Etana is the main antagonist of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Game".
She was portrayed by Katherine Moffat, who also played Vaatrik Pallra in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Biography[]
Etana was a Ktarian who was in charge of a plan to brainwash members of Starfleet. She met Commander Riker while he was vacationing on Risa and the pair had a sexual relationship, during which she introduced him to a holographic game that projected images into the player's mind. The game was both highly addictive, provoking a pleasurable experience in those who achieved results, and capable of altering the brain to make the player serve Etana and her people. Etana sent Riker back to the Enterprise where he began distributing the game among the rest of the crew until nearly everyone on board was under the Ktarians' control.
Once the objective had been achieved, Etana approached the Enterprise in her ship and contacted Captain Picard and his senior officers, most of whom were now under her control. She began issuing them instructions to distribute the game to other ships and starbases, with Picard also offering to distribute them to Starfleet Academy. In this manner, she intended to spread her influence throughout Starfleet.
However, Lieutenant Commander Data was able to use a visual light signal to free the senior staff and most of the other brainwashed crewmembers. He then directed Lieutenant Worf to capture the Ktarian ship with a tractor beam and raise shields. Etana contacted the Enterprise and Picard told her the attempt to capture the Enterprise had failed. Etana threatened to open fire but Worf quickly concluded the Ktarian ship was not powerful enough to be a threat to the Enterprise. Riker, disgusted, ordered the communication broken. Etana's ship was taken to the nearest Federation starbase.
