Eriol Hiiragizawa is a supporting antagonist from Cardcaptor Sakura series.

He was voiced in Japanese by Nozomu Sasaki (who also voiced Johan Liebert from Monster, Tetsuo Shima from Akira, K9999 from The King of Fighters, and Mello from Death Note), and in the English Nelvana dub by Bill Switzer.

Biography[]

Background[]

Eriol Hiiragizawa was born on March 23rd of an unknown year as the reincarnation of Clow Reed, the sorcerer who created the Clow Cards and their Guardians, Kerberos and Yue. Having foreseen in his past life that Sakura Kinomoto would be Clow's successor, Eriol did what he could to carry out Clow's will, even creating his own Guardians, Spinel Sun and Ruby Moon.

At some point, Eriol met and fell in love with Kaho Mizuki, who had her own role to play in Clow Reed's saga.

Events of Cardcaptor Sakura[]

During Sakura's fifth-grade year, Eriol enrolled into her class in order to get close to her as her classmate while at the same time causing strange incidents in order for her to make the Clow Cards her own, usually spectating along with his Guardians.

For his first strange incident, Eriol causes a persistent rain to fall solely over Sakura's hometown, Tomoeda. When Sakura is unable to use a Clow Card, Eriol and his Guardians watch in satisfaction as she realizes that a new spell is needed and successfully converts The Firey into what would later be known as a Sakura Card, only to collapse from exhaustion.

For his next strange happening, Eriol discreetly enchants the school piano while accompanying the singing of Sakura's best friend, Tomoyo, causing it to attack her anytime she sings or speaks. After Syaoran's lightning ofuda fails to stop the piano, Sakura lures it off the rooftop by converting the Song Card.

As a teddy bear craze sweeps the school, Eriol accompanies Sakura, Tomoyo, and Syaoran to a crafts store, where he buys many spools of thread. That night, Eriol uses the threads to control Syaoran like a marionette, forcing Sakura to convert the Sword Card.

When Sakura has trouble completing her teddy bear, Eriol helps her while also hexing the teddy bear, causing it to grow to a gargantuan size when Sakura goes to give it to her crush (and Yue's unknowing false form), Yukito Tsukishiro. When the giant bear starts destroying Yukito's house, Sakura converts the Jump and Fly Cards.

The next night, Eriol moves the King Penguin slide at Penguin Park and leaves in its place a deep pit, which he then fills with sheep plushies when Sakura flies into it. Sakura converts the Erase Card to erase the sheep plushies, and then the Power Card to put the slide back in its rightful place.

While an exhausted Sakura rakes leaves, Eriol again helps her, this time secretly hexing her older brother Touya's bike. After Sakura transforms a series of Cards in a panic, one of them, the Dash, possesses Touya's bike, which causes Sakura to convert the Windy and Loop Cards.

When Sakura reads Alice in Wonderland for her book report, Eriol hexes a leaf and gives it to her to use as a bookmark. The next time she reads the book, the hexed leaf transports her into the story as the titular Alice and shows her friends as other characters, including Eriol himself as the Cheshire Cat. During her time there, Sakura converts the Big and Little Cards, and Eriol/Cheshire Cat offers Sakura advice on how to escape the story as she's being pursued by Kerberos/the Queen of Hearts.

During Tomoeda Elementary's sweets bazaar, Eriol senses the sudden activity of Spinel Sun, who had encountered Kerberos (both in their false forms) and had been all but force-fed sweets, which caused the Guardian to go on a sugar-high frenzy. After Sakura converts the Sleep Card to put the crowd to sleep, Eriol merely comments in amusement as he holds an exhausted Spinel in his arms.

When Eriol accompanies Sakura, Syaoran, and Tomoyo to a teddy bear exhibit, he traps Sakura and Syaoran aboard a hexed elevator, leaving Tomoyo behind to purportedly go find help. He then causes Sakura to fall down a dark pit, causing her to convert the Float Card.

After luring the group, including Kerberos and Yue, to Penguin Park, only for nothing to happen, Eriol cancels out the Guardians' ability to revert to their false forms and watches in amusement as they (mainly Kerberos) help Sakura with her chores. After Sakura converts the Shield Card to protect them from his spell, enabling them to transform back, Eriol comments on how the Shield's strength reflects on how precious the protected is to the user.

