I just can't help but take every opportunity to make you all suffer. My entire purpose is to see each and every one of their faces contorted in agony and despair. Humanity is a stain on the world... I despise the celestials of the Upper Planes who go against the natural order. They condemn and admonish beings like me, all while watching humanity suffer from secluded little heaven. They realized that humanity would never willingly choose good over evil. So they created the heavensborn to tip the balance in their favor. It's so self-indulgent that it makes me want to puke.... I've made quite a hobby out of breaking them and sending them back to their creators. I throw them into the deepest pit of despair before extinguishing their lives. There's been no greater joy in my eternal life... and it took a lot of work to get you right where I need you, Tyrion.... My actions that day were all for you, my dearest Tyrion. All so I could see the despair on your face when you realized the truth
~ Eris IIlmater explaining her purpose and motivation.
HAHAHAHA! Did you two actually think my true form was that of a teenage girl?! No... I am an ancient one... I am older than time itself.
~ Eris revealing her true form as the Empress of Discord.
"You know what? Maybe you're right. Maybe I'll never be satisfied. Maybe I won't feel any satisfaction from killing you. But I'm still going to try!
~ Eris threatening to kill Tyrion right before her human body is destroyed and her ultimate defeat.

Eris Illmater is the main antagonist of the 2023 visual-novel video game Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane.

She first appears as an ordinary helpful, but creepy student at the Wyverngarde Imperial Academy, but later turns out to a demon in disguise as a human whose sole goal is to inflict pain onto others and destroy the main protagonist Tyrion Cuthbert's life by making him suffer.

Appearance[]

At first, Eris is a sixteen year old teenager that wears a black dress with bandages on her hands and arms. She has long hair that is black on the exterior part, but is white on the interior part. Her eyes are bright purple with white pupils.

However, when she reveals her demon form, she is a towering figure with elongated arms and fingers. She wears a grim reaper-like robe that only covers her head and part of her torso and her body from the waist down is a grotesque jumble of legs that looks similar to the tentacles of an octopus. Her face has no eyes but has a distorted mouth that usually similes, constantly displaying her sadistic side.

History[]

Past[]

Before taking the role of Eris Illmater, she is the daughter to Asmodeus, the Devil himself, and would take the position as the Empress of Discord and lead as the Lord of the Sixth Circle of Hell where she tortures people's souls for pleasure.

Out of boredom, she teleported to the human world and would reside in the Kingdom of Wyverngarde, where for centuries she would murder and take over the bodies of other humans as a disguise. While under disguise, she would murder and torture various people and would find extreme pleasure by ruining others' lives and having them be killed later on and by altering people's memories to further mess with them.

Making it her Goal to Ruin Tyrion's Life and Twenty Years Before the Game's Events[]

Twenty years before the game's events occurred, Tyrion Cuthbert was born to Frey Cuthbert and Eris made it her sole mission to ruin Tyrion's life because of the fact that he is a Heavensborn, meaning that Tyrion is half celestial/angel and gives him the power called the Eye of Horus to sometimes read people's inner thoughts. When Tyrion was young, Eris framed Frey for murder. During the trial, Frey was defended by Ruby Tymora. Ruby unfortunately could not save Frey, and she was found guilty and later executed. Ruby then adopted Tyrion, and he later became a defense attorney like her.

Months Right Before the Game's Events[]

Years later, a few months before the events of the game began, she kidnapped the real Eris Illmater, the daughter of crime lord Jon Leiran, better known as the Eyetaker, where she would torture her for months. She eventually murdered her and took over her body as her current human disguise. She then altered the Eyetaker's memory and posed as his daughter to use his connections to further achieve her crimes and goals, including getting close to Ruby.

Afterwards, she started a serial killing spree in Wyverngarde where she would brainwash people into committing gruesome murders, but when the Inquisition, the kingdom's police unit that tackles cases involving magic, and Prosecutor Aria Steelwind would catch the killers, they would all say that they had "No choice" but to commit them and that they all did not want to actually commit the murders. All the murders were unrelated, except for one piece of evidence left behind by the killers: a card with a Purple Mark symbol on it. This made Aria believe that the killers were telling the truth, but they would still have to go to prison and most likely be executed for them.

