Belos said that mixing magic was wrong, that only he had that right. So he created the coven system. And there, our knowledge was restricted, and our potential sealed away. Those who resist are called wild witches, and they face harsh punishment.
~ King reading The Unauthorised Boiling Isles History to Luz.

The Emperor's Coven are the main antagonists of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House. It is one of the many covens Emperor Belos established in Boiling Isles following his rise of power and serves directly under him as his personal enforcers. At first, the coven seems to comprise of exemplary spellcasters that every witch on the Boiling Isles aspired to become as well as benevolent enforcers who helped maintain the order by regulating the use of magic in the Isles. However, Eda, Luz, King, and later its own member Lilith soon discovered this to be, in fact, a façade to conceal Belos' true goal and the coven system's more sinister purpose.

History[]

Season 1[]

The Emperor's Coven first appears in "A Lying Witch and a Warden" where the Emperor's Guard shows up and declares to arrest Eda and, King only for Eda to escape with Luz. They later appear helping Warden Wrath try to stop Luz and the others from escaping the Conformatorium after they broke in.

They appear in "Covention", along with Lilith presenting the coven to everyone attending the event.

In "Once Upon a Swap", The Emperor's Guards capture Luz (who was in Eda's body at the moment) after she tried to attract more customers to the stand with a flashy sign, which makes a fortune. Luz tries to convince them that she is not Eda but Lilith and the Guards don't listen. They later surround Luz, King, & Eda (along with Boscha and her friends, and Rosie & Dottie, who King and Eda encountered earlier respectively). Fortunately, Eda switches everyone's bodies, resulting in the guards ending up swapping in Rosie & Dottie's bodies, and Lilith to be swapped with the search dog they brought with them. The body swap was later undone offscreen.

In "Sense and Insensitivity", Lilith and a Coven Scout named Steve receive a map leading to the Bloom of Eternal Youth, a flower that would make whoever held it eternally young. Eda overhears this and decides to find the flower herself. However, when Lilith and Eda finally find the flower, it immediately disappears. The Merchant who told them about it appears and reveals he made up the flower to lure people into his trap. However, Eda and Lilith easily beat him up.

In "Agony of a Witch", Lilith and several other members attempt to capture Eda once and for all. They sneak in the woods and attempt to go in to kidnap her, only to end up being defeated by Hooty due to Eda not liking trespassers. They appear later in the castle during the tour given to the students of Hexside, and later watch Eda & Lilith battle in a witches' duel.

In "Young Blood, Old Souls," they were seen at Eda's petrification ceremony, and later tried to stop her, Luz, and King from escaping after Lilith betrayed Belos. They are last seen at the end of the episode rebuilding the portal to the Human Realm.

Season 2[]

The Emperor's Coven makes more appearances in Season 2. In "Separate Tide's" they are seen via Lilith's Scrying Potion guarding the palace. Two coven scouts appear with Hunter at the end of "Escaping Expulsion," when he purchases the entire Abomaton line for the coven from the Blight Family.

They are seen again in "Eda's Requiem," searching for wild witches to place them in covens, but their efforts were stopped by the BATTS. They later helped Kikimora search for Titan's Blood on the Knee with help from Abomatons in "Eclipse Lake," however, their mission failed due to the interference of Eda, King, Amity Blight, and Hunter, and because the lake had long been dried up of the blood.

The coven appears again in a flashback in "Yesterday's Lie," where it was revealed by Vee that they revived several basilisk, including herself to learn how they absorbed magic. However, Vee and several others escaped, and she used Eda's portal to flee to the Human Realm, where she unintentionally took Luz's place without her knowing.

In "Edge of The World," after Luz, Hooty, and King escaped from the Titan Trappers, coven scouts appear at the end of the episode surrounding the Owl House, preparing to arrest Eda and Lilith. Fortunately, the sisters escape, but everything in the house was confiscated by the guards.

In "Labyrinth Runners," the Emperor's Coven assisted Adrian Graye Vernworth in branding every student in Hexside with a coven sigil for the Day of Unity. However, thanks to Gus, the ruse was exposed, and they were all defeated by Hexside's students and facility, while Graye was temporarily comatose by Gus's magic, forcing them to retreat.

In "Oh Titan, Where Art Thou and Clouds on the Horizon," they are seen preparing for the Day of Unity, expressing how happy they'll be when it's over, completely unaware of the event's true purpose. After Luz and Eda break into their HQ, they were both captured. Eda is sent to be petrified again while Luz is sent to Belos. However, they are rescued by Raine Whispers and their resistance, with Steve revealing to have left the coven as well. They are later seen receiving the last of the Abomatons for the event, and capturing any wild witches trying to get in.

In "King's Tide," they are seen celebrating the Day of Unity with everyone present at the event. When the Draining Spell finally commences, they realize their leader's true intentions and try to escape, but the Abomatons seal them and everybody else inside. They are last seen having their magic and life force drained until The Collector stops the eclipse and the spell before it was completed. It is unknown what happened to the remaining members of the coven after Belos's "death" and The Collector's takeover of the isles, although it is likely that most of its members were turned into puppets by The Collector's Spies and stored in the Archives House to be used for The Collector's games, it was also shown that some of them managed to escape and survive in the wild for some months.

Season 3[]

Several members were shown helping to rebuild the Isles after Belos's final defeat in "Watching and "Dreaming", and they happily gave up their masks, meaning that their allegiance to Belos was now over and that the coven itself was disbanded along with all others, after Alador Blight managed to find a way to remove the coven's sigils, Belos's tyrannical institutions finally came to an end, and the Isles can now look out for a bright future where everyone can freely practice all forms of magic without any opposition, just as they did in the past.

Powers and Abilities[]

Unlike the other covens, the Emperor's Coven has access to all forms of magic: Abomination, Bard, Beast Keeping, Construction, Healing, Illusion, Oracle, Plant, Potions, and every other kind of magic in-between. This makes them incredibly skilled magic users. They also can use various weapons in combat but mostly use spears in battle.

Trivia[]

  • According to Hunter, members of the Emperor's Coven get to "sleep in" until 6 every morning, and only get one day off every year. He also says that those who enter the coven will be separated from their loved ones as well.
    • According to Steve, Belos makes new members give up their Palismen to help with his condition. He also states that before becoming official members, they have to go through basic training, which involves witches duels, mazes full of traps, and return from being left on a mountain.
      • In reference to the former, it is never explained why Lilith kept her Palismen when she joined, even though she was suppose to give it to Belos.
      • There is a theory that explains that Belos knew about Luz and Lilith's time travel to the past when he was still Philip Wittebane, and that's why he picked her as the coven leader and let her keep her palisman.
        • This may also be the reason of why Belos sent Flora D'splora to watch over Lilith, which provoked her to look out for the time pools with Luz.
          • This part of the theory was seemingly confirmed after one of the show's artists, Rebecca Rose, tweeted high-quality versions of the paintings from "Hollow Mind", including one in which Belos is seen whispering something to a sinisterly-looking Flora.
  • Only the best students from each school on the Boiling Isles are excepted into the coven. If two students apply for a single position, a duel is done to see who gets in.
  • The Emperor's Coven may be the closest thing the Boiling Isles has to a central government, as the Emperor still has absolute power and authority over everything and everyone else.
