~ Maxwell to the citizens of London. |
Enrico Maxwell (in Japanese: エンリコ・マクスウェル, Enriko Makusuweru) is the secondary antagonist of the anime/manga series Hellsing, as well as a supporting protagonist in the manga spin-off Crossfire. He is the fanatical leader of the Iscariot Organization who seeks to exterminate all "unholy" creatures and heretics on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church. He's one of the primary rivals to the Hellsing Organization next to The Major.
After securing the loyalty of the Papal Knights, Maxwell leads an attack on London to exterminate all non-Catholics, believing them to be "heretics".
In the original Japanese version, he was voiced by Hideyuki Tanaka in the anime series, Shō Hayami in the OVA and Risa Hayamizu as a child. In the English dubbed version, he was voiced by JB Blanc as an adult and Yuri Lowenthal as a child.
Appearance[]
In the manga, Maxwell has blond hair and blue eyes. In the anime (both the TV and OVA series), he has silver hair and purple eyes. His main attire is a purple priest coat with white sleeves and gloves. He also has a pony tail and later on has a red and gold archbishop sash.
Synopsis[]
Background[]
Enrico Maxwell was born a bastard child that was abandoned by a church in Italy. He was sent to an orphanage run by Father Alexander Anderson, where he grew up alongside Heinkel Wolfe and Yumie Takagi. Despite the compansionship of his fellow orphans and mentoring from Anderson, Maxwell always felt alone; part of this was due to being abandoned by his parents, as well as fearing the supposed stigma of being a bastard. An inability to feel like he belonged left a hole in his heart.
The orphans were raised with a strong belief in Catholic dogma, education including history and politics, and taught to despise anyone in a faith deemed to be heretical. While the main purpose was to spread the Catholic faith, Maxwell became obsessed with the aspect of erasing so-called heathens; perhaps from being born a bastard, the lowest social standing, yet heathens meant that he was "superior" to many more people, and by removing them he would in some way prove himself.
Maxwell would eventually compensate for his loneliness and lack of connection with a hunger for power, thus over the years, he would climb the ranks of the Vatican until reaching closer to supreme religious power, only beneath God Himself.
Hellsing Ultimate[]
Enrico Maxwell, as head of the Iscariot Organisation, Branch Matthew XIII, under the Vatican, is made aware of the near-fatal encounter between his underling, Alexander Anderson, and leader of Great Britain's vampire extermination order Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing.
Following the attack by the Valentine brothers and their army of ghouls on Hellsing Manor, which of the organisation caused the deaths of all but Integra, her butler Walter C. Dronez, vampires Alucard, and Seras Victoria, Maxwell invited Integra to the British Art Museum to ease tensions. Integra expressed disdain about how in Ireland, Anderson killed two of her men and almost her, but Maxwell lost his composure due to disliking a Protestant talking down to him. However, the almost public battle between their respective dragons, Alucard and Anderson - which was defused by Seras Victoria bringing a tour group of Japanese visitors - made Maxwell understand the need for calm. Maxwell invited Integra to a private conversation to discuss Jan Valentine's dying clue of his masters, Millennium, which was discovered to be a supernatural research division and battalion approved by Adolf Hitler. Maxwell revealed that Millennium escaped the fall of Nazi Germany due to collaborators in the Vatican, who shepherded the group to Brazil 50 years ago; he, however, offered an allegiance with Hellsing to deal with the mutual threat.
The Hellsing investigation in Rio led to a slaughter of SWAT officers by Alucard, as they had been sent as unknowing pawns by their Millennium-allied superiors. Due to the public display of gore, and Alucard's fight with Tubalcain Alhambra, Alucard, Seras, and Wild Geese Captain Pip Bernadotte were unable to depart the country; however, Maxwell gave approval for Anderson to provide the Hellsing trio a private charter on a Vatican plane.
Maxwell interrogates one of the cardinals that allowed Millennium to flee, then has him executed for his collaboration. Maxwell was invited to attend a meeting of the Round, which was also attended to by the Queen of England. The meeting was disrupted by the inexplicable arrival of Millennium Warrant Officer Schrödinger, whom brought a portable television for the Nazi group's leader, the Major, to communicate with his enemies. After the Major revealed his goal was to launch a massive war without end, as he wished to battle Alucard once again, Maxwell derided the Major as a madman; although, the Major gleefully noted that if Maxwell's God appeared to allow his madness, then God was as insane as the Major.
Maxwell sent Anderson and a squad of Iscariot agents into London to bide time for his next move. As Alucard was lured to an aircraft carrier, the Eagle, by Rip Van Winkle and her small squad, and Seras and the Wild Geese mercenaries were at Hellsing Manor, Millennium commenced its invasion of London. Millennium bombed numerous London landmarks, and unleashed its forces of hundreds Nazi Vampires - artificially converted from once human Wehrmacht troopers by the Doctor - to massacre the people of the city.
