Encyclopaedicus Britannicus, known as Caius Roideprus in the original French version, is the main antagonist of the 1966 Asterix comic book Asterix in Britain. He is the Roman governor of Londonium who wants to have the Magic Potion in his possession and capture Asterix, Obelix, and Anticlimax so they won't be able to use their superhuman strength to help the Britains resist against the Romans after Julius Caesar has conquered Britain.

Appearance[]

Encyclopaedicus Britannicus is a fat, blond-haired man with a white and yellow tunic, a blue cape and white shoes. He also has a black beard.

Biography[]

Encyclopaedicus Britannicus is first shown when the Romans have failed to stop the Gauls on their way to Londonium, where he wants them to be captured and have the Magic Potion in their possession. He then says that they will probably take refuge in a public house, so he orders his men to investigate every house and confiscate every barrel they can find until they find the one containing the Magic Potion. He then warns them that if they fail their mission, they will have them boiled and served to the lions.

As the Gauls arrive in Londonium using the fog to hide themselves from the Romans' sight, they take refuge inside Dipsomanix's pub as the Romans are still searching for them. Eventually, the Romans arrive and enters inside the bar to seize all the barrels in the cellar and bring them to Encyclopaedicus Britannicus's palace cellar so they can verify each of them and find the one containing the Magic Potion, without even finding Asterix, Obelix and Anticlimax in the pub due to them hiding under it.

In the palace cellar, the Romans are ordered to broach all the barrels at the same time and drink them all at once. Once they are finished, they mark the barrel with a cross on them. However, they continue drinking the barrels for hours, resulting in them becoming drunk. One legionary, however, finds the one with the Magic Potion, punching one of the other legionaries away and causing a fight between them, but is eventually defeated by Obelix as they take the barrels away, but Obelix drinks one of them, becoming drunk as well, which causes them to be spotted by the Romans due to his singing and assaulting them without going silently.

In the courtyard of the palace, Encyclopaedicus Britannicus is ashamed of the Romans for acting like barbarians, declining and falling all over the place, as he tells them that if Caesar hears of their behavior, they would be having a Roman holiday with the lions. He then orders them to search Dipsomaniax's pub and arrest everybody present in it, but a garrison of legionaries, who just came back from capturing Obelix, have already found them. The Romans then burn down the pub and capture Dipsomaniax alongside Obelix, who was drunk earlier as he attacked the Romans.

However, Obelix and Dipsomaniax manage to escape the tower of Londonium, while Asterix was climbingup the tower as well, beating up all the Romans inside it and breaking down the doors on each side. In the palace, Encyclopaedicus Britannicus is informed of their escape, as he flies into a rage and orders his garrison to get them back or they would be drowned in warm beer, later reducing him to tears as he is fed up with the whole boiling.

He then disguises them as muftis so they can mingle with the crowd during the Durovernum game. During the match, they exit their seats and go towards the field, despite the referee's protests. They spot the barrel and attempt to seize it while Asterix and Obelix were fighting the players, but they manage to escape, as the Romans are then beaten up by the players, failing their attempt. However, luckily for them, their ships are looking out for them in the river, who later destroy the boat and the barrel containing the Magic Potion, which succeeds their goal temporarily and leaving the Gauls vulnerable.

Glad that they finally managed to destroy the Magic Potion, Encyclopedius Britannicus informs his men of the good news, allowing them to attack the now powerless Britains in their village. As they were about to attack, however, they are informed that the Gauls are there as well as the Magic Potion, which leads them to an argument as their commander flies into a rage, ordering them to attack. As they refuse, Obelix orders them to attack to respect their discipline. The Britains and the Gauls then charge towards them, defeating the entire army and failing Encyclopaedicus' plan in the process.

Trivia[]
