I envy that ignorance. Bliss, is it not? You know what else I Envy...? Your power. And thanks to our mutual benefactors... that power is MINE. Pride had it right -- the Charred Council set you up! They want us all dead! All Seven Sins and the Horsemen!
~ Envy to Fury after defeating and capturing Pride.
When I'm done here and the Charred Council are nothing left but pebbles, I will simply wait out the Apocalypse and destroy whatever weakened generals remain! The Earth will be mine!
~ Envy boasting to the Charred Council.

Envy, also known as The Covetous Queen, is the main antagonist of the 2018 video game Darksiders III.

She is a member of the Seven Deadly Sins who were imprisoned by the Four Horsemen many centuries before the apocalypse. However, upon War's premature onset and the ensuing destruction of humanity, Envy, along with the rest of the Seven Deadly Sins, were released by the council so they could destroy the Earth and threaten the balance. Seeking what she believes is owed, Envy disguised herself as the Charred Council's Watcher to deceive the Horseman Fury into capturing her siblings to obtain their power.

She was voiced by Fryda Wolff, who has also voiced Emperor Belos as a child, The Collector and The Grand Huntsman in The Owl House, the Enchantress in Avengers Assemble, Poison Ivy in DC Super Friends, the Matriarch from Killing Floor, and Faora from Justice League Action. False Envy was voiced by Misty Lee, who also voiced Darlene Fleischermacher in Dead Rising 3, the Ninth Sister in the Star Wars series, Ursula in Fire Emblem, Kalista in League of Legends and The Sorceress in the Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

Biography[]

Background[]

Envy an the Seven Deadly Sins were supposedly made by the Creator's grand design, which often subjected to controversy within Darksiders world. She became the embodiment of jealousy and resentment, which she directed toward her siblings since she's considered the weakest of the sins. Envy's lack of strength is further commented on by her sister Lust, who tells Fury that Envy has no combat experience. Despite the Seven Deadly SIns being titled as a divine beings, the Charred Council sent the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse to imprison them. Following their defeat, Envy became jealousy of Death, War and Strife's powers, desiring one day to have their powers alongside her siblings.

Darksiders III[]

Once the Charred Council allowed the apocalypse to start prematurely, they released the Seven Deadly Sins and tasked Fury to capture them in hopes that both sides would destroy each other. However, Envy disguised herself as a watcher while her siblings traveled to Earth and claimed parts of a ruined city. Once summoned by the council to become Fury's companion, Envy directed the horseman to the false Envy to defeat the bird-creature. Upon defeating the false Envy, Fury obtained the talisman of sin off the former and used to capture her essence. The real Envy continued to accompany Fury on her quest in capturing her siblings, often commenting on her admiration for mankind's work or attempting to flatter the horseman.

During the journey, Envy's deception is noticed by a few characters, notably the sin Lust and the demon Abraxis when they're confronted by Fury. The deadly sin's attitude towards Fury also slowly changes, becoming critical of Fury's honor as she starts to change her ways. Upon Pride's defeat, Envy reveals herself when capturing her sister with the talisman, transforming into a new form stolen from War, Death and Strife. She then kicks Fury out of Pride's chamber and travels to the Charred Council's location, where she proceeds to attack them. However, Fury returns after using a portal crafted by Ultahne, defeats Envy in combat and captures her essence in the talisman.

Upon her defeat, Fury is attacked by the Charred Council for defying them and can potentially use the mysterious sigil from the Lords of Hollows against them. The horseman then uses the talisman as a detonation against the council, leaving it unknown if Envy and her siblings' essence survived in the process.

Personality[]

I hope it's not Envy. That one's a terror.
~ The Watcher to Fury when searching for the false Envy.

Similar to her siblings, Envy desires power above all else, but is accurately defined by her jealousy for what she doesn't have. Her jealousy eventually turned into resentment, holding her siblings in contempt for their great power and being titled the weakest of the seven. Self-aware of her lack of abilities, Envy relied on her intelligence, cunningness and knowledge to deceive and manipulate others that underestimated her. This is shown on several occasions as the Watcher, as she as able to deceive Fury by appearing as a loyal servant to the Council and flattering the horseman during her journey. Another notable trait of Envy's was cowardice, preferring to remain in the shadows to plot instead of facing conflict head-on.

Once obtaining the power of the Seven Deadly Sins, Envy showed herself to be proud, overconfident, power-hungry and temperamental to an unhinged degree. She boasts of her achievement when capturing Pride and kicking Fury out of her sister's chamber, and spouts arrogant vitrail towards the Charred Council. Envy also relishes in the idea of becoming Earth's ruler, noting that she will simply wait for Heaven and Hell's generals to be weakened so she could take over the planet. Her lust for power and overconfidence proved to be her downfall, as she was defeated by the underestimated horseman in their final battle.

Quotes[]

Trivia[]

  • In theology, envy is the fourth Deadly Sin and is often associated with green colour. Additionally, in Othello, Iago call envy "green-eyed monster". Envy from Darksiders has both features.
  • Envy is the first female boss in the Darksiders series.
  • Envy's mask is similar to Death's in early projects.
  • There are several clues that foreshadow the Watcher's identity:
    • Anytime the Watcher speaks or manifests next to Fury, the talisman of sins glows green, which only does so when one of the Seven Deadly Sins is nearby.
    • The color of the energy capturing the false Envy is white while the energy is green when capturing the other sins.
    • The Watcher's comments towards Fury slowly change as she captures more sins. She initially appears flattering toward the horseman to earn her good graces, but becomes more critical and antagonistic towards Fury when she shows mercy or goes off course (e.g. defeating the twister in the Scar).
    • Most Deadly Sins and the demon Abraxis hint at Envy's ruse, either knowing that the Watcher is Envy or simply acknowledging her deception.
