~ Bonner while holding Stabler captive |
Eric's and Meredith's mother Karen was murdered by Clay, her remains disappeared while the children were told Karen left the family. Eric, however, was a witness to the crime and, burying his memories in religious delusions as a consequence of his trauma, saw his mother in sex workers across the region of New York where his small town resided. Eric spent years kidnapping women and girls in prostitution, usually with chloroform, torturing them based on Old Testament Christianity, and then killing them, burying them at a beach near a World War 2 bunker. Eric's job as a church restorer gave him the geographic and historic site knowledge to organize his lair and burial grounds.
When Eric abducted and murdered Rita Lasku, Detective Elliot Stabler involved himself in the investigation, inserting himself into the lives of the locals of Westbrook. Meredith was originally resistant against Stabler's involvement, until Rita and the other women and girls were all found. Christine Olsten and Heidi Morris were narrowly saved from Eric. Clay covered for Eric by killing Noah Cahill as a patsy and firing Meredith from the case. Stabler and Meredith realized Eric was the killer due to his job being how his crimes were executed. Stabler was kidnapped and held captive by Eric, then tied Stabler to a cross to torture him. Meredith arrived and warned she'd shoot him, pleading for Eric to give himself up. Eric refused and rushed Meredith, resulting in her shooting him dead. Clay later killed several more people and then himself to cover up his own crimes.
