~ Ernest Miller to his daughter. |
“ | I will not accept a life I do not deserve! | „ |
~ Ernest's motto and catchphrase - which he shares with his daughter Maxine. |
Ernest Miller is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Ruth) of Ti West’s X trilogy. He is the estranged father and archenemy of protagonist Maxine Minx.
In his characterisation, he originally started out as The Televangelist shown on the television in the first film. Then six years later, amidst the brutal Night Stalker murders that plagued Los Angeles, it was revealed that he was running his own cult out of North Hollywood; Miller believes that modern society is inherently sinful and corrupt, especially Hollywood, which he views as a cesspool of vice and moral degradation. To this end, he abducts and kills various Hollywood starlets who were Maxine's colleagues.
He was portrayed by Simon Prast in both films.
Personality[]
Ernest's personality has always been the same since X. He was in a bad mood, because his daughter Maxine was a proxy and led a life of sins. When he found out that his daughter went to Hollywood to become a movie star, he shows himself to be insane, sadistic, eccentric and delusional. But he stills seem sane enough to know Right and Wrong, making him hypocritical, as he loathes Hollywood and the Filming Industry, seeing it as nothing but sin when he himself commits murder.
Biography[]
Ernest Miller and his wife had a daughter named Maxine, although his wife died during childbirth. Ernest, a preacher and televangelist, raised Maxine with the gospel, hoping for her to become a dancer in the church, and encouraged her to never accept a life she felt she didn't deserve.
However, when Maxine reached her early twenties, she abandoned her religious beliefs and went to try and become a star in the porn industry, abandoning her maiden name and taking on the stage name 'Minx'. Ernest often preached on television about Maxine, wanting her to return home to him.
In 1979, Maxine travelled with her friends to a lone Texas farm so they could film a pornographic film, with Maxine starring. However, the owners of the farm, Pearl and Howard Douglas, started a massacre one night, resulting in Maxine being the lone survivor and killing Pearl and Howard in defence. Ernest freakingly preached on television throughout, wanting his daughter to return to both her beliefs and to him.
MaXXXine[]
A few years later, in 1985, Maxine keeps her survival a secret and attempts to make it in mainstream Hollywood by getting the lead role in The Puritan II. While filming starts up, Ernest hires private investigator John Labat to track Maxine down, and then he begins targeting Maxine's friends and stalking his daughter. He watching her at a peep show she performs in, later killing two of her friends and carving Satanic symbols into their corpses to make the murders look like the work of the Night Stalker.
Ernest is confronted by Maxine in a dramatic climax. She discovers him in a remote mansion, watching an old home video of her as a child. In the ensuing confrontation, Maxine ultimately kills Ernest, putting an end to his reign of terror.
