~ Erra to his father. |
Erra is a major antagonist in the MMO third-person shooter Warframe.
Erra is a Sentient Commander and acting leader of the Sentient forces in the Origin System. The son of Hunhow and brother of Natah, Erra continues the genocidal campaign of his people against all remnants of the Orokin Empire. To deal with the Tenno threat Erra allied himself with the former Orokin Ballas, together conquering the Origin System and establishing a new Narmer Empire to bring prosperity to his people.
After realizing just how deceitful and mad Ballas truly is, Erra betrayed him and sacrificed himself so that the Tenno can save his sister from Ballas' hands. Afterwards, his remains were recovered by loyalists and bonded to the Archon Pazuul.
He is voiced by Antonio Greco, who also voices Pazuul.
Appearance[]
Erra is highly unusual for a Sentient, being the one of the few (the others being the Eidolons) seemingly incapable of flight and forced to walk on the ground. His body is skeletal in appearance and his torso very small in comparison to his exceedingly long limbs. His legs are multi-jointed and resemble that of a bird, just like his face is shaped like a bird skull. His hands only feature two long fingers and multiple moving antler-like bones stick out of his head. In spite of his frail appearance, Erra possesses enough physical strength to lift an adult soldier with one arm without any effort.
During the New War, Erra's eyes have been outfitted with orbs that hold the same hypnotic powers as the Narmer Veils.
Personality[]
Erra is a cruel and vicious warlord fueled by his hatred for everything connected to the Orokin and the Tenno. When noticing a wounded, defenseless Dax soldier on Lua slowly trying to crawl away with her life and posing no threat to him, Erra grabbed her by the head, lifted her up to his face and started to slowly crush her head, only dropping her when his sister prompted him to. To Erra it doesn't matter whether someone is not a threat or innocent, if he can connect them with the Orokin even remotely they have to die.
When interacting with his sister Natah Erra is noticably kinder, trying to plead with her to return when encountering her brainwashed and ease her back into their fold when she later returns. At the same time however Erra is willing to harm her when he runs out of patience, always keeping their invasion his priority. When Narmer finally takes control of the system, Erra is proud of his accomplishments and convinced that his people are flourishing under Narmer. His father's attempts to call out his hypocrisy and blindness to Ballas' manipulations are met with disdain, as Erra believes Hunhow to be a failure.
Only later does he realize his father was telling the truth, helping the Tenno and noting with regret that his sister has to die yet again. When informed that his sister may yet be saved, Erra willingly sacrifices himself to allow the Tenno to pass forwards.
Biography[]
Past[]
Nearing the end of the Old War, the Sentients launched a desperate assault on Lua, Earth's moon, having received intel from within the Orokin Empire that the weakness of the Tenno, their greatest threat, was hidden within. Killing them would turn the tides of war back in the Sentient's favor. While the battle raged on the surface and above, Erra and a few Sentients had already managed to venture below to the chambers holding the Tenno's true selves. A group of Tenno and regular Dax soldiers fought them off except for Erra. One lone Dax survived and attempted to crawl to safety, but Erra picked her up with one hand, got her face close to his and started squeezing until her helmet broke.

Erra nearly crushing the skull of a defenseless Dax soldier.
But before he could crush her skull completely, a familiar voice told him to let her go. To Erra's suprise it was his own sister, Natah, now in human form and surrounded by an entourage of Tenno, among them the player character. Erra lamented that someone as great as her could've been changed by the Orokin and asked her if she even recognized him anymore. When she replied "I see the enemy" Erra tried to get her to remember, but she declared herself to be the Lotus as the Tenno around her attacked Erra, seemingly killing him.
Prelude to War[]
Erra[]
Long after the fall of the Orokin Empire, during a time where their remnants the Grineer and Corpus battled for dominance in the Origin System, Natah as the Lotus and her Tenno fought to keep some form of balance so that the innocent can live their lives in uncertain but relative safety. Ballas, an Orokin defector and creator of the Warframes, appeared before her during a vulnerable moment and returned Natah to her pre-Lotus state, the both of them then left for the Sentient headquarters.