During the serial killings and becoming Eris Illmater, she would become a student and attend Wyverngarde Imperial Academy, an academy dedicated to teaching students all forms of magic and "befriend" student outcast Wallace Nightgrave.

The Coldhearted Aristocrat[]

Finding the Heavensborn[]

While visiting a village on the outskirts of the kingdom, Tyrion and Ruby spend the night at a local tavern owned by a friend of Ruby named Flinhart McCoy where Tyrion would meet his adopted daughter Celeste McCoy, a feared mercenary who knows magic spells. During the night, Tyrion has a nightmare where he is in a hellish like environment with a young-looking woman saying that she has "Finally found you, heavensborn!" Tyrion wakes up and the woman's appearance is later confirmed to be Eris.

The Walking Dead[]

Introduction to Tyrion and Celeste and Murder at the Academy[]

When Tyrion, Celeste, and Ruby went to the Wyverngarde Imperial Academy to gather insight on Tyrion's Eyes of Horus powers, Eris helped them by giving them information about supernatural phenomena, the academy, and the brief history of the Kingdom of Wyverngarde, including how the mythical dragon Rathallion, who supposedly existed centuries ago and kept Wyverngarde safe from its enemies, is higher ranked than the king himself in the constitution.

Shortly afterwards, the academy goes on lockdown when Professor Catherine Bellwether is found murdered. Wallace is arrested and put on trial for the murder by Aria when traces of Wallace's necromancy magic are found on the body, and being the only necromancer in the academy. Tyrion and Celeste take Wallace's defense.

During Tyrion and Celeste's investigation, Eris briefly helps the two by giving them information about other magic spells and evidence that helps in proving Wallace's innocence. Later on, Tyrion proves in court that the killer was Headmaster Theodore Redmond, and he is sent to prison, but Aria later finds in Redmond's office that he had a Purple Mark card on his desk.

First Display of Her True Self[]

While at the prison, Aria would question Redmond about the card, but he states he has no knowledge of the card's existence. Eris would then arrive and knock out Aria, just as Redmond remembered how Eris was the one who put ideas into his head to murder Bellwether. She then rambles on how humans are amusing to play with and that she originally planned on having Wallace become the killer but choice Redmond instead. Their conversation ends with her assaulting Redmond, knocking him out and make him permanently forget the talk they had that led to him becoming a killer and thus having him be imprisoned for life.

The Origin of Horus[]

Civil Suit for An Employee's Death and First Mention of the Eyetaker[]

After defending Wallace, Tyrion and Celeste head off to Tyrion's home city of Aurinax. During their stay, in a civil trial, they defend factory owner Stefanic Dracogen who is sued for the death of employee Justin Waye due to alleged poor maintenance of the factory where Justin fell into a vat of acid.

Tyrion and Celeste investigate and prove in court that Justin was in debt to the crime lord the Eyetaker and tried to steal Dracogen's gold from his office safe to pay off the debt but then felt guilty and returned the gold back. However, at the same time, noble Lloyd von Sanctus sent had instructed an Arcane Construct to sabotage the factory and then would successful sue Dracogen to make money, but the Construct, not fully understanding von Sanctus's orders, accidentally murdered Justin by pushing him into the vat. Von Sanctus then destroyed the Construct by ordering it to fall into the vat to destroy the evidence. But his plan failed when Tyrion proved that he was the one that accidentally murdered Justin.

Von Sanctus then drops the civil suit, but due to his position in the nobility, he is not arrested for manslaughter. However, as Dracogen tells Tyrion and Celeste, the court of public opinion will know about von Sanctus's crimes.

Connection with the Eyetaker[]

After the trial, the Eyetaker has a conversation with his "daughter" Eris where he comments on how he does not understand Justin's action of returning the gold, but Eris remarks back that he must have remorse for his actions but also comments that if he did not "do the right thing" then he would still be alive and the Eyetaker would have his gold, while having an evil grin on her face. The Eyetaker then mentions that it is a shame they do not have the gold, however, Eris says back that they made more than a profit today, subtly suggesting Tyrion's performance in court and the information she has gathered about his skills as a lawyer and always determined to find the truth.

