Dr. Evelyn Rhyme, better known as Enigma, is one of the overarching antagonists (alongside Circe Sionis) of Season 2 of the 2019 TV series Batwoman.
She's a hypnotist who brainwashed Beth Kane and Ocean into forgetting each other, and later brainwashed Kate Kate into believing she's Roman Sionis's daughter.
She is portrayed by Laura Mennell.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Evelyn grew up in Gotham City and obtained a doctorate from the Paul Revere University, specializing in the brain's reaction to addictive substances, which inspired her to become a hypnotist called "Enigma".
At some point, she started working for Safiyah Sohail on the island of Coryana. When Safiyah's brother Ocean and his new girlfriend Beth Kane were caught stealing the Desert Rose, Safiyah had Enigma erase their memories of each other, in the process rewriting Beth's identity as the notorious criminal Alice, who would later terrorize Gotham City with the Wonderland Gang.
Working for Roman Sinonis[]
In spring 2021, Enigma was hired by Roman Sionis/Black Mask to alter the mind of a captured Kate Kane, whose face was severly disfigured. Evelyn spent weeks injecting Kate with sedatives and using a combination of hypnotism and drugs to make her believe she's Circe Sionis, Black Mask's daughter who died during a breakout in Arkham, even training Kate's voice to sound like Circe's. When Julia Pennyworth started investigating Kate's disappearance, Evelyn wiped her memories to prevent her from finding out the truth.
In the meantime, Evelyn went undercover with The Crows and helped Jacob Kane after he was dosed with Snakebite. Later, Julia went into Evelyn's office and called her "Enigma", uncovering her as the hypnotist who stole her memories. She slammed Evelyn against the door demanding an explanation for her lost memories, but Evelyn injects her with a sedative hidden in her cane and erases her memories again, making her forget her search for Kate as well as transferring her to the Crows base in Berlin so that she doesn't expose her work.
Confronted by Alice and Death[]
Enigma is eventually confronted by Alice in her office, who wants Enigma to hypnotize her again so she can forget Kate. Enigma is reluctant since Kate may represent Alice's only morality left, and also because it's difficult to remove Alice's twin sister from her memory since they were together since birth. Suddenly, Ocean shows up and just as the two start fighting, Enigma paralyzes both of them with a trigger phrase and restores their lost memories of their time in Coryana.
A week later, Evelyn is hung by her ceiling by Alice, who just found out that the new "Circe" is a brainwashed Kate. Evelyn reveals that there's a keepsake to restore Kate's memories, but is killed by Ocean before she can reveal what it is.
