Eric LeBlanc is the main protagonist of the 2016 horror video game The Forest and a minor supporting character in its 2023 sequel Sons of The Forest. He's also the main protagonist of the live-action short film adaptation of the same name.
After a plane crash that lands him on an island inhabited by cannibals, he must survive the island and rescue his son Timmy, who's been abducted by one of the cannibals.
He is portrayed by Christopher Mulvin in the 2019 short film.
Biography[]
Background[]
Before the game's events, Eric Leblanc was a famous Canadian survival documentary host and co-author of the Survival Guide with Sam Sounde. He was married and had a son named Timmy. Unfortunately, he became a widower after an unspecified accident resulted in the death of his wife. The game begins with Eric and Timmy returning from a trip to New York.
Plane Crash[]
Following the plane crash, Eric is tossed from his seat onto the aisle. He regains consciousness on the floor and spots a man covered in red paint carrying his son. Eric tries unsuccessfully to reach them before passing out once more. When he wakes up, he collects supplies scattered around the plane, including the Plane Axe lodged in a stewardess, becoming his first weapon in the game. With the primary objective of finding Timmy, he embarks on an exploration journey while also pursuing secondary goals like locating other survivors and constructing a shelter.
Surviving on the Island[]
While in search of Timmy, Eric encounters savage cannibal groups, seemingly from different tribes. He cleverly exploits their tribal differences at times, pitting them against each other for his escape. On other occasions, he engages in life-or-death battles, armed with his trusty plane axe and any crafted or found weapons. Eric stumbles upon an extensive cave system beneath the forest, where he discovers items like drawings and toy parts, indicating Timmy's presence, but always arriving just too late to find him. Eventually, he encounters powerful mutants, more formidable than regular cannibals, but Eric manages to defeat them. Along the way, he uncovers clues pointing to the presence of the Sahara company on the peninsula and acquires a keycard. After navigating to the bottom of a sinkhole, he locates a vault door that the keycard unlocks.
Uncovering Sahara Labs[]
Eric enters the vault, deep beneath the cave system, housing the disarrayed Sahara research lab. Bodies, collapsed walls, and damaged piping suggest an evacuation or massacre. He finds the Resurrection Obelisk in a room, discovering Timmy's lifeless body inside. Grief-stricken, Eric lays Timmy on a nearby bed, adorned with wires connected to the obelisk, and places Timmy's toy by his side. Seeing cords attached to the machine, Eric impulsively connects one to Timmy, prompting the machine to request more specimens. Placing all cords on Timmy, the obelisk reopens. Eric heads out to find a new specimen.
Later, Eric encounters Dr. Mathew Cross, dead with crayons in his neck, mouth, ears, and eyes, realizing the Red Man was a scientist working for Sahara. Dr. Cross sought to resurrect his daughter Megan after a violent attack.
Following bloody footprints and Megan's drawings, Eric reaches the end, discovering test rooms, corpses, and evidence implicating Sahara in creating cannibals and mutants for immortality. He finds a door outside, with a drawing suggesting Megan killed her father. Crossing the threshold, he discovers Megan in a room, surrounded by drawings, playing with a toy plane, her mouth, feet, and hands covered in blood. As Eric approaches, she points at him, seemingly aware of how he arrived on the peninsula. Megan has a seizure and undergoes a monstrous mutation, becoming the Boss Monster, forcing Eric into a life-and-death battle. He defeats her and gently places her body into the Obelisk.
Resurrecting Timmy and Escaping the Island[]
The machine beeps angrily, stating that a live specimen is needed. Megan's lifeless body falls from the obelisk, dropping a new keycard. Eric takes the keycard, following signs to a second artifact. Using it, he accesses an elevator and reaches an observatory in the northern mountain. He finds a desk connected to a second artifact above him in the ceiling. After some thought, he activates the second artifact, causing another plane to crash.
If Eric shoots down the plane, it suggests that he kidnaps a survivor from the crash and uses them to resurrect Timmy. One year later, they both get rescued and appear on a TV show. Eric wrote a book about the crash and his survival. The show's host invites Eric to a wood chopping contest using the Modern Axe. As they compete, Timmy starts seizing violently, resembling Megan's seizures. The screen goes black for about 5 seconds, then returns. Eric rushes to Timmy and holds him. Within about 5 seconds, Timmy's shaking stops, and he opens his eyes, looking at his father. The scene shifts to Timmy in a shower, viewing a wall with information about the peninsula. His arms suddenly bulge and shake as he gazes out a window at a city, likely a struggle since his revival.
Alternate Ending[]
If Eric decides to shut down the artifact, he goes through a different path in the labs, a cave. He looks at the plane he would have crashed otherwise and burns a photo of Timmy. This suggests he's accepting that he may never be rescued from the peninsula and is letting go of his son. After this, the player unlocks mannequins of Timmy and his wife.
