Villain Overview

Erik: "Excuse me - miss? The sun is low. You're surely aware this place isn't safe for a young lady. Much less... children. May I ask what you're doing all the way out beyond the wall so late in the day?"
Hilda's mother: "Maybe you can help, we're looking for... berries to make jam!"
Erik: "Those berries are intensely poisonous ma'am, you must do no such thing!"
Hilda's mother: "Oh! Ha! I know that, obviously! I didn't mean these berries. What are... what are you doing out here?"
Erik: "Did you know there are more of these things out here each night than there have been in either of our live-times? Isn't that a terrifying thought? No one's quite sure why. I'm just doing my little bit to keep Trolberg safe. The creatures of the mountain begin to stir. And so, I must ask you to leave. I don't want to insist."
~ Erik Ahlberg's introduction.
News reporter: "We spoke earlier to Chief Ranger Ahlberg of the Troll Safety Patrol about the growing numbers of Trolls around the city."
Erik: "I'm sure you've seen the fires in the hills these past nights. Our observations are showing nocturnal activity on an unprecedented scale. And the numbers are increasing every night. It's a situation we're monitering closely. As you know, Troll-country is... unfortunately shrouded in mystery. But we are working hard to at last gain access to that place in order to more accurately assess the threat these creatures pose to our-"
News reporter: "Threat? Chief Ranger Ahlberg - do you suspect an attack?"
Erik: "We are prepared for any outcome. Our anti-troll technology os more effective than its ever been. My people are belling troll rocks daily. Your viewers should be reassured. Trolberg is safe on my watch."

Erik Ahlberg is the secondary antagonist of the Hilda and the Mountain King graphic novel. He is the chief ranger of the Trolberg Safety Patrol and an enemy of Hilda.

Appearance[]

Erik is a man with brown hair and a small, black mustache. His age is unknown but he appears to be middle aged.

Personality[]

Erik Ahlberg takes his job as safety patrol leader and protector of Trolberg very seriously. While he means well and wants to keep all humans in the city safe. he can be quite short sighted and act impulsively and even somewhat cowardly, and refuses to listen to Hilda when she tries to warn him about Trundle's plan.

Biography[]

Erik Ahlberg is first seen when he finds Johanna. Tontu, Twig, and Baba (who was now a human girl) in the mountains outside Trollberg, looking for Hilda (who has been turned into a Troll). He asked them to go home since it would be dark soon and there are more Trolls around than ever. He put a bell on a petrified troll not knowing that Troll was Hilda. Since Johanna did not trust him, she lied about what she was doing outside the city walls.

That evening, on the news, he demonstrated the Safety Patrol's latest weapon in fighting Trolls; a giant version of the torch guns.

After another attempt to find Hilda failed, and she herself barely escaped from some Trolls. Johanna saw herself forced to ask Erik for help. He thus accompanied her into the mountains, where they found Baba's mom and Hilda herself, who was being chased by a giant troll. Erik tried to fight the troll with his torch. but the creature was too big and simply knocked him aside.

Erik was next seen when Baba was about to be reunited with her mom. He tried to keep Baba's mom from reuniting with her daughter, since he thought Baba (who was still human) was in danger. Johanna was forced to step in and disarm Erik to prevent him from causing more harm.

When Trundle escaped his cave and attacked the city with a large group of Trolls, Erik ordered the Safety Patrol to use their new weapon. it worked and Trundle was killed, Hilda. knowing that any further fighting would wake up Amma from underneath the city, tried to reason with Erik to stop the attack, but he dismissed her. Only after Hilda used Trundle's eye to Erik a vision of things about to come did he realize the danger and ordered his men to stand down.

Quotes[]

Erik: "That will be all - dismissed! Still no leads. Never any leads..."
Ranger: "Sir! Someone to see you."
~ Erik is interrupted whilte looking at his map.
Erik: "You!"
Hilda's mother: Those guns... You can use them to... protect people from Trolls... right?
Erik: "Yes... What's this about?"
Hilda's mother: Sigh* "I need your help. And I think I can be of some help to you..."
Erik: "Ha! That put the fear of day into them."
Hilda's mother: "This is the place."
Erik: "Here? But... where's the cave? Is this a joke? It's no small matter you know, dragging me out here at this time of night. I'll remind you that the continued safety of Trolberg relies on the fulfilment of my duties! If this turns out to be a waste of my time..."
Hilda's mother: "There. I've shown you the way into the Trolls' world. Now. Help me resue my daughter."
~ Erik and Hilda's mother arrive at the entrance to Trundle's throne room.
Hilda's mother: "Hilda... is that you?"
Erik: "TROOOLLL!!"
Hilda's mother: "NO! No, that's- oh.
Erik: "Stay back , beast! I will not hesitate to fire again!"
~ Erik and Hilda's mother see Trundle's brother.
Oof.
~ Erik is kicked by Trundle's brother.

Trivia[]

  • The first season of the Hilda TV series was released in 2018. By that point, there had already been five original graphic novels of the series at the time. Hilda and the Mountain King's original graphic novel version came out in 2019, where Erik was introduced. His role was largely the same as that in the film. When Hilda season 2 was made, Erik was more fleshed out as all of season 2 minus the first episode's opening and the season finale were all original. An example of this is in the animated series and tie-in novels, he is the descendant of Edmund Ahlberg. In the graphic novels this is never brought up since the character Edmund Ahlberg is unique to the animated series.