After eons of seperation, the two siblings reunited in his throne room. Erra told Natah that their Condrix were nearly ready to transport their troops, prompting her to ask how many battalions of the "Golden Spear" they were facing, likely an elite military branch of the Orokin Empire. Erra noted that she was still having lapses in her memory, ordering Ballas to explain the current situation to her, now enslaved and partially transformed into a Sentient after Natah saved him from a near-fatal injury received in The Sacrifice. Ballas attempted to explain to her, but when he called Erra by name Erra violently pulled at Ballas's leash, who then corrected to calling him "Master Erra".
Natah noticed that they were being listened to by their enemy, but Erra dismissed and allowed them to listen, confident that them knowing about their preparations won't matter.
Scarlet Spear[]
Erra started the first invasion of the New War targeting Earth, the former heart of the Orokin Empire. A fleet of Murex warships were sent to the Veil Proxima, an uncontrolled region of open space where Corpus and Grineer still battle for dominance, likely chosen as a safety precaution. From there, the Murex launched swarms of Condrix transports at various points on the tree-overgrown Earth for reconnaissance.
At the same time, the various Syndicates and resistance movements in the Origin System banded together with the Tenno as front fighters to fight back against the Sentient threat. Organised by Little Duck from the Solaris United resistance network, the Tenno counterattacked both the Murex in space and the Condrix on Earth simultaneously. Since none of their weapons were capable of harming the Murex, a different strategy than simply attacking them was required. Once a Tenno ground team assaulted the Condrix and the Sentients guarding them and swiped the recon data before it could be transmitted back to the Murex, Little Duck and the alliance repurposed that friendly data, then sent it as a trojan horse to a Tenno team on-board a Murex. They then broadcast that harmful code into the Murex's head. While this didn't kill a Murex outright, it caused it immense pain, forcing it to retreat.
Fortunately for the Sentients, Grineer General Sargas Ruk was unwilling to cooperate with the Tenno, convinced they were to blame for the catastrope or that it was some kind of ruse and attacking Tenno and Sentients alike. Despite this unintentional assistance, the Tenno and their allies forced most of the Murex to retreat, ending the first skirmish with their victory.
The Maker[]
Back on board the Sentient Mothership, Natah began to remember her last encounter with Erra. She told Erra that she saw him die, to which Erra responded that she didn't remember everything yet. He explained that her Tenno only wounded him, but with their forces depleting quickly he knew he had failed her and had to retreat. When Natah insisted that the Tenno made sure that he was dead, Erra placed his hand on her shoulder and assured her that it would take time for her to fully heal after everything the Orokin had done to her.
But when Natah pointed at Ballas and asked if he was one of the Orokin, Erra gave him a quick glance and suddenly shoved Natah at his throne, an energy field encompassing and beginning to draw energy from her. Erra simply told her to finish the war, dropping Ballas's leash, who then corrected his posture to stand tall beside him.
Orphix Venom[]
Erra next attempted to weaken both the Corpus and the Grineer militaries by having ships from various fleets boarded by Orphix, smaller variants of the Condrix that retain their troop transport capabilities while also emitting pulses that shut down nearby technology. To ensure that the Tenno couldn't interfere this time, Erra had Natah improve their pulse fields to be so potent that even the mostly organic Warframes ceased to function when they got too close.
Victory seemed assured, but an infested yet surviving family of Orokin known as the Entrati supplied the Tenno with Necramechs, predecessors to the Warframes that trade the agility and speed of a Warframe for heavy firepower. Unaffected by the Orphix fields, the Necramechs proved to be their undoing and a threat the Sentients had not expected to encounter.

Trivia[]
- Erra's name stems from an Akkadian god of mayhem and pestilence, fitting his desire to spread destruction across the Origin System and, just like a plague, doesn't care whether or not his victims are innocent.
- In the gameplay trailer for the full-scale invasion in The New War, Erra is shown introducing himself to non-Sentients by telling them not to be afraid. This is similar to how angels greet humans in the Bible, though it remains to be seen whether this is merely an inspiration or deliberate mockery from Erra.
- Erra is the creator of the Warframe Caliban, a prototype hybrid of Warframe and Sentient. This makes him the only non-Orokin known to have created a Warframe.