Severed Ties[]

Murder at the Lords' Ball and Assistance in the Investigation[]

Tyrion and Celeste are invited by Prince Aster de Wyverngarde to the Lords' Ball because he admires Tyrion's dedication to stop corruption and find the truth. During the ball, William Frega, the head of the Frega noble household, is murdered and his eldest daughter Beatrice Frega is arrested and put on trial; her defensive lawyer is Ruby. Aria is unable to prosecute due to being attacked during the investigation and asks Tyrion to be her replacement. Tyrion hesitates but takes the role to figure out the truth.

During the investigation, Tyrion and Celeste encounter Eris twice who reveals that her father is associated with Beatrice. Later on, Laefe Frega's dog Tracker barks at Eris furiously who says that animals can always somehow detect who she truly is, but then she alters everyone's memories and instead says that animals have a dislike for her. She briefly assists in the investigation by giving more information on magic spells that may have been used by the killer.

Trying to Stop Tyrion from Finding the Truth[]

Tyrion and Celeste uncover that Beatrice is the killer, but she has an alibi. Right before the trial, Ruby has Tyrion meet the Eyetaker and Eris who reveal that Beatrice murdered her father to claim his inheritance and that she would pay off a deal she made with the Eyetaker and promised to use her new position as the head of House Frega to have him combat corruption and that Ruby would defend Beatrice due to Ruby being a longtime business partner with the Eyetaker; the reason being so that she can gather information that is difficult to obtain. They also reveal that the Eyetaker's goons were the ones who attacked Aria. They ask Tyrion to drop the case, but he cannot live with himself by letting a murderer go free and becomes angry with Ruby by being in cahoots with criminals to achieve her goals. Tyrion admits that he will bring Beatrice to justice no matter what they say.

Eris then talks in private with Tyrion and remarks on Ruby that when she adopted Tyrion that he left all his friends behind and she "used him" in a way to make him become a defense attorney like her without himself making up his own mind on what he wants to become, making Tyrion question his relationship with Ruby. She further remarks on how his relationship with Celeste will actually lead to something or that she will leave him once he cannot pay off her services as his bodyguard. Afterwards, Tyrion remembers everything she said and that the trial will be starting soon.

In the trial, Tyrion proves that Beatrice is the killer by revealing in court that Beatrice made a Blood Contract--a contract signed by someone and a demon, with the details depended on what the demon says--with the demon familiar Marrunath where he would murder William while Beatrice was with others to establish an alibi. Tyrion proves that the conversations she had with others during the murder were actually secret commands she would telepathically say to Marrunath on how to commit the crime and what weapon to use. After her defeat, Beatrice warns that seeing how she broke her promise in the Blood Contract that she will not be the head of House Frega, she would die and her mind, body, and soul will be controlled in the near future by the Empress of Discord. Tyrion then says that there might be a loophole in the contract where they can save Beatrice, but Marrunath explains doing so unsuccessfully will result in her and Tyrion being sent to the Abyssal Hell. Beatrice accepts her fate and is sent to prison.

After the trial, Tyrion remembers Eris's words about Ruby and cusses her out which results in her leaving the courthouse in tears, but he does not say the same things about Celeste when remembering what Eris said about their relationship.

Confession to her Father[]

Sometime later, the Eyetaker rants about how they have to kill Tyrion later until Eris says that that will not be necessary and then brings the Eyetaker's old memories back and he realizes that Eris is not his actual daughter and that Eris has been using him and his criminal empire the whole time. She explains that his ancestor Lord Leiran made a pact with her about he would give her Wyverngarde by destroying the corrupt nobility. Unfortunately, his plot was revealed, and he was stripped of his status. Eris then proclaimed to own his whole bloodline for him failing to give her the kingdom including the Eyetaker and his daughter. She then goes into detail about how she kidnapped and tortured her for months and made her watch as Eris took over her place as the new Eris Illmater until she made her father forget that his daughter went missing while Eris watched on with enjoyment and then had her minions rip her soul apart, killing her. Eris, however, says that torturing the daughter was not satisfying enough and that she actually wants to torture a heavensborn: Tyrion Cuthbert

After the Eyetaker says she will kill her, Eris brainwashes nearby citizens to form a mob where they hunt down the Eyetaker and brutally lynch him.

