I snap a lot of necks in VR...! ...but that certain tremor as life fades from the eyes... ooh! No holo quite gets it.
~ Erik Visser to Aloy and his famous quote.
Now we're having fun, right?
~ Visser's most famous quote before killing Varl.

Erik Visser is a major antagonist of the 2022 video game Horizon Forbidden West. He is the former leader of his private mercenary company First Imperator, and later one of the original members of Far Zenith, who escaped Earth through the Odyssey after the Faro Plague struck the planet. In the present time Erik is the military commander of the Zeniths, serving as Gerard Bieri's second-in-command.

Nine centuries have passed after the Faro Plague was stopped, Erik, Gerard, and Tilda van der Meer would return back to Earth to find a GAIA backup by using Beta, one of Elisabet Sobeck's clones created through Odyssey, and use it to destroy all life on Earth and reform it that he and the rest of Far Zenith sees fit.

He was voiced and mo-capped by Marc Kudisch.

Appearance[]

Erik is a Caucasian, middle-aged man who has a low-fade hair, white skin, and brown eyes. He also wears a black futuristic clothing that is decorated in golden patterns. On his head are also golden patterns adorned within his temples.

Much like all Far Zenith members, he is revealed to be an immortal, due to extensive cellular treatments and technological implants.

Personality[]

Erik is known to be sadistic, as he takes pleasure in hurting anyone he deems low, including Beta, who only treats her as a tool to "fix" GAIA, the terraforming system on Earth, and her subordinate functions, when in reality he and the rest wanted to use the terraforming system to initiate a mass extinction suited for Far Zenith's needs. He also doesn't care about the lives of the new world, going so far in massacring some of the tribesmen that he and the rest encountered, according to Elisabet Sobeck's clone Beta.

Due to spending hundreds of years in virtual reality simulations where he would kill them for the fun of it, Erik's psychopathic tendencies are presented in a darker light, making him unrelentingly sadistic and brutal, even surpassing Helis' brutality. Erik's sadism extends when he then kills Varl, one of Aloy's allies and friends, who only questions the dying Nora Brave with him having fun, making him unrepentant and cruel.

Like the rest of the Zeniths, his fatal flaw is pride and underestimating his tribal enemies, of which he is proven wrong after Sylens' destroyed their shielding, leaving him vulnerable to Aloy during their battle at the elevator to the Zenith base. His arrogance would be the catalyst of his downfall and eventual demise at the hands of Aloy and a vengeful Zo.

Biography[]

Old World[]

Erik Visser was the creator of a lucrative private military company known as First Imperator. First Imperator had a reputation as a band of "cutthroats" while he was in charge. Erik found success with customers that demanded a more personal touch, even as international governments abandoned human soldiers in favour of technological warfare. He occasionally went so far as to hunt and kill his own prey just for the excitement of it.

After Earth was destroyed by the Faro Plague, Visser was among one of the Zeniths to join the Odyssey to Sirius.

Sirius[]

After achieving physical immortality in Sirius, Erik indulges himself into virtual reality simulations to quench his bloodlust and dwelt in their new colony. In those times, Erik would go on rampages and act violently in them as he liked, but as time went on, his dissatisfaction with the simulations turned him into a vicious psychopath that he is in the present.

Erik and a few other Far Zeniths, including Tilda van der Meer and their commander Gerard Bieri, fled after Nemesis, the Zeniths' failed creation, destroyed the Sirius system and their civilization. Gerard came up with a scheme to take a backup copy of GAIA, after which Far Zenith would utilize GAIA to create a new planet for themselves and allow Earth to perish at the hands of Nemesis. In order to accomplish this, they made an Elisabet Sobeck clone known as Beta, which allowed them to access previous Zero Dawn facilities that needed Sobeck's Alpha clearance. Under Gerard's orders, the Zeniths including Erik built a base on Earth. Erik gave the Zenith AI, Julius, instructions to control the machine lures that draw Zero Dawn machines to kill trespassers because the base was being built close to the Tenakth's Valley of the Fallen. Erik wanted to take care of base security himself, but Gerard reminded him to stay focused on their mission.

LATOPOLIS[]

After searching through many locations for a GAIA backup, Tilda, Erik, Gerard, and Beta finally arrived to a HADES testing site. When Beta eventually managed to get a GAIA backup—despite not having the sub-functions—the four learned that there was another Elisabet clone named Aloy. Despite Tilda's objections, Gerard gave Erik the order to kill Aloy because he saw her as a threat.

Erik didn't take Aloy seriously and didn't take any of his attacks seriously because of his shield and his gleeful obsession of killing her. When Aloy realized she would not prevail in the struggle, she damaged the mountings of the RECLUSE SPIDER contraption that was hanging from the ceiling of the chamber. This caused the device to collapse down the platform where Erik and her were standing, allowing Aloy to flee into the water below. Despite his assumption that she had died in the fall, Erik dispatched Specters to look for any signs of her.

Cauldron GEMINI[]

Erik, along with Gerard and Tilda, would proceed to interrupt Aloy and Beta's process of merging HEPHAESTUS with GAIA, the terraforming system, and has sights set on Beta. Varl would then proceed to protect Beta from Erik in a futile attempt, but Erik would only respond by stabbing Varl, mocking him that he is now having fun killing him, much to Aloy's disgust, before he proceeds to take Beta, HEPHAESTUS, and GAIA away.

However, Erik is eventually angered, when Tilda would later betray him by using a blinding attack, allowing Aloy to escape.

Battle With Aloy and Death[]

During the battle at the Far Zenith base, he, along with the rest of the Zeniths, have their shields disabled by Sylens through an improvised EMP grenade, using the Far Zenith technology that Aloy salvaged earlier.

Aloy would attempt to go deeper into the Far Zenith base through the lift, but Erik would quickly halt her attempts in doing so, before a final battle ensued. Resolutely declaring that he doesn't need a shield to win against this fight, and with Aloy telling him that he would regret not having one, Erik would proceed to fight against Aloy for one last time, maintaining his taunts.

Despite Erik's futuristic weaponry and advanced combat skills by a significant margin to Aloy, the Nora Brave would later, again, outwit him in combat, but this time it costed his life.

Before his death, Erik would taunt Aloy for one last time how he forgot to hurt anyone else he deems low, until Zo would completely kill him, thus avenging Varl's death. Zo herself would ironically utter his famous line "Now we're having fun, right?".

Powers and Abilities[]

Much like the rest of Far Zenith members, Erik's body is covered in an energy shield, making him impervious to any form of physical attacks, including arrows. Unlike most Far Zenith members, however, Erik, along with Tilda van der Meer, is shown to have a formidable combat skill, despite losing his own energy shield.

Erik is also able to conjure a golden blade from his right hand, the same blade he used to kill the Nora Brave Varl. His attacks comprise of energy projectiles, as well as a ground pound, which releases golden spikes in a cross fashion. He is known to have superhuman agility and speed, who is able to dash towards Aloy in an instant.

Like most Far Zenith members, Erik is known to possess the powers of flight.
