~ Emmet bragging about how he used to kill people. |
Emmet Granger is a minor antagonist in Red Dead Redemption 2, appearing in the optional mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman". He is a former gunslinger tracked down by the player (either Arthur Morgan or John Marston depending on at what point the player accepts the mission) for information about Jim "Boy" Calloway.
He is voiced by Matte Osian.
Biography[]
Emmet is a former gunslinger and outlaw associated with Jim Calloway, who was an incompetent, drunken coward despite his in-game heroic reputation. Described as a "pervert, killer [and] hog fancier", Emmet killed men, women, and children in various ways, including shooting, stabbing, skinning, scalping, beating, burning and burying alive. He also claims that he used to kill, stuff and eat people who he considered "effeminate". He participated in a massacre in Beaver Brook in 1882, murdered the Laidlaw family in 1886 and was a suspect in the 1890 Chaparral killings. Eventually Emmet was able to obtain a federal pardon in 1895 by informing on the Fosse gang, leading to their arrest. Afterwards he settled down on a hog farm in New Hanover, North Carolina.
If the player accepts the mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", they are given the names of four outlaws - Emmet, Black Belle, Billy Midnight and Flaco Hernández - to track down and interview about Jim Calloway for his biography. Emmet can be found on his pig farm near Flatneck Station. Emmet initially refuses to give an interview and is irritated that the book is about Calloway rather than him. However, he agrees to tell the player stories if they muck out his pigsty. While the player carries out this task, Emmet sadistically reminisces about his previous crimes and informs the player that Calloway "weren't nothing". However, after finishing the task the player asks for more information and Emmet refuses; he only said he would tell him stories, not stories about Calloway.
Angry at Emmet's refusal to cooperate, the player takes a stick of dynamite, lights it and places it in Emmet's manure heap. The resultant explosion coats Emmet in manure and prompts him to pull a knife and challenge the player to a duel. He will then attempt to knife the player, who must shoot him dead. Upon killing Emmet the player is to photograph his corpse to bring back to Calloway's biographer, who credits Calloway with killing Emmet.
Trivia[]
- The duel with Emmet is unique in that he uses a throwing knife rather than a handgun. This is advantageous for the player for the most part, because the knife throw will be cancelled in the air when Emmet is killed. This gives the player more time, as they can potentially shoot after the knife has been thrown and still win the duel. However, Emmet turns side-on when he throws his knife, making him a narrower target and therefore slightly more difficult to hit.
- If the player attempts to defeat Emmet non-lethally by tying him up with their lasso, he will cut himself free after a few seconds. Attempting to pick him up after tying him up will result in the player being headbutted in the face.
- Granger is a parody of William Munny from Unforgiven. Whereas Munny transforms on-screen from a seemingly incompetent farmer to a cold killer who reverts to his old formidable skill, Granger does the opposite: he initially talks tough but reveals himself to be a weak old man.
- Unlike Flaco, Midnight and Calloway, Granger is the only gunslinger who the player deliberately antagonises into a gunfight.
- Granger's sadism and cruelty and his status as a government informant parallels him to Micah Bell.
