“ | In my dreams, I heard your footsteps coming closer. In my dreams, I tried to talk to you, and introduce myself. Guardian of the Miracle, and of the Miracle banner, with great pain, I carry the emblem of the Father. I am the hands of bloodied skin, I am the eyes from which our Mother gazes. But nothing I know of you, apart from your cold, nameless visage. Apart from your callused and wounded hands. Apart from the mourning of your deaths. No. I know nothing of you, only the Miracle knows. Now, may your sword full of guilt, with mine of gold, collide. Let them hurt and march in procession. I curse you forever in name. I bless you forever in death. | „ |
~ Escribar to the Penitent One. |
“ | Here we are, my crimson figure and you, on this side of the Dream. The Miracle has turned me into a sentinel of its sacred home. This is my new calling. What do you hope to find here that is not the blinding grey light that tempers our wounds, and the vast horizons that extend without end? The path of paths has ended and, with it, so too has your penance. Now let your body, like mine, be bathed in blood. This will be your final resting place, but no one here will be able to watch over you. | „ |
~ Escribar attempting to stop the Penitent One from reaching the High Wills. |
Escribar is the main antagonist and final boss of the 2019 indie game Blasphemous.
He was voiced by Jim Trainor in English and Rafael Azcarraga in Spanish.
Biography[]
Escribar is the head of the theocracy church of Cvstodia, a land of religion and superstition where a supernatural force referred to the Miracle occurred, shaping all of Cvstodian's guilts and desires, most often in hideous and cruel forms, Escribar, feeling that the people's pleas had not been answered and that the Miracle had forsaken them, turned his throne away from his congregation. This event is referred to as the Age of the Turned Throne. Some time later, the Miracle mafested in Escribar, transforming him into a massive tree. At one point, the tree spontaneously combusted and, over the course of ninety days, burned into nothing but a massive pile of ash, with Escribar's throne at the top. Drove by the Miracle, priests and parishioners attempted to climb the mountain of ash and reach the throne, but all of them failed and were swallowed by the ash, reemerging as beasts called the Punished, Hordes of the Miracle. These included Escribar himself, who became the Last Son of the Miracle, a humanoid with pure burnt red skin.
Sometime before the game's events, the church of Cvstodia had the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, a religious order opposed to the current state of affairs, massacred. The Penitent One, one of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow members killed, was revived by the Miracle. Through the Penitent One's journey across the cursed landscape of Cvstodia, Escribar's voice can be heard telling the Penitent One his story.
Once the challenges of the Three Humiliations are conquered, the Penitent One scales to the top of the Mother of Mothers, where he meets Escribar. Escribar describes his foreshadowing of meeting the Penitent One through a dream of his and challenges him to see if he has it to become the next one to take the throne. After defeating him, Escribar remarks that only the mirror that saw him sleep was shattered and transforms into the Last Son of the Miracle, a massive giant covered in metal. Once defeating it, the skin of the giant's face melts off, and Escribar's true form briefly appears, a large crimson body with five arms, before fading away.
Once defeating Escribar, the Penitent One scales the ash mountain. If the Penitent One has fully upgraded the thorn based on the number of dungeons visited, he reaches the Cradle of Affliction and stabs himself with the Mea Culpa sword, transforming into a tree and becoming the next Last Son of the Miracle. But if the Penitent One has not completed the thorn, he will simply disappear within the mound, leaving only his helmet behind.
Wounds of Eventide[]
If the Penitent One obtains the Apodictic Heart of the Mea Culpa, he is summoned to the other side of the dream by the High Wills upon reaching the top of the Cradle of Affliction. Suddenly, Escribar appears in front of him, having been selected by the Miracle as a sentinel to guard the High Wills. He expresses putting an end to the Penitent One before he could destroy the High Wills, taunting that the dream will be the final resting place for him, yet nobody will be able to watch over him. But with assistance from Crisanta, who protects the Penitent One by blocking Escribar's energy beams, the Penitent One overcomes Escribar and defeats him once more.
Escribar proclaims that if he dies, so will all those who follow and worship him. The Penitent One then uses the Mea Culpa to slice off Escribar's central arm before slicing his body in half, killing him for good.
Appearance[]
Escribar appears as a large man with blood-red skin and long silver hair. He has five arms, four at his sides and the fifth protruding from his chest, underneath his ribcage. In both his regular form and as the Last Son of the Miracle, Escribar wears gray armor, with a white pendant seen hanging around his neck.