Despite ordering Iscariot agents to take Integra into custody, her strong will bent them into merely escorting her as she attempted to walk back to the Manor to regroup.
The Pope in absentia promoted Maxwell to Archbishop and gave him command of four orders of Catholic knights numbering approximately 3,000; Maxwell declared the beginning of the Ninth Crusade, to kill the Anglican and other "heathen" populace of England to reclaim the kingdom for the Vatican, thus betraying the alliance he made with Integra Hellsing.
The Ninth Crusade arrive in London's airspace with dozens of attack helicopters and troop aircraft; Maxwell was within a box of reinforced glass on a truck, carried by cables attached below a tandem-rotor helicopter. The glass case was fixed with several microphones, broadcasting Maxwell's rants of the Vatican arriving to exterminate the Nazi Vampires and English citizenry alike. On the ground, Integra is enraged as the Catholic aircraft bombed an already burning city, while Anderson noted about how betrayals were common in war, and could be considered admirable; however, Anderson continued to counter his point by disagreeing with Maxwell, due to him mindlessly slaughtering everyone regardless of their faith, and doing it not for God, but for his own ego and delusions of grandeur.
Due to becoming a true vampire, Seras arrived to protect Integra from the Iscariot agents, as they gradually shifted away from Anderson's orders to not join Maxwell's madness. Their debate is interrupted as Alucard had ferried the Eagle into the Thames, thus could propel himself to the centre of the battlefield, whereupon Millennium vampires and the Ninth Crusade were at a brief impasse. Integra commanded Alucard to release his Control Art Restrictions Zero, which unleashed his whole power, as the hundreds of thousands of souls he had consumed manifested as familiars. Maxwell becomes distressed and absolutely horrified, as he is confronted by the depths of Alucard's powers; Maxwell condemns Alucard for consuming so many people, even his fellow Wallachians.
The aircraft carrying Maxwell's glass case was shot down, crashing into the city. While suffering minor injuries, Maxwell was otherwise unharmed. He is scared upon seeing the familiars claw at the glass, but upon seeing they couldn't breach it, he gloated about the construction of the glass to reassure himself of his safety. However, a disappointed Anderson threw a bayonet into the glass, causing it to shatter. The familiars drag Maxwell into their clutches, while he pleads and begs for Anderson to save him.
Maxwell mentally reverts to a child, as he addressed Anderson as "teacher" as he did when first at the orphanage; multiple spears impale through Maxwell, along with many of his soldiers. Maxwell lamented about how didn't want to die, but especially not die alone, since he had been born alone. The penetrations prove fatal as he bled to death.
Anderson momentarily cradled Maxwell's dead body over his lap, to mournfully chide him for his folly, although, Anderson then announced to the surviving members of Iscariot in London to disregard Maxwell as a hapless fool and a coward, not worth contemplating further.
Maxwell's sash is one of the characteristic props or attire of the pivotal players in the Major's war.
At some point, Makube was given command of the Iscariot Organisation, with the defeat of the Ninth Crusade being so devastating to the Vatican, that Makube noted that they would likely need to wait another one or two centuries before attempting the Tenth.
Personality[]
Maxwell is a deep religious fanatic which suits him well as the leader of the Vatican's Iscariot Organization. He's obsessed with power as he controls his subordinates with an iron fist and takes great pleasure in watching violence unfold between Hellsing and Millennium. His motivations are based on pure desire for power which makes his underling Alexander Anderson question him, who says that Maxwell turned his back on God. Being the head of the Iscariot Organization, Maxwell seeks to cleanse the world of "unholy" beings like vampires and also wants to cleanse both England and Europe of heretics such as Protestants as shown when he was in London gunning down the remaining civilians because they were mostly Protestant Christians; however, there would still be Catholics living in London, but he ordered every Londoner dead indiscriminately, reinforcing how his motivation wasn't "cleansing heathens," as he claimed, but purely to satisfy his bloodlust and sense of power.
As a child, he was deeply insecure about being a bastard, and became obsessed with avoiding the label by climbing the ranks of power, while displaying a confident exterior. However, despite his seemingly prideful and strong outward appearance, he is actually in fact a weak, spineless coward, with childlike motivations and ideals, something that is noted by Alexander Anderson, and the primary reason why the Bayonet Priest betrayed him.

Trivia[]
- Like most of the Hellsing cast, Enrico came from Hentai mangas that Hirano originally work on. Maxwell's prototype came from a hentai manga called Crossfire but Hirano changed the prototype when including it in the Hellsing series because he felt that the prototype looked too much like Integra.
- Furthermore, it's possible they change Maxwell's eye and hair color in the anime just to differentiate him from Integra.
- Maxwell was a bastard, abandoned to the Catholic church; like Yumie and Heinkel, he was raised (at least occasionally) by Alexander Anderson.
