Biography[]
Past[]
Nothing is known about Gruumm's past before he joined with the giant brain named Omni and formed the Troobian Empire with the ultimate goal of building him a massive body through planetary conquests. Gruumm's main strategy was always to overwhelm and devastate planets with constant, large-scale invasions and drain them theri resources. His ship could even destroy a planet from orbit. At some point, he met Morgana and turned her into a small girl in exchange for her loyalty.
However, his most notable conquest was the planet, Sirius, where Gruumm got the codes from the shields around the planet Sirius from Astronema so that he could deactivate them and attack the planet. The Emperor then launched and attack on Sirius, despite the planet forming the very first Space Patrol Delta, the Sirians fell to Gruumm's army of Krybots that was led by General Benaag.
During the battle Gruumm went to the battlefield himself and faced off against the first incarnation of S.P.D. Gruumm personally battled the Sirian Shadow Ranger Anubis Cruger, who cut off one of his horns, causing him to develop a grudge against Cruger. Gruumm later left Doggie to die and captured his wife Isinia Cruger (leaving Doggie to believe that she died on the battle) while the other Sirians were destroyed. Gruumm over the years conquered and slaughtered a large number of planets, with the Rangers once exaggerating to say he'd conquered everywhere but Earth. Kat Manx later said that her own homeworld had also fallen to the Troobian Empire.
SPD[]
In 2025, Grumm begins his attempts to take over Earth and succeeds in turning the S.P.D. A-Squad Power Rangers to his side, promising that they will rule the Earth alongside him. Gruumm launches an assault on Earth where he realizes that Doggie Cruger is the Earth Commander of S.P.D.
Initially, he has to steal His highly destructive tactics show life means little to him. It was initially unclear why he wasn't using such tactics to conquer Earth, except on rare occasions where he simply lost his temper and struck in force or attacked personally; in each case, he would have won if not for outside intervention (new weaponry for Cruger, the Omega Ranger, and Dino Thunder Rangers respectively). Gruumm first sends a Blue-Head Krybot to obtain a Proton Accelerator, but this fails due to interference by S.P.D.'s new B-Squad Rangers. He continues to launch assaults on the Earth, enlisting the help of the arms dealer Broodwing who gives him massive robots and Krybots for his plans. After multiple failures, Gruumm decides to go to Earth himself and challenges Anubis to battle in order to settle the rivalry they started on Sirius.
The B-Squad battled Gruumm only to be unable to match his combat skills and motorbike and later Supreme Commander Birdie Fowler faces him after he fires Cruger. The emperor easily beats him as well until Cruger arrives, morphs into the Shadow Ranger, and manages to drive him off. Later, Gruumm becomes tired of paying Broodwing for weapons and robots that keep failing anyways and forces him to provide his services for free. However, this makes Broodwing set out to conquer the Earth first as a form of payback.
Sometime after this, Gruumm uses a wormhole to go to the past to take over the Earth before S.P.D. ever existed and recruits Zeltrax in helping him take over. However, even their combined forces are unable to match the combined forces of the S.P.D. Rangers and the Dino Thunder Rangers and, although Gruumm plans to stay in the past, he heads back to 2025 after being shot by the Z-Rex Blaster. As time goes by, it becomes clear that Gruumm has been working on a long-term plan since he has not been employing his usual strategy.
Later, when Omni launches his final assault on Earth, Cruger (who had been captured by the renegade A-Squad SPD Rangers) is sent to Gruumm's Terror Spacecraft. As Omni's body begins to take shape, the B-Squad and Cruger escape and Cruger escapes his cell on Gruumm's ship. After Cruger captured Mora, the Shadow Ranger confronts Gruumm and the two fight until Gruumm and Cruger hang over the firey core at the heart of Omni. He tries to throw in Cruger's wife Isinia but instead slips and falls to his apparent death in the molten metal. After Omni is destroyed by the S.W.A.T. Megazord however, Gruumm emerges from the wreckage in front of SPD Headquarters amidst the celebrations to face Cruger one last time. Gruumm challenges his nemesis in one final battle but is no match for Cruger with his staff being destroyed so he demands Cruger kill him. Instead of killing Gruumm, Cruger cuts off the top of his remaining horn and contains Gruumm in a Containment Card much to his fury.
Power Rangers: Super Legends[]
Gruumm appears in the Nintendo DS version as the main antagonist who has set his sights upon the myth of the Hall of Legends, the resting place of the collected energies of Power Rangers across time. In his twisted mind, he envisions a world where his enemy's power is not only stolen but used to make him a living god over all creation. In the console version of the same game, he is merely mentioned.
