Errtu is a major antagonist of R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving the secondary antagonist of The Crystal Shard, one of the two secondary antagonists of Legacy of the Drow (alongside Vierna Do'Urden), the overarching antagonist of the Paths of Darkness trilogy, and a minor antagonist in The Neverwinter Saga. He is a Balor who sought to find and use the Crenshinibon, a powerful magic crystal, to gain power. During his quest for this powerful magic, he was thwarted by the drow Drizzt Do'urden, who he grew to hate.
Appearance[]
Errtu is a balor, the second most powerful class of the true tanar'ri (chaotic evil demons), after the demon lords. He is twelve feet tall (according to Salvatore's Siege of Darkness), covered in red scales, with a large pair of batlike wings and a tail, and is frequently described as having a horned, ape-like head with a doglike muzzle. When he's in the throes of lust for power, he drools an acidic saliva. His voice is gravelly, guttural, and harsh. His weapons are usually a many-tailed whip, a sword of lightning.
Personality[]
Like all demons, Errtu was incredibly sadistic, and took enormous pleasure in torturing prisoners and servants alike. His torture strategies could be as creative as they were painful. He was also very single-minded on getting what he wanted and would angrily destroy anything or anyone who got in his way. He would, however, occasionally play games with his enemies, to entertain himself, even if there were more pragmatic options.
Errtu was also quite arrogant, thinking himself above all other creatures. However, he was not above serving others to get what he wanted, such as when he served Lolth, or even a much weaker being like Akar Kessell. This shows that he was definitely capable of thinking a few steps ahead and using manipulation.
Synopsis[]
Working for the Liches[]
Errtu once worked for a group of liches who sought to use the power of the sun to create a powerful magical artifact, a prospect Errtu found intriguing.
Trivia[]
- Errtu is the first character to appear in The Legend of Drizzt, appearing in the prologue of The Crystal Shard.