Attorney of the Arcane[]

At the Grand Cathedral[]

A month after Beatrice's trial, Tyrion and Celeste move into an apartment so that Tyrion can avoid Ruby. They are greeted by a recovered Aria to catch up with them. During the visit, they get a letter sent by Garrick Pierce--the killer from The Coldhearted Aristocrat who murdered Celeste's father and framed her for it. In the letter, Pierce asks to meet Tyrion and Celeste in private who knows who Celeste's true parents are, but in exchange, they have to grant him his freedom and not be executed. It also says to meet at the Prayer Room in the Grand Cathedral of the Scaled Lord. Tyrion at first says that they will not go, but Celeste talks to him and that she does not forgive Pierce at all but is fine with freeing him to learn about her past.

Tyrion and Celeste arrive at the Grand Cathedral where everyone of the nobility is present, including the members of all of the four Pillar House families--Houses Frega, Steelwind, von Sanctus, and Sibyl--who are the ones that control the government and protect the royal family. They bump into Prince Aster and Royal Advisor Remus Virgilae but neither explain what the event being held is about. Members of the nobility that are currently in prison are temporarily given freedom to attend, which is why Pierce is there.

They head outside and bump into Laefe, who is now the new head of House Frega, and a temporarily released Beatrice, who is accompanied by Eris. Beatrice explains that the Empress of Discord has not used her yet, but everyone's memories are altered to say that the Empress has not killed her yet. Annoyed, Beatrice remarks by saying that does she have to do that while glancing at Eris, Tyrion asks what is up, but she says to shrug it off. Tyrion asks why Eris is there and she explains that she was requested to accompany Beatrice and also says she told her "father" to not go after Tyrion. After Tyrion and Celeste leave, Eris tells Beatrice not to look so gloomy when the "main event" is about to happen. Beatrice figures that Eris is going to use her, but she demands that Eris not harm her sisters, which Eris says she cannot promise.

Tyrion and Celeste head to the Prayer Room and bump into Aria who wishes them luck. They meet Pierce about the letter; although, Pierce insists that he did not send it to them. It cuts to black as Eris proclaims that the main event has begun.

The Massacre and the Investigation[]

At different areas of the cathedral, Aria goes on a rampage where she attacks guards and murders Lloyd von Sanctus and Coraline Sibyl. At the Prayer Room, Celeste goes to investigate noises from outside, and then Tyrion and Pierce are knocked out by a spell, but before Tyrion faints, he sees Beatrice enter the room. Tyrion is awakened by Celeste and sees that Pierce has been murdered presumably by Aria, and she insists that she be arrested.

Tyrion and Celeste investigate, and Celeste explains that she fought off Aria but did not see Beatrice, although Beatrice could have cast an invisibility spell to sneak in, and she found Tyrion and Aria unconscious and Pierce dead. They learn that Prince Aster was trapped against his will by a magic forcefield to avoid harm, but neither him or his guards did it and that the event was a funeral for Prince Aster's recently late father King Olivier, thus making Aster the new king, but the general public does not know yet. They also find out that Eris has been missing since the massacre happened.

Tyrion and Celeste talk with Aria about how she is the latest victim of the one who has been brainwashing people with the Purple Mark cards and that Aria does not remember committing the murders. Tyrion takes her defense where she will be prosecuted by her father, war veteran Lucio Steelwind and Remus will act as the judge at his home in the city of Ladon to have the trial be private from the public and only members of the nobility will view the trial.

The First Day of the Trial[]

The next day, they all arrive at Ladon, but the city is in ruins. They host the trial at Remus's home, but it is actually a rundown temple. Remus then reveals himself to be the mythical dragon Rathallion and will continue as the judge as such. Tyrion calls Beatrice to the stand who testifies that she was being mind-controlled during the massacre and remembers nothing, but during some of her statements, they are altered; she displays annoyance but cannot explain what happened when Tyrion asks.

Beatrice leads Tyrion to notice her contradiction that she did not have a Purple Mark card on her when she was found, unlike Aria, and that Marrunath tried to prevent Beatrice from seeing the card, indicating that a demon is involved in the massacre and the Purple Mark serial killings. He also figures out that Beatrice was being controlled by the Empress of Discord due to her Blood Contract with Marrunath, but also that Aria had made a Blood Contract the Empress and Tyrion summons the contract, which states that Aria's mind, body, and soul will be controlled by a unknown party called the Patron, someone who is in league with the Empress and is the one that wanted the three nobles murdered.

