Erik Jan Hanussen otherwise known as The Dog is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Grigori Rasputin) in the 2021 historical action/spy film The King's Man, the third instalment in the Kingsman franchise.

He is the advisor to Kaiser Wilhelm II and 3rd highest ranking member and eventual successor leader of the Flock.

He was portrayed by Daniel Brühl, who also played Fredrick Zoller in Inglourious Basterds, Baron Zemo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Wilfried Böse in 7 Days In Entebbe.

Biography[]

Hanussen is first seen at a meeting with The Flock, where he’s given a ring of a dog to symbolise his membership to the flock. When Rasputin asks if he can have a different ring, not wanting to be the tortoise, Hanussen tells him to treat the shepherd with the same respect he holds for his joke of a tsar. Following the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Hanussen would manipulate Kaiser Wilhelm II into starting World War 1. Reminding him of his childhood feud with his cousins, the current leaders of Britain and Russia, and telling him the world will laugh at him for not keeping his word and standing by the Austrians. We later see him at another meeting with the flock, with the shepherd celebrating with the group the amount of damage they’ve been able to cause in such a short period of time.

A while later in the movie, and after the death of Rasputin, we see Hanussen meet with Wilhelm again. He tells him that the naval blockade around England has sunk another American passenger ship, and that this could lead to America joining the war. So he has Wilhelm send a code to the ambassador of Mexico, proposing an alliance and asking Mexico to invade America to divert their attention away from Britain and Germany. All to ensure Britain is starved to death. However, this ends up backfiring when Britain cracks the code and sends the message to the US president. This prompts Hanussen to visit the shepherd and tell him of his failure, causing the shepherd to send Mata Hari to infiltrate the white house.

Following the arrest and presumed execution of Mata Hari, and the deaths of Alfred DuPoint and the shepherd. Hanussen would become the new shepherd and would recruit Adolf Hitler into the flock. Having him force WIlhelm at gunpoint to abdicate and murder the Tsar of Russia Nicholas II, along with his family. Ensuring Hitler and fellow flock member Vladimir Lenin rise to power in Germany and Russia respectively, and foreshadowing a sequel centring on the second World War.

It's unknown what happened to him after the first world war but considering his real life counterpart was killed for being Jewish and being a rival of high ranking Nazis Joseph Goebbels and Herman Goring, it's likely he shared a similar fate.

Personality[]

Hanussen was a very intelligent, calm, soft-spoken and sophisticated man who was very loyal to The Flock and genuinely seemed to believe in his master's cause to the point of continuing it even when the latter was dead. He was highly manipulative and had a strong way with words which allowed him to successfully manipulate and play the Kaiser while influencing the directions he would take in the war. He also appeared to be rather good at reading people, being able to use the Kaiser's insecurities and resentment towards his brothers to help in manipulating him and swaying his judgement.

Appearance[]

Hanussen was a handsome man of average height with short brown hair and fair skin with brown eyes. He had a very elegant sense of fashion, favouring suits with fur lined greatcoats above all else and was usually seen wearing a hat and sometimes a monocle.

Trivia[]

  • This version of Erik Jan Hanussen seems to be more in line with both Erich Ludenorff and Paul von Hidenburg as a replacement as Wilhelm's advisors as in reality Hanussen wasn't an adviser but a performer and wasn't active until after the Great War had ended, only then was he a prominent figure in Germany who rubbed shoulders with the military.
