Villain Overview

Ernst is the overarching antagonist of Moon Knight Volume 8, the 2016 run of the Moon Knight comic book series. Originally a member of the Nazi party who partook in the creating of the Red Skull and the Hate Monger, Ernst felt that Hitler's rein was coming to an end and decided to flee to America after a Jew tried to trick him into giving lies to the Nazis in exchange for safe passage to America.

Ernst tricked the Jew into believing that he would give lies to the Nazis and killed him, smuggling his wife and son - Elias - to America under the name Yitz Perlman. Later on, Ernst taught Elias to be a Rabbi and Elias had a son named Marc Spector. Marc and Ernst became good friends with Marc considering Ernst as an uncle. At some point, Ernst discovered a way to prolong his life by stimulating the dark primordial center of his brain by killing and torturing Jews on a regular basis.

One day, Marc and Ernst agreed to meet up at the latter's house, when Marc find Ernst is no where to be seen, he looks around to find a hidden door to a basement where Spector finds Ernst torturing a Jew. Ernst explains his involvement with the Nazis and how he smuggle the Spector family into America, as well as revealing why he kills Jews. Ernst gets bitten by Marc, who traumatized by this event, develops Dissociative Identity Disorder, leading to his Steven Grant and Jake Lockley personalities. Decades later, Marc Spector became Moon Knight and Ernst decides to try and corrupt him into becoming the heir to his cult, the Société des Sadiques.

Biography[]

Originally a Nazi who worked with the organization who cloned Adolph Hitler, resulting in the Hate-Monger, Ernst became one of the Nazi officers to transport Jews to concentration camps where they would all be shoved into crowded trains that were hard to breathe in due to the amount of people there and would be killed off or work in harsh conditions. Believing Hitler's end would come, Ernst decided to escape Germany. Ernst met a Jew who attempted to smuggle his family into America, Ernst saw this as an opportunity to escape Germany and agreed to give the Jew safe passageway. Ernst assumed the identity of Yitz Perlman and shot the Jew, since he was the only one who knew Ernst was a Nazi. Escaping Germany with the now dead Jew's wife and son, Elias Spector, Ernst fled to America.

The Spector family and "Yitz" would become close friends. Eventually, Ernst taught Elias to become a rabbi and when Elias' son, Marc Spector met Ernst, they would become friends as well with Marc thinking of Ernst as an uncle. Ernst met the Spector family many times. Ernst found a way of immortality by stimulating the darkest, most primordial center of his brain by slowly killing Jews on a regular basis slowly and painfully. He did so in his basement. One day, Marc and Ernst agreed to meet at a place. When Ernst was no where to be found, Marc searched around and found a hidden wood door concealing a basement. Marc went down and discovered Ernst was killing a Jew slowly by rapping him up in bandages, tying him upside down to the ceiling and using his knife to chip at him. Ernst tells Spector how he was a Nazi and smuggled his family into America and how if he ever told anyone about this incident, he would be found and killed. Marc escaped by biting Ernst but was traumatized by this event. Later in his life, Marc would site this encounter as the main reason behind his Dissociative Identity Disorder to both his best friend, Jean-Paul "Frenchie" Duchamp and his daughter, Diatrice Alraune.

Ernst became the leader of Société des Sadiques, an organization dedicated to all things sadistic. Wanting Marc Spector - who Ernst knew was Moon Knight - as a member. Ernst manipulated Jake Lockley's sources into leading Spector to the society itself. When Marc arrives to the society, Ernst puts him and other potential members into a series of harsh trials. For Marc, the first trial was to kill a shark infected with rabies, this trial was cleared in 2 weeks after Marc made the shark splash all its water out of the tank. The second: Marc is forced to kill Jess Ebidiah, implicated in what was considered the worst animal torture case in California. Upon Marc reading of this, does something incredibly horrible to him with a crescent dart. While its true Marc did this of his own volition, Ernst put Marc there hoping that Marc would kill Jess or do something really bad to him.

With the third trial, Marc has to tell what he did to Foolkiller, who tells Marc that the mental illnesses he has might as well be treated as incurable diseases. The fourth trial has Marc put on hallucinogenic drugs by Morpheus, the Dream Eater for five hours. For the fifth trial, Marc kills some of the other potential members to become inducted into the society. Eventually, the 666th trial: 1: Fight all the members of the society. 2: Have Diatrice Alraune die. And 3: Serve the society forever after killing an African-American girl. After Jake and Marc argue over what choice to make, Marc decides to face the members of the society.

In the next issue, after facing the society, Ernst drugs with Marc with hallucinogens and tells him that his mental illnesses are lies and that whatever happened to the African American girl is irrelevant. He tells Marc they are going on one last trial and that if he doesn't "understand his illusive commentary and its correlation to the universe around Marc, Diatrice Alraune dies and the Society lives". Ernst goes with Marc on a walk telling him how the Society has violence, sex and destruction for years. He tells Marc that the Society overprices record shops, supplied intranasal drugs, harvested the pleasure of thousands of writhing bodies and put in on covers of Rock and Roll magazines.

They go into a diner where Ernst tells Marc to look upon an awful filthy river before telling Marc to kill a shopkeeper. When Marc refuses, Ernst brings him to a room with a shirtless man, who Marc hallucinates as a monster. Marc calls upon the assistance of Khonshu, Steven and Jake all of whom Marc hallucinates into thinking they are hugging him. Ernst makes Marc snap out of that hallucination before getting slammed into a table by Marc. For rebelling against him, Ernst beats him into submission while demanding Marc to call himself nothing but an errant slave and that Ernst was the first man he ever loved. When Marc refuses, Ernst threatens her with Diatrice.

Marc says that Ernst is the first man he ever lived before Ernst asks him to say "I am no hero, I don't deserve my own infinity. And today is the day I finally give up". Marc kicks Ernst and tells him that he would rather let Diatrice die than grow up in Ernst's sick fable. Marc leaves while Khonshu kills Ernst. After Marc leaves Ernst for dead, it's revealed Ernst released the Sun King from Prison to have him kill Marc should Ernst fail at corrupting Marc. However, this backfires as Sun King and Marc team up and destroy the society. It's also revealed Ernst told a false story to one of his test subjects so he could take on Ernst's mantle and "raise him from the depths" and so that the subject could corrupt the entire world.
