this observed by Indiana Jones and Gina Lombardi.

Later in the ruins of the Vatican, while Jones and Gina were looking for the feline mummy, Locus (a giant of the Nephilim order) appears and begins to fight with Jones, however after the fight, Voss, Mussolini and Ventura appear. which forces Indy to hide with his companions, while they also talk about the Pope's condition, Father Ventura shows Voss and Mussolini the relics in the area, but tells them not to try to take anything. Mussolini and Voss ignore Ventura's request, with Mussolini saying that Voss will take whatever he needs for his mission, Ventura begins to panic thinking that the Pope would punish him for this, however Voss interrupts him and threatens to uncover the secrets, dirty laundry from the father if he continues to bother them and promises that he will make him an outcast if he does not say what they order him.

Once the situation is clarified, Voss grabs the feline mummy that Jones was looking for and breaks it, revealing a strange stone on which there was writing in Adamic. Voss, satisfied with finding the first stone, places it in his briefcase and orders his men who break more statues to look for the rest of the stones. Mussolini, curious, asks Voss what exactly they are seeing, to which Voss responds that these stones are the relics of the mysterious "Great Circle." Father Ventura, shocked by Voss's actions, explains that it took centuries for the Vatican to collect the thirteen relics of the Great Circle and that not all of them are counted, Voss, however, responds that there are still four more stones to recover and that thanks to his skills in archeology and the resources of Germany he will be able to obtain them in a matter of weeks. Ventura, however, warns him of the danger of the stones and the power they contain if they fall into the wrong hands, but Voss knows perfectly well what he is looking for and that is precisely why Hitler sent him to look for them. Mussolini asks if Italy will also benefit from this search to which Voss tells him not to worry, since once he recovers all the stones the two nations will be unstoppable, then proceeds to leave with his men, which leaves Father Ventura quite terrified and worried.

Voss proceeds to leave the Vatican in his airship, however Indiana Jones, who had observed the entire scenario and knowing that the stones must not fall into the hands of the Nazis, decides to follow him along with Gina Lombardi who is looking for her missing sister Laura Lombardi, and she thinks Voss has something to do with it. After an encounter with Locus and other giants, Indy and Gina manage to board the airship, which was now destined for Giza, Egypt. Once there, Indy and Gina watch Voss meet again with Colonel Gantz, who receives him with hostility, because the two do not get along. They both begin to argue and Gantz threatens to shoot him if he does not find the stones soon, but Voss tells him. He ignores him and asks him if the giant they captured and tortured has already spoken, and if he doesn't speak, Voss himself will be in charge of doing so. Then he gets into his car with his driver Bergmann and tells him that no one is easier to manipulate than an insecure man, then he goes to his office.

Later, Indy and Gina go to Voss' office in search of clues. Fortunately, Voss was not present at the time, so they were able to investigate without needing to worry, but then they decide to seek out Voss himself for answers about the relics and Laura. When they arrive at the place they decide to spy on Voss and Gantz from the roof thanks to a loose board, there Voss finds the body of the dead giant, due to the wounds that Gantz inflicted on him, and reprimands him, Gantz only says that since the giant did not want to speak, he decided to end his life. Voss, furious at this act, tells him that he only tolerated it out of respect for the Führer but that what he had just done was an act of betrayal, Gantz also gets fed up and takes out his gun pointing at Voss, Gantz says that he has all the authority of the Wehrmacht and that he could shoot him right then and there and no one would question why he did it. Voss is not affected by Gantz's threats and instead proceeds to mock him by comparing him to an ape and to humiliate him even more he decides to imitate one. Gantz, without any patience, grabs Voss by the neck and puts him against the table, but Voss still doesn't look scared and instead reminds Gantz that the giant was the only way to unlock the entrance to the relic and asks him how he will deal with the problem now again calling him a chimpanzee.

But just at that moment the ceiling breaks making Indiana Jones and Emmerich Voss see each other's faces for the first time in the game, Voss and Indy already seemed to know each other before. Voss mockingly declares that he missed their conversations but Indy does not seem to share the same opinion, Jones orders Gina to keep an eye on Voss while he investigates the room, Gina pulls a gun on Voss and questions him about Laura, but Voss doesn't say anything and only responds sarcastically about how Gina only came here alone to "save her", then Voss decides to mess with Jones, questioning him about why he is here, makes fun of Indiana's failed relationship with Marion Ravenwood and then makes fun of how Indy fears becoming a father or Henry Jones Sr. But Jones does not fall for Voss's mind games and continues his investigation.

Personality[]

Despite his great knowledge and intelligence, at his core Voss is a power-hungry egotist who wants to bring the Nazi’s power through the Great Circle. Using his knowledge of the human mind, he’s able to manipulate people to serve his ends unintentionally or not. His arrogance also leads him to berate, blame and insult people he considers inferior to himself, proving how much of a high opinion he has of his own brilliance. Despite how smart he is, Voss makes the same mistake most villains in the series have made, underestimating the Ark’s power as it starts a flood. At his end, he claims the Ark for himself, showing that he fails to see his own shortcomings when things spiral out of control.
