Ercole DiMeo is the overarching protagonist of the 2021 crime drama The Many Saints of Newark, as well as one of the overarching protagonists of the TV series The Sopranos. He was the first and longtime boss of the official DiMeo crime family.
He is portrayed by David Chase.
Biography[]
Ercole “Eckley” DiMeo was born sometime in either 1923 or 1924. At some point Ercole became a made member of the New Jersey crime family led by Alfano (last name unknown). When Alfano died or stepped down in the 1950s, Ercole took over as the boss, and the family was renamed to the 'DiMeo crime family’. Out of all his capos, DiMeo trusted Johnny Boy the most, to the point that he seemed content with many people thinking Johnny ran North Jersey instead of the aging Ercole.
The Many Saints of Newark[]
At a celebration for young Janice Soprano's confirmation, Ercole is mentioned by Johnny, saying he’ll be all over him when he will hear about the lighter envelope from the Black Saints gang stealing from their numbers operation. Buddha Bonpensiero’s assistant then came over with the telephone and told Johnny that it’s famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio, who’s currently at Ercole’s mansion seething about something.
In 1971, DiMeo attended the funeral of Lino Bonpensiero and entered a room for the repast feast. As he entered the room where the food was served, he complained to Johnny about the other mourners' big appetites. Junior spotted him and joined him with the other mobsters in a room that was sectioned off to the other guests. He is shown consoling Buddha's young son Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero following his father’s death.
In 1995, he was arrested and sentenced to life in a Missouri high security prison. Giacomo "Jackie" Aprile succeeds him, but considers himself merely "acting boss" until his death from stomach cancer in 1998. As the next in line is discussed. Tony states that Ercole would have chosen Ray Curto, but Ray replies that Ercole and Jackie had Tony himself chosen as the successor.
It is unknown what becomes of Ercole by the end of the series' timeline, but if he is alive, he would be 83-84 years old by the shows finale “Made in America”.
Trivia[]
- Although mentioned many times in the series, he is never physically shown during it, only making an appearance in The Many Saints of Newark, where he is played by the show's creator.
