Lorenzo "Enzo" St. John was a major antagonist in The Vampire Diaries. He is a young vampire who was subjected to experimental testing by a research organization/hunters in order to find new advances in medicine and science, after escaping from so much outrage he returned after 150 years to take revenge on Damon Salvatore for having betrayed him.
He was portrayed by Michael Malarkey, who also portrayed Seamus O'Meara in Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Early Life[]
Lorenzo was orphaned as a child and forced to work in workhouses, eventually living on the streets. He was turned into a vampire by Lily Salvatore after being denied passage to New York due to consumption. He was imprisoned and experimented on by the Augustine Society, where he developed feelings for Maggie James, who he compelled to forget him to protect her. He befriended Damon Salvatore while imprisoned but was left behind by him during a fire.
Season 5[]
Enzo, a vampire, is believed to have killed Megan King but it was covered up as a suicide. He later resurfaces and reveals he survived due to a scientist's help. Enzo becomes an antagonist to Damon and Stefan, and kills one of their enemies. However, Stefan believes Enzo is a bad influence on Damon and asks him to leave. Enzo helps Damon try to find and kill Dr. Wes Maxfield but they fall into a trap.
Enzo and Damon are ambushed by travelers, and Damon ends up becoming an Augustine vampire. Enzo chains him up to keep him from feeding on him, but Wes shoots Damon to test his limits. Enzo is horrified as Damon feeds on him, but the travelers eventually let him go. Enzo and Caroline meet and work together to find a cure for the vampire-feeding virus. They also work to find a doppelgänger to kill, which will give them the blood they need for the cure. Caroline and Enzo part ways when Caroline volunteers to help Enzo kill the doppelgänger, and Stefan is hesitant to let her go. In "Rescue Me," Enzo and Caroline work together to find the doppelgänger's whereabouts.
Caroline, Enzo, Damon, and Elena are dealing with the aftermath of Silas' death and the appearance of his doppelgänger, Tom. Caroline tries to save Tom, but Enzo kills him, leading to an argument between him and Caroline. Later, Enzo and Damon play pool and discuss their respective relationships with Elena. Caroline and Elena visit the Salvatore house, where Enzo invites Caroline to listen in on Damon and Elena's conversation. Enzo shares with Caroline his search for Maggie, a woman he's been seeking since being captured by the Travelers. Enzo later talks with Damon on the phone and meets up with Bonnie, Elena, and Stefan at a restaurant, where he accuses Stefan of killing Maggie.
Caroline and Stefan discuss Enzo's death, but Damon interrupts them with news that Elena told him the truth. Enzo's ghost appears and Caroline thinks he's trying to scare them, but Damon realizes Enzo was trying to distract them. Enzo attacks Stefan and Damon, but Damon convinces him to let him find a way to resurrect him. Enzo spends time with Bonnie on the other side and is eventually resurrected when Bonnie finds a way to do it.
Season 6[]
Enzo is kissing a witch in an attempt to bring Damon back to life but is interrupted by Caroline. Enzo takes Caroline on a road trip to Stefan's home where they have dinner with Stefan and Ivy. Enzo stabs Stefan with a fork and then stabs him in the neck, causing Stefan to kill him. Caroline is upset with Stefan for killing Enzo and cries in the car. Later, Enzo is attacked by Stefan and a vampire hunter, and Stefan kills Enzo with a stake.
He is shown to be captured, interrogated, and threatened by Tripp and Matt, who want him to reveal the names of vampires. Enzo later turns on Tripp and helps Damon and Alaric escape, but kills Tripp later. Enzo also kills Sarah, a woman who impersonated the real Sarah Salvatore. In one episode, Enzo is captured by Matt and Jeremy, who plan to kill him by crossing the Mystic Falls border, but Enzo survives due to Kai's actions.
In "The Day I Tried to Live," Enzo threatens Matt into helping him with tasks and reveals his plan to turn Sarah into a vampire. In "Stay," Enzo confronts Jeremy and convinces Matt to bring Sarah to him, ultimately revealing to Sarah that he is a vampire. In "The Downward Spiral," Enzo and Caroline attend a rave, but Caroline steals his phone. In "A Bird in a Gilded Cage," Enzo enlists Ric's help to get revenge on Stefan and Caroline, but ultimately abandons his plan. In "I Never Could Love Like That," Enzo takes Sarah to meet Stefan and Damon, but is betrayed by Lily, who turned him into a vampire in 1903. In "Because," Enzo reunites with Lily and discovers that she is a vampire who has been killing people.
In "I'd Leave My Happy Home For You," Enzo attends Alaric's bachelor party and asks Stefan for help with Lily. He later tells Damon he doesn't want to take the cure and helps Stefan with Lily. In "I'll Wed You in the Golden Summertime," Enzo visits Lily and gives her an iPod with old songs. Later, he accompanies her to a warehouse but they find the wrong address. In "I'm Thinking Of You All The While," Enzo tells Stefan and Caroline about Kai and waits in the car while Stefan talks to Lily. After Kai dies, Lily finds "her family" with Enzo's help.