Tyrion explains that the Patron wanted von Sanctus and Sibyl to be murdered to weaken their noble households, but did not target Laefa Frega because she is new to the position as house head and controlled Aria to frame the Steelwind household. Further, they wanted Pierce dead because Pierce knew the identity of Celeste's real parents and that the Patron is someone who would be threatened by Celeste's parentage and lured Tyrion and Celeste to the massacre to try to murder Celeste as well, however, Tyrion cannot figure out a single suspect that would want Celeste's parentage a secret to achieve their goals.

Second Investigation and Confession of who She Is[]

The day's proceedings are put on hold, and Tyrion and Celeste continue to investigate. They suspect that the Eyetaker might be involved but find out that he is missing. Tyrion then resorts to talking with Ruby to get information about the Eyetaker and they reconcile. Ruby reveals the Eyetaker's fate, but when Tyrion asks about Eris, Ruby mentions that she could not have been the Eyetaker's daughter because his real daughter had red hair and Ruby has no memory of meeting Eris during Beatrice's trial. Tyrion figures out that Ruby must have been tricked into signing a Blood Contract due to not remembering who Eris is, thus making Tyrion figure that Eris has to be the Empress of Discord from recalling past experiences of Eris's strange behavior. Tyrion telepathically talks to Eris, and she turns herself in.

The Second Day of the Trial[]

The next day in court, Eris takes the stand. She says that she may or may not be the Patron and taunts to Lucio about Aria's life is in her hands and that, even if Eris's human body is destroyed, she can still kill Aria from the Abyssal Hell and suggests to him to kill Aria to end her suffering. She then taunts Tyrion by stating that her motive for everything is to make others suffer because she finds pleasure in it and she wants those that are heavensborn suffer more, including Tyrion, and she will do that to him by having him figuring out the truth to the case.

After testimony and cross examination, Tyrion figures that Eris is not the Patron and that she killed von Sanctus and Sibyl but not Pierce, plus she made the Blood Contract with the Patron on the day of the massacre and not prior. She refuses to say who the Patron is and that she wants Tyrion to figure out who it is. He figures that von Sanctus and Sibyl were murdered using magic through Aria, but the Patron wanted to murder Pierce personally because they have an emotional grudge against Pierce and Tyrion can only think of one person who would want that: Celeste McCoy.

Tyrion screams in anguish at figuring out the truth and Eris finds pleasure in the moment. Tyrion reveals to the court by summoning Celeste's Blood Contract which states if Tyrion were to die that Eris would revive him that her soul would be bounded to the Abyssal Hell, that she has to engage in actions deemed necessary to secure the compliance and cooperation of Aria in the Eris's endeavors, and finally that Celeste would murder Pierce herself for revenge and make Tyrion's consciousness be restored.

Celeste confesses that she signed the contract to save Tyrion because he was the one that Eris killed and not Pierce. She did not fight Aria outside the Prayer Room, she actually fought Beatrice and Eris, and they overpowered her and went into the Prayer Room, and she was the one that tricked Aria into signing the Blood Contract while under the control of Eris after signing hers. Eris finds pleasure in the fact that the one person that Tyrion loves the most is the one who made a deal with her to save him.

Eris further taunts Lucio explains how the Patron is the one whose existence is bounded to Aria and the only way to save her is to kill the Patron, which leads to him to try to execute Celeste, but then Aria jumps in and shames him, for deciding who lives and who dies, and Tyrion for not defending Celeste, seeing how she is his client. Celeste testifies, and Tyrion proves her timeline of events is wrong and that Eris changed her memories. Suddenly, Celeste's personality changes and it turns out that Eris is controlling her and Eris knocks her out. Tyrion challenges Eris to claim that Celeste's Blood Contract is fraudulent.

Final Battle with Tyrion and Defeat[]

Tyrion, Celeste, and Eris are teleported to the Court of Azathoth, "the courtroom of the gods". Eris and Tyrion get into a final battle where Eris reveals her true demon form and uses most of his celestial powers to put of sprouting angel wings. Tyrion proves that the contract was fraudulent by proving that Celeste was not Pierce's killer but actually Pierce himself. Eris made Beatrice cast a spell on Tyrion making it seem like he was dead, then Pierce woke up, but Celeste decided not to kill him and not sign the contract knowing that Tyrion would not approve of it. Pierce, realizing his situation, decided to kill himself to prevent being killed by Celeste or a demon. Celeste then signed the contract, seeing how Pierce was dead now, but this made the contract faulty.

