Enid Baines is the main protagonist as well as antagonist of the 2021 live-action British horror film, CENSOR.

Enid is a young woman who worked as a movie-censored during the era of "Video Nasties", where gore-filled horror films were believed to be making people more violent. One day, Enid watches a horror film that causes her to obsess over the disappearance of her missing sister, whom had been missing since they were children. Enid is later revealed to have been censoring some unpleasant memories from her past that may have explained the disappearance of her sister.

As an adult, Enid is portrayed by Niamh Algar, and as a child is portrayed by Beau Gadsdon.

Personality[]

On the surface, Enid is a young woman whom is determined to help protect the public from violent media. Amongst her fellow coworkers, she is one of the more tolerant when it comes to viewing horrifying scenes in movies, also being more strict about what they remove. She was seemingly known around the office as the perfectionist of the workspace. It would later be revealed that Enid is obsessed with finding her lost sister, as she is determined that her sister is still out there.

As the movie progresses, it is revealed that Enid is more than likely responsible for her sisters death. Either out of fear for getting caught or out of remorse, Enid blocked this memory out of her head and convinced herself that her sister was just lost and more than likely still out there. This is demonstrated when she was convinced on multiple occasions that certain women resembling her could be her. When faced with the truth of what really happened when viewing a film that very accurately depicted what happened to her sister, Enid would become physically ill, most likely because she was being confronted with reality. At the end of the film, Enid becomes so dissociated from reality that she distorts reality and imagines her family having a happy ending after bringing them someone who heavily resembled her sister.

We learn later in the film that the reason for Enid's tolerance of violence is most likely due to her psychotic nature. Enid kills multiple characters throughout the film without showing any form of remorse. This is first seen when she calmly left the home of a producer that she went to talk to after watching him chock to death. This is also seen when she followed a terrified woman while covered in blood after murdering a film director, showing no concern for what she had done and continuously trying to convince an actress that she was her sister.

Biography[]

Enid protests, telling them that there is still a chance that her sister is out there.

The next day, Enid goes back to her job and is questioned by a fellow employee about why she is so good at watching all of the violent scenery. Enid is also interrogated by her boss after a husband-turned-murderer ripped his wife's face off. he censorship team was being blamed by the public this occurring as a film depicting exactly this horrific act it was allowed by the team to be shown in theaters. Later at home, she is berated by phone calls blaming her for what happened, which causes her to have a flashback to the day of her sister's disappearance.

The next day, Enid is again berated, this time by journalists on her way into the office. After making it into the office, she meets a producer named Doug Smart who wants the team to review a film called "Don't Go Into The Church". While watching this film, Enid becomes uncomfortable, going into the bathroom to vomit after seeing one of the sister characters killing the other sister character. Her coworker Perkins checks in on her, and she asks him about the aforementioned serial killer whom was dubbed the "Amnesia Killer", whom didn't remember his killing. Perkins remarks that sometimes the brain censors unpleasant thoughts and memories because it can't handle the truth. Enid has a call with her mom that night regarding the bad press, and falls asleep reading an old diary. She dreams about being in the movie she had just seen previously. The dream ends with a vision of her mother screaming at Enid, saying that "IT"S ALL YOUR FAULT".

She tries to locate the film's archives but is unsuccessful, being told it would take a while. While walking out on the street she notices a poster with a man that looked similar to the man that appeared in the movie. At work, she walks in on her coworkers having a viewing, and passes them on her way down to the archives. She grabs a folder, but is stopped by another coworker who tries to grab it back. Enid yanks it back in her direction and assures her that everything is fine. Enid makes her way through reporters outside and drives to another location, this being a movie set. Here, she meets the actress who looked like her lost sister. The actress, assuming that Enid was another actor, had Enid come inside and got her ready for shooting. Someone tells them to hurry up, and so Enid is led into the woods where the movie is being shot. The actress douses her in fake blood, and Enid walks into the forrest nervously. In the forest, she is met face to face with the director. He tells her that he had been waiting for her and tells her to walk into the light. He tells Enid that she looks guarded, and Enid asks him where he got his inspiration for the Church movie. He tells her that it was inspired by real life, which Enid protests. He insists that evil is real and it is inside of everyone, including her. She denies this, and he commands her to begin taking control of her emotions as she is not portraying the character he wants. She says that she wants her little sister back, which is enough for him, and so be begins to film her.

Enid approaches a cabin similar to the one from her memory, and walks inside. Inside, a muscular man hugs her and tells her that he had been waiting for her for a long time. She breaks their embrace and grabs an axe, causing him to go over to the red-headed actress and grab her by the hair. He tells her that there is something rotten inside of her. She goes at him with the axe as he screams at her, telling her that she is breaking script. He falls back and she continues to go at him with the axe, hallucination a mouth inside of his open wound. Fredrick shows up, and after he does Enid decapitates him with her axe. The other female actress runs away in horror as Enid pursues. Enid insists that the girl is her sister, which the girl adamantly denies.
