Encanis is the main antagonist in the Tehlin religion, which is a religion in The Kingkiller Chronicle, by Patrick Rothfuss. He is the most powerful demon in existence who caused mass destruction to humanity.
Biography[]
Encanis was the most powerful and malicious demon. He roamed the world, causing as much death and destruction as possible, along with all the other demons of the world.
Eventually, the god Tehlu caused himself to be born as a human. He gathered followers and punished those who wouldn't join him. Tehlu also set out to destroy all of the demons in the world.
Encanis fled from Tehlu for seven days (which at that time made a "span" or cyclic period of days in the calendar). On each day, Encanis destroyed a city. However, he was prevented from destroying a city on the seventh day.
On the eight day, Tehlu struck down encanis with his hammer. This day was henceforth known as Felling. On the ninth day, Tehlu constructed a massive iron wheel and bound Tehlu to it. This day was called Reaving. Tehlu offered Encanis the choice to join him. Encanis attempted to lie, but was unable to. On the tenth day, Tehlu threw Encanis into a pit of fire. This day was called Cendling. However, Encanis broke free of his bonds and tried to escape. Tehlu sacrificed himself by jumping into the pit to keep Encanis there, and they both died. The eleventh day was called Mourning.

The Iron wheel to which Encanis was bound is the symbol of the Tehlin religion.
The Span of days went from seven to eleven, with Felling, Reaving, Cendling, and Mourning being added. Mourning is considered a sacred day of prayer and abstinence from alcohol. At the end of the year (after 8 months, 32 spans, or 352 days) there are seven days of High Mourning. During this time, there is a Winter Pageant in which people dress up as Encanis, as well as other demons, and cause petty mischeif. A figure dressed as Tehlu stops them.
