~ Gortash's proposal to the adventurers. |
Lord Enver Gortash is one of the three main antagonists (alongside the Absolute and Raphael) of the 2023 fantasy video game Baldur's Gate III.
He is a former smuggler turned aristocrat in the city of Baldur's Gate, who secretly acts as the Chosen of the Dark God Bane and one of the leaders of the Cult of the Absolute. Alongside the Dark Urge, Gortash schemed to take over the entirety of Faerun by enslaving an elder brain they dubbed the Absolute, controlling an army of brainwashed True Souls. While his accomplices Ketheric Thorm and Orin the Red sowed chaos in Faerun, Gortash would present himself as a heroic savior in order to accomplish his ambitious goal.
He is also the former boss-turned-archenemy of Karlach Cliffgate, whom he gave to the Archdevil Zariel, forcing her to become a champion of Avernus and giving her an infernal engine, which will kill her if she doesn't remain in Avernus.
He was voiced by Jason Isaacs, who also played Lucius Malfoy and the Basilisk in the Harry Potter film franchise, Captain James Hook in the 2003 Peter Pan film, Zhao in Avatar: The Last Airbender, Satan in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, The Grand Inquisitor in Star Wars Rebels, the titular character in Superman: Red Son, Dick Dastardly in Scoob!, and Brainiac in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.
Biography[]
Gortash was born to a cobbler couple, Dravo and Sally Flymm. As a child, he was sold by his parents to a warlock to pay off their massive debts. However, the warlock was actually the cambion Raphael, who abused him. Sometime later, Gortash escaped Raphael. He began a career as a black market weapons dealer.
Gortash hired Karlach to be his bodyguard and the two were stated to be good friends, but he later betrayed her and sold her to the archdevil Zariel.
At some point, Gortash became a "Chosen" of Bane. This encouraged him to increase prestige to become one of the elites of Baldur's Gate. Around this time, he also met Orin the Red and Ketheric Thorm and created the Cult of the Absolute with them.
After taking control of the Elder Brain, Gortash proceeds to have Duke Ravengard infected with an Illithid parasite before leaving to Baldur's Gate where the possessed Duke then coronates him as Archduke. Gortash proceeds to mass-produce an army of metallic soldiers titled the Steel Watch, ordered to protect the City and imprison - if not kill - anyone who threatened his plans.
When the player and their party arrive at Baldur's Gate, Gortash offers to form an alliance with them in exchange for Orin's Netherstone as he sees Orin as a loose thread due to her bloodlust and the murderous tendices of the Cult of Bhaal.
If the alliance if formed Gortash will join in the efforts of fighting the Absolute with his army, When the player manages to briefly subdue it, Gortash attempts to regain control the Absolute to continue his plans only to be overwhelmed by it's psychic power causing his head to implode from the inside.
When the players refuses, Gortash states that they will want to reconsider. After dismantling the steel watch foundry and rescuing political captives, the party (specifically Karlach) confront Grotash at his fort for his Netherstone in which his is killed as a result.
In either case due to being Bane's chosen, Gortash's soul is forfeited to him after his death.
Appearance[]
Gortash is a human man with scruffy black hair, a stubble, and slightly tan skin. His outfit consists of a fine black and gold suit with a high collar and his chest partially revealed alongside jackboots and a gauntlet that covers his right hand.
Personality[]
Enver Gortash is a rather complex character. Gortash presents himself as a true nobleman despite his origins, speaking with calm confidence and wearing fine clothes. He can be acourteous, well-mannered and polite gentleman.
Beneath is manners, Enver Gortash is a cunning, devious, ruthless, manipulative, and ambitious tyrant who would do anything to achieve his ambitions and will cross any length to achieve that. His ultimate goal is to ascend to the position of Archduke of Baldur's Gate, taking control of the city once and for all. His ambition is proven by his past deeds: selling Karlach to Zariel and creating the Steel Watch to have an army gripping Baldur's Gate. Though he craves power and control, he is less violent and more pragmatic than characters like Orin, and would rather achieve his ends through manipulation. He is even willing to ally with the main characters, though he only does it to further his own ends.
Trivia[]
- Fans of the Baldur's Gate franchise have speculated that Gortash represents the Artificer class from Dungeons & Dragons, as he has similar abilities to an Artificer when fought.
