Erdtree Avatars are minor antagonists who appear as non-respawnable bosses in the 2022 Dark Fantasy RPG game Elden Ring. Their Scarlet Rot counterpart are the Putrid Avatars.
Appearance[]
Erdtree Avatars and Putrid Avatars are tall beings whose bodies resemble hollow tree stumps. They wield large staffs as their main weapon.
Personality[]
Erdtree Avatars are devoted creatures who dedicated all their time to protect the Minor Erdtrees following the Shattering of the Elden Ring. Because of their rather overprotective nature, this makes them highly aggressive enemies who would not hesitate to attack anyone who would dare get close enough to the Minor Erdtrees.
Biography[]
The origins of these tree-like humanoid beings are unknown but they emerged in the wake of the shattering of the Elden Ring by Queen Marika the Eternal, in which golden seeds flew from the Erdtree and scattered across the Lands Between, and grew into minor Erdtrees, alongside illusionary and phantom trees, despite the initial belief that golden seeds don't exist, as the Erdtree was once perfect and eternal.
Following their emerging, each of the Erdtree Avatars went to protect each of the Minor Erdtrees individually while one Avatar remained in the royal capital of Leyndell. As two Minor Edtrees had grown in the region of Caelid, the aftermath of the battle of Aeonia, the legendary duel between Malenia and Radahn, the region of Caelid was ravaged by Scarlet Rot.
Two Erdtree Avatars, who were separately guarding two Minor Erdtrees located in Caelid, were infested with the Rot, becoming Putrid Avatars in the process while a third Avatar was presumably infested prior to guarding the Minor Erdtree in the Consecrated Snowfield. A fourth Putrid Avatar, much like the Erdtree Avatar in Caelid is the only one who doesn't protect a Minor Erdtree but rather Miquella's Haligtree as one of its strongest defenses.