During gym class, Eriol is matched against Syaoran (whose ire he has already drawn) for one-on-one basketball. He gives Syaoran advice on how to get a good shot, which Syaoran accomplishes, leaving him questioning Eriol that much more. At night, Eriol lures the group to the school and traps Tomoyo within their classroom, which in turn is spatially warped throughout the school, and comments on Sakura's growing magic after she converts the Shadow Card to help her find Tomoyo and more quickly picks up on Eriol/Clow Reed's presence. Eriol also forcibly reverts Yue back into his disguise after the latter recognizes him as Clow's reincarnation.

When Syaoran's cousin Meiling briefly returns from Hong Kong, Eriol hexes the slide and statuettes at Penguin Park to attack the group and comments on Meiling's advice when Sakura converts the Freeze Card at her advice.

As Sakura prepares to go Christmas shopping with her brother, Eriol hexes a metal railing and sends it to attack her and Syaoran, causing her to convert the Mist Card to dissolve the railing. Eriol later helps Sakura record a piano hymn as a gift for the Cards.

When Sakura and Tomoyo go to retrieve their New Year's fortunes at Tsukimine Shrine, Eriol is there as a volunteer and hexes Sakura's fortune to tell her that she will see the future in her dreams. That night, Sakura converts the Dream Card in her sleep and dreams about a silhouetted figure flanked by two other figures resembling Kerberos and Yue.

When Sakura and her friends and classmates visit a recently opened indoor waterpark, Eriol hexes the pool, nearly drowning Sakura's friend Rika before the Watery Card is converted. Of note is that Eriol breathes a sigh of relief when Sakura converts the Card in time, though he evades Ruby/Nakuru's question as to why he keeps doing such "cumbersome things."

When Class 5-2 goes on a ski trip, Eriol saves Syaoran when the latter loses control of his skis and nearly collides with a tree. When Eriol reassures him that he just needs a little more practice, Syaoran demands to know what he means, to which Eriol simply smiles. Later that night, Eriol, inspired by the snowy mountains, tells a scary story about a Snow Woman, much to Sakura's dread. He then "apologizes" for telling the story due to her dislike, and when she asks him what he dislikes the most, Eriol simply says that he'll tell her later. The next day, Eriol accompanies Sakura up the intermediate slope, where he causes a blizzard and then an avalanche. When Sakura exhausts herself converting the Time Card, Eriol calls off the event and when they return to their class, he muses to himself that the one thing he hates the most is causing her so much trouble.

When Ruby Moon (as her false form, Nakuru Akizuki) films a movie starring Yukito and the Kinomoto siblings for Seijyo High's upcoming festival, Eriol allows her to use his house as one of the settings, fully aware that Yue (and thus, Yukito) is on the verge of disappearing due to Sakura's inability to sustain him. During filming, Yukito collapses and is saved by Sakura's use of the Windy, after which Eriol presciently escorts Touya and Yukito to a bedroom where Touya reveals to Yukito his true nature and gives his powers to Yue.

At Seijyo's school festival, Eriol compliments Sakura on her acting after the film's viewing and joins the others for drinks before leaving to "run an errand." When Sakura and Yukito visit the "Path of the Stars" exhibit, Eriol shatters the glass stars and Sakura converts the Maze and Illusion Cards to divert other visitors. She then tracks down the source of Clow Reed's power, which leads her to Eriol. Eriol then renders her unconscious and alters her memory of the encounter to remember him only as a familiar silhouette.

At Tsukimine Shrine's festival, Eriol hexes a painting of a horse to bring it to life and attack Sakura's group, causing Sakura to convert the Wood and Thunder Cards to quell the beast before using the Glow to illuminate the now blacked-out festival.

On a snowy night reminiscent of that of Clow Reed's death, Eriol summons an army of snowmen to attack Sakura's group, which causes her to convert the Snow Card to erase said snowmen. After Sakura converts the Return to go back to Clow's past, Eriol finally confronts the group, revealing himself not only to be the one behind the strange incidents, but also Clow's reincarnation. He then blocks out the Sun and the Moon and covers the sky in darkness, causing all non-magical people in Tomoeda (including Tomoyo and Touya) to fall asleep, and tells Sakura that if she doesn't dispel the darkness by sunrise, everyone will sleep forever. After Sakura converts the Light and Dark Cards (with help from Syaoran, Kerberos, and Yue), the darkness ends, and Eriol expresses satisfaction that all of the Cards have become Sakura Cards. He and his Guardians then depart before Kerberos can interrogate them.

The next day, when Sakura and her friends go to Eriol's house to get answers before he returns to England, Eriol explains that all the strange events were an elaborate ruse to get Sakura to convert the Cards before their power could run out.
