Eostra's Dogs are minor antagonists in the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series, serving as supporting antagonists in Ghost Hunter. They are a pack of corrupted dogs who serve the Soul Eater named Eostra.
Description[]
The pack consists of seven dogs. These dogs are bigger than any dog or wolf Torak has ever seen. Their differently colored furs are shaggy and clotted with filth. Their eyes are bloodshot and empty of feeling, reflecting their desire to destroy anything that moves. While they are not possessed by demons like the Demon Bear or tokoroths, their bloodlust is similar. Torak finds a hare the dogs have torn apart without eating it. These dogs are tough and stronger than Wolf, but they are also heavier, slightly slower, and unable to leap as far as him.
Biography[]
The dogs were originally owned by the Mountain Clans until Eostra started capturing them before the events of Ghost Hunter. She somehow turned them into vicious minions, possibly with help of the last Fire Opal piece.
The dogs first make themselves known when Torak, Renn and Wolf are being guided to the Gorge of the Hidden People by the Mountain Clans. When Renn is alone at night, she hears the dogs' howls and is chased by one of them. She injures her leg and hides in a gap, but the dog attempts to dig her out. It suddenly stops and runs away when it is called back.
When Torak and Wolf reach the Mountain of Ghosts, they are attacked by several dogs. The two pack-brothers hold their own for a while with the help of Dark who throws rocks at the dogs from a thick fog. Wolf then runs to lure the dogs away from Torak, just like Eostra intended all along. While most of the dogs chase Wolf, their alpha remains behind to keep an eye on Torak who climbs up the mountain. The other dogs' chase of Wolf ends when he leaps over a chasm and the dogs are unable to follow him.
The dogs appear during the final confrontation in the Whispering Cave. They force Torak to climb up a rock where he spirit walks in Eostra, only to be trapped by her will. When Renn and Dark arrive, they use arrows and rocks to kill four dogs. Two of the remaining dogs disappear for a while, while one remains to keep an eye on Torak's body. After his spirit returns to his body, he kills the dog. The two remaining dogs come back after Torak has shattered the Fire Opal, running towards him. Renn and Dark kill one of them with their last projectiles. While Torak struggles against the last dog, Wolf arrives and kills it.
