~ Matsushita about the final players in his game (in the manga). |
Enji Matsushita (known as the Jack of Hearts) is a major antagonist in the Netflix series Alice in Borderland, based on the manga of the same name. He is a game master that appears in the Second Stage and runs the Jack of Hearts game.
He was portrayed by Kai Inowaki. In the English dub, he was voiced by Oliver Price.
Personality[]
Enji Matsushita is a sadistic, egotistic and arrogant liar who loves controlling people. In the manga, he is also a hypnotherapist who is obsessed with using hypnosis and stayed in the Borderlands to manipulate others whenever he wants. According to Sunato Banda, Matsushita's narcissistic behavior and pleasure in witnessing other's misery is rooted in shame about his own darkness and jealousy of others' happiness.
He is very intelligent. In the manga, he shows to have deep knowledge of human psychology and correctly deduces from the beginning the players who are adept at manipulating others, and among them, he correctly predicts that Sunato Banda and Oki Yaba and whoever teams up with them are going to be the ones standing in the final round (Chishiya isn't in this game in the manga). So, he brainwashes Yaba's partner, Kotoko Shiga, into helping him get rid of Yaba while he teams up with Banda to secure his own spot in the final round, before trying to get rid of Banda himself. In the TV series, he likely deduced something similar and that is why he teams up with Banda while manipulating Kotoko in secret, communicating with her through colored biscuits in the cafeteria. Matsushita is also a big cheater in the manga. Besides using his hypnosis on Kotoko, he has a prosthetic eye which he uses to confirm his own card suit, so he never dies even if players lie to him.
He is shown to be a coward. He prefers to watch the conflicts from the sidelines and doesn't like to risk his own life. He doesn't get directly involved with most of the killings in the Jack of Hearts game despite being the one who created it. In the manga, he even admits that his enjoyment is watching the players kill each other while he is in total safety. When he is discovered by Banda and Yaba, he becomes horrified and kills himself soon after to avoid further torture.
In the end, Matsushita's ego is his downfall as he thinks that the players in his game are never going to outsmart him and is certain he has the absolute control over them, but he doesn't predict Banda and Yaba teaming up to beat him.
Biography[]
Matsushita first appears during the Jack of Hearts game. He intends to have all 19 players killed and win the game by having them turn on each other and lie about the card suits on the back of their explosive collars, as they try to figure out who is the Jack of Hearts among them.
At beginning of the game, Matsushita meets Sunato Banda, a famous killer in the real world, and teams up with him so they can tell each other their suits and survive together. However, unknown to all players, Matsushita had also made a deal with another player, Kotoko Shiga. Kotoko had teamed up with Oki Yaba, a con man. With this, every round Matsushita and Banda tell each other their suits, but Matsushita and Kotoko also tell each other their suits in secret. At the end of each round, Matsushita goes to his Solitary Confinement to guess his suit and manages to repeatedly get it right and move on to the next round.
Matsushita and Banda manage to get through all of the rounds together until most of the players die due to lying and deceiving each other. This results in only 5 people left: Matsushita, Banda, Shuntarō Chishiya, Yaba, and Kotoko. Because Chishiya lost his partner in the previous round, he approaches Matsushita to ask about his suit, so Matsushita lies to him. Later, he tells Banda that Chishiya is the Jack of Hearts.
Before entering the Solitary Confinement again, Matsushita tells Kotoko to kill Yaba by telling him the wrong suit and makes sure she will die next too by lying about her suit. Then, Matsushita betrays Banda as well, to kill him and win the game. After guessing his suit correctly again, Matsushita gets out his jail cell and sees no one, so he thinks he won the game. However, to his surprise, Chishiya, Banda and Yaba get out their cells too. The only person who died was Kotoko, as she believed in Matsushita over Yaba, who had told her the correct suit.
Matsushita is speechless, but Chishiya reveals he had figured out that Matsushita was the Jack from the start and also noticed that Matsushita was working with Kotoko after noticing them communicating through colored biscuits in the cafeteria. Banda was suspious of Matsushita too because he is a well-known murder in the real world, so normal people wouldn't team up with him. Banda and Yaba reveal that they also had worked together in the previous round after meeting and talking in the bathroom. Banda and Yaba bonded and developed a trust in each other in their short talk, due to sharing the same view of the Borderlands, recognizing each other as equals. They also told each other their suits there, so neither of them died when Kotoko and Matsushita lied to them.
Banda and Yaba then drag Matsushita to a cell to torture him and get answers about the Borderlands. Banda pulls out a coupleof knifes to torture Matsushita, making him horrified. At the end of the round, they tell Matsushita the correct suit, so that he survives and the interrogation continues. But Matsushita can't handle their torture and purposely says the incorrect suit, dying off-screen.
