“ | Sister of mine, as I foretold to you, someone is heading towards the forbidden gate. Someone who seeks the purge and excommunication of all that is sacred and rests there. No... No... Do not place your doubts on me. I am ready. | „ |
~ Esdras during his first encounter. |
“ | Sister, I know you are there, even if I can't see you. Hear my plea. After your departure, it is now my turn to prove I'm deserving of our captain's trust. I will not fail Crisanta. And may the greatest of pains devour me if I let the penitence through the door. On your guard, Penitent One. | „ |
~ Esdras before battling the Penitent One. |
Esdras Eclessiae is a supporting antagonist in the indie game Blasphemous.
He was voiced by Alex Jordan in English and Mario Garcia in Spanish.
Biography[]
Along with his sister Perpetva, Esdras found the Anointed Legion, a brotherhood of knights in service to Escribar. The knights are known for wrapping their bodies and weapons with crimson bandages anointed in oils by his holiness. His special hammer is capable of conjuring lightning.
Some time ago, Perpetva perished, leaving Esdras devastated. In his grief of his sister's death, Esdras began "talking" with his deceased sister, something the Anointed Legion found creepy and believed he went mad. Through the Penitent One's adventure, Esdras can be seen silently following him. Twice, he can be seen discussing with his "sister", telling her that he will stop the Penitent One from purging all that is sacred and telling her to rely on him.
After the Penitent One completes the Three Humiliations to open the sacred door of the Mother of Mothers, Esdras ambushes him on the Bridge of the Three Calvaries. He fights similarly to other members of the Anointed Legion fought earlier, except he is able to conduct electricity from his hammer. He is able to slam the ground, producing a shockwave around him, and spin across the arena, summoning bolts of lightning from the sky.
Once he is down to the last third of his health, the angel-like miniboss from the Mountains of Endless Dusk appears to aid Esdras, a manifestation of the Miracle taking the form of Perpetva. She will use the same attacks as before (including a charge and strike from her lance), but attacks less frequently. Only Esdras has to be defeated in order to finish the battle. Once he goes down, Perpetva disappears in blue light and the Penitent One is rewarded with the Taranto to My Sister prayer, enabling the Penitent One to unleash lightning around him.
Wounds of Eventide[]
In the Blasphemous: Wounds of Eventide DLC, if the Penitent One interacts with Perpetva's grave at the Resting Place of the Sister, she will speak to him and give him the Incomplete Scapular. When the Penitent One reaches the Bridge of the Three Calvaries where Esdras normally battles him, he notices the scapular and is blinded by a light, which he recognizes as his sister. He requests the Penitent One meet him in the chapel where the guilt was given shape.
In the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, Esdras tells the Penitent One that his sister's voice told him to help the Penitent One achieve his penance by putting a stop to the Miracle. He gives the Penitent One a key grown from twisted wood, instructing him to head for the Library of the Negated Words.