Personality[]
Gruumm is an extremely ruthless, cold, sadistic, psychopathic and devious tyrant who would stop at nothing to destroy the SPD Rangers and take over the Earth and the entire universe. Throughout the series, he was shown to be as a cunning, scheming, calculating and relentless mastermind who secretly created plans of taking over the Earth and destroying the Delta Base. Gruumm's most notable feature and trait was his desire for vengeance against Doggie and his arrogance. Gruumm hated to be defeated and beaten by his enemies and considered himself invincible. And he was shocked and astonished when he was defeated on Sirius and lost his horn, considering himself disgraced.
From that time he started to plot his vengeance against the Shadow Ranger and his lust for revenge was so great that he decided to kidnap Cruger's wife Isinia and keep her on his ship in order to make Cruger believe that his beloved wife was dead, just to hurt Doggie. Also, despite his arrogant and confident nature, Gruumm is quite smart and calculating and is able to create cunning, intelligent and unpredictable plans of deceiving his enemies and his most notable plan was in the finale of the season, when he managed to gain over the renegade A-Squad Rangers to his side and convince the former most brilliant SPD cadets to betray Cruger and become villains. Eventually, this led to the capture of Cruger, who was caught off guard because he trusted the team of A-Squad and didn't expect for their treachery.
He was quite loyal and faithful to his master Omni, and loyally followed all of his orders, and was always polite and friendly to him. However, it's heavily implied that his care for his god and master was merely out of fear and personal gain, and not of genuine respect and loyalty. This was proven in the finale of the season, when Gruumm decided to take revenge on Cruger, not caring that his master was destroyed and dead.
Also, Gruumm possessed quite complicated relationships with his underlings, Mora and Broodwing, often treating them harshly and rudely and showing little to no respect to them. It was rare that Gruumm praised and congratulated them and rare examples were when he generously paid Broodwing for his services and aid. And he sometimes congratulated Morgana for her help and her talents of monster creation and sometimes reverted her back to her Mora form, which she loved. However, it's made clear that did this favors to his minions just out of pragmatism and not of genuine respect, which was proven lately when he subverted his redeeming qualities, such as for example when he didn't pay Broodwing for his robot sell, which eventually was Gruumm's mistake because this turned Broodwing against him. Broodwing eventually betrayed Gruumm and decided to take over the Troobian Empire for himself.

Trivia[]
- Before Omni actually appeared, Gruumm would often talk with him on his throne, but was seemingly talking to himself since though he spoke out loud, their conversations seemed to be telepathic in nature and Omni's responses were never heard.
- Because Grumm is always in the green glow of his ship, fans mistakenly believed it was his natural color; so his duller metal color (bronze and grey-blue) scheme in the field was a surprise.
- Emperor Gruumm is one of the most successful villains in Power Rangers, as not only has had many victories over Cruger, being the one to end his race, but he also successfully convinced an entire ranger team to betray S.P.D and join his side.
- Co-producer Greg Aronowitz clarifies in an interview that "Gruumm has always been Omni's puppet... [Gruumm] has power, but he has issues and he has weakness, and Omni has taken advantage of that for as long as time can remember." Given from this fact, Greg made his head expose a brain to give the idea that the brain is a powerful tool but also a weakspot. This foreshadows how Gruumm is presented as the head of his empire but serves as a pawn to the mastermind, Omni.
- In the same interview, Greg Aronowitz reveals that Gruumm's design is inspired by the Disney villain Maleficent. In fact, his horns looked identical to Maleficent's horns in early designs but had to be changed since it would make it as a copy of the character. Every detail had on the character's remained the same but made more man like just the horns changed.
- Gruumm has no Super Sentai counterpart, instead the main villain of Dekaranger was Agent Abrella, though he was the counterpart of Broodwing and not the Emperor himself.
- Since Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury was the last series set in the original continuity of the Power Rangers franchise since the original Mighty Morphin' in 1993; Emperor Gruumm serves as the chronological final antagonist of the original continuity, with the events of Cosmic Fury's alien exodus during the war against Squid Ink Inc leading to SPD's establishment on Earth and Gruumm's conflict with them coming along.
- It also makes sense why Grumm had such an easy time raiding planets for resources; they had already been left vulnerable by Bajilia and Lord Zedd's conquest.
- This also makes it easy to understand why A-Squad joined him; they knew that they would be utterly doomed if they went against Grumm's troops. It took almost every Ranger on earth to fight off Squid Ink Inc.
- His grudge with Cruger over a notable injury in their past battle along with losing both of his head horns by the end of the series gives him a resemblance to Captain Garoa; coincidentally both also served a malevolent entity posing as their spaceship, albeit Gruumm was aware of Omni's true nature as opposed to Garoa's obliviousness about Vulgyre.