Season 7[]
He interacts with Lily and her "family" of magic siphoners. In one episode, Enzo kidnaps Caroline on Lily's orders, but Caroline manages to escape and injure Enzo. Enzo later confronts Lily about his place in the family and reveals that he chose her, not the family. In another episode, Enzo accuses Valerie of murder and eventually learns about Julian, Lily's ex-lover who is a dangerous monster. He tries to figure out how to prevent Julian from returning to Lily's life.
In the episode "Live Through This," he helps "Oscar" and Bonnie, and discovers a stone that holds Julian's soul. In "Best Served Cold," he attends a party with Bonnie and has feelings for Lily, but leaves after feeling overwhelmed. In "Mommie Dearest," he and Bonnie search for Oscar's car and find a shortsword with an "X" on it. He later fights with Julian in a cemetery and loses the longsword, but manages to wound Julian with a cut on the neck.
He is seen watching Rayna's body burst into flames and smoke. Later on, Enzo and another Armory member watch as Rayna punches the glass, and Enzo tells the individual that they need to sedate her. When Rayna breaks the glass and brings Enzo to the floor, he calls Damon as Bonnie isn't taking his calls and he wanted to ask about Rayna's sword. He threatens and mocks Damon about killing Elena and tells him to bring the sword to Whitmore or he'll tell Bonnie the truth. Enzo is tied up by Rayna, but when Damon comes back from fighting her, Enzo reveals that Elena is alive. In another episode, Enzo greets Damon and Bonnie at the entrance of the Armory and tells them about his family. When they try to leave, Enzo shoots Damon with a vervain dart and hits Bonnie on the head with the butt of the gun. Later, Bonnie hits Enzo with a vase and cuts off his right hand. In another episode, Enzo is seen in the backseat of Detective Martel's car, vamping to Matt and putting him in a choke hold.
In Huntsville, Alabama, Enzo and Bonnie show their love for each other while Damon receives a message from Rayna. Inside the restaurant they find three dead vampires and Enzo kills Beau, who was possessing one of the bodies. Enzo and Damon argue over their choices while in the hideout. After Enzo is attacked by Damon for endangering Bonnie, she arrives and they part ways with her so she can talk to Damon. Later, Enzo plays the guitar and jokes with Bonnie at the hideout. In Kill 'Em All, Enzo and Damon go to Delaware to kill vampires on Rayna's list. When they find out that Bonnie has been poisoned, Enzo is angry and leaves, but Damon persuades him to go be with Bonnie. After a fight over the deal Damon made to save Bonnie, Enzo and Damon get into an argument. Enzo worries about Bonnie when she doesn't wake up and enters her dream to convince her to live. In Requiem for a Dream, Enzo talks to Stefan about how Rayna forgave him. He then walks into Bonnie's dream and she stabs him with a broken guitar. In Gods and Monsters, Enzo talks to Virginia and Damon about the monster in the vault. After Bonnie stabs him, Enzo tells her that he loves her and asks her not to remember that moment, but the good ones. After Damon destroys the last immortality, Enzo is forgiven and kisses Bonnie.
Season 8[]
In "Hello, Brother" Enzo and Damon are waiting for more victims. Enzo is beaten and begins to put his bones in his place while Damon talks to a couple. Enzo and Damon then arrive at a warehouse and ask the couple who is worse to feed the monster there. Enzo kills Cindy and tells Damon that he will take care of her body while he takes care of Buck. Enzo then meets Damon again while Buck is being eaten by the monster, and they leave. In "Today Will Be Different", Enzo is trying to resist Sybil's influence and helps Bonnie and the others protect themselves from her. In "You Decided That I Was Worth Saving", Sybil asks Enzo to turn off her humanity, but he refuses and helps protect Bonnie from Damon, though he ultimately turns off her humanity to save everyone.
In The Simple Intimacy of the Near Touch, Enzo and Bonnie return from their trip to Paris. At the Mystic Falls Founders Foundation, Enzo tells Bonnie to stay away from Sybil and they talk about the vial of blood she wears around her neck. They talk about being together if she becomes a vampire, but Bonnie tells him that she would only take it if they were together forever. In You Made a Choice to Be Good, Enzo and Bonnie drive together and talk about their future plans and the cure for vampirism. Enzo wants to take the cure, but Stefan interrupts his plans. In The Lies Will Catch Up To You, Enzo dies and Bonnie mourns him. In It's Been a Hell of a Ride and We're Planning a June Wedding, Enzo appears in an alternate dimension created by Bonnie and talks to her. In I Was Feeling Epic, Enzo appears as a spirit and comforts Bonnie as she fights hellfire.
Personality[]
Enzo is a charismatic and optimistic person who lived a fulfilling life before being imprisoned by Agustín. Despite the torture from him, he remained hopeful and wanting revenge. When it is revealed that he is still alive and imprisoned, he appears to have lost his sanity due to decades of torture. However, he proves loyal to his friends, especially Damon, and seeks revenge against those who have hurt him. He also shows a penchant for revenge, such as when he helps Damon with the Augustinians and kills Stefan's girlfriend for making Caroline cry and giving up on Damon. Overall, Enzo is a loyal and committed friend who is willing to do anything for those he cares about.