They are teleported back to the courtroom, where Eris berates Celeste for ruining her plans and her thinking she is better than Eris. Eris then berates humanity for being corrupt and how she would have understood Tyrion, being part celestial defeating her, but Celeste, a human, is the one that defeated her. Tyrion rebuts by saying that Celeste is a better person than himself. He then asks her if she felt satisfaction for killing his mother. Eris confesses to having Frey killed for being part celestial and asks him how it feels for knowing who his mother's killer is, but she gets angry when he does not respond, thus getting no pleasure from his anger. Tyrion says he feels pity for her for being an empty shell internally and being envious to humans' emotions and that she will never get satisfaction from killing him. She replies by rejecting Tyrion's pity and talking him down and last says that even if she does not get any satisfaction from killing him, that she still is going to try. Suddenly, Rathallion blows fire on her, destroying her human body and she disappears.

Post-Defeat[]

Although she has been defeated, Tyrion has to prove that Celeste is not the Patron and save Aria. After testimonies, Tyrion proves that the Patron was King Aster and has him take the stand. Aster eventually confesses that he is the Patron and tricked Aria into signing the Blood Contract, believing that it was a marriage license. He consorted with Eris to commit the murders and frame Aria. He did it to get rid of corruption in the kingdom under his new reign as king and will go to any lengths to achieve it. However, even with his confession, he cannot be arrested as the general public will think he was overthrown by the corrupt nobility, thus making the future of the kingdom's legitimacy will be in jeopardy.

Tyrion thinks back about how Aster tried to kill Celeste and Pierce because of Celeste's parentage. He eventually figures out that Celeste's real father is Rathallion and makes her constitutionally superior to him. Aster further rebuts that legitimacy is on the line, that Celeste does not have the skills to rule, and that his actions are justified for stopping corruption, but Lucio murders him in the middle of his sentence, killing the Patron and saving Aria.

Lucio has himself arrested, and Tyrion and Celeste venture off as their lives are now on a different track. Celeste will now be the queen, and Tyrion becomes a prosecutor under Aria. However, everything will be fine as long as they have each other and the game ends.

In the post credit scenes, Beatrice will not be executed as they need her to tell when Eris will return. It then cuts to Eris trying to go back to Wyverngarde, but her father Asmodeus refuses and "grounds her" for her recent foolish behavior.

Personality[]

Before Eris's true nature is revealed, her personality is of an ordinary teenage girl with vast knowledge on magic and Wyverngarde's history, but has a sometimes creepy way of explaining things. Later on, she slowly reveals her true sadistic side when she makes comments about humans and how corrupted they all can be.

When her true identity of being the Empress of Discord is revealed, she finally portrays her true feelings on humanity being the scum of the Earth and finding satisfaction and pleasure into messing with them. She becomes more and more sadistic by having a constant sadistic grin when explaining her actions and motives and still getting satisfaction by just even explaining her actions. She also enjoys talking down to anyone to make them suffer even more. Although, when her plans are ruined, she displays aggressive anger, losing her somewhat calmness altogether.

Trivia[]

  • She has the ability to break the fourth wall as she says during her cross examination in the final case when Tyrion presents the wrong evidence in one of her statements, she says the music did not stop and that Tyrion got it wrong and has to try again.
  • Her exact role in having Frey Cuthbert be executed is unknown as the game ends on a cliffhanger where two unseen people talk about how they conducted an experiment on Frey and that Tyrion is getting his celestial powers. It is unconfirmed if Eris was in league with these two or if she even knew if they existed.
  • Her human first name Eris is from Greek origin and means "strife" or "discord". It is most famously associated with the Greek goddess of strife and discord, Eris, who is known for stirring up conflict and trouble, just like how Eris commits total chaos for pleasure and that her demon name is the Empress of Discord.
  • Seeing how Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane will be getting a sequel titled Tyrion Cuthbert: Beyond the Arcane at a unconfirmed release date, it is unknown whether Eris will make an appearance, if any, in the sequel or in the planned third installment.
