~ Nicol Bolas explaining the origins of the Eternals

The Eternals or as they are known collectively as the Dreadhorde are a race of zombies from Magic: the Gathering. Originally warriors from Amonkhet who have completed the trials of the five gods, they were rewarded by being killed and reanimated into a powerful undead army. They were created to serve the elder dragon planeswalker Nicol Bolas and were crucial in his plan to regain the power he lost due to the Mending.

Creation[]

After Bolas arrived on Amonkhet and warped the plane's denizens to suit his needs, he created the trial of the five gods as a means to train the people so they could serve him after death. Once a warrior successfully completes the trials, the God of Zeal Hazoret impales the victor with her spear and they are sent to Bolas's great necropolis. They are then embalmed with layers of a special metal known as lazotep that not only makes them more durable, it also allows them to be able to be transported across the multiverse. Despite being zombies, each of the five attributes Bolas wanted in his army; Tactical Thought, Adaptability, Resilience, Ruthlessness and Fanaticism, were stored in the cartouches they had in life allowing them to be just as lethal in death. Though humanoid races like humans, khenras, avens, nagas, and minotaurs were turned into eternals, many animals were also transformed into them as well like cats, hippos, manticores, crocodiles, and demons. They remained in the necropolis until Bolas returned to the plane.

History[]

Hour of Devastation[]

After lots of beings were killed and covered in lazotep, they were stored in Bolas's special necropolis. Once the Hour of Eternity began, the Scarab God was awakened and using its staff, the eternals were also awakened and were sent to slaughter the remaining living beings of Amonkhet. They were brutally effective at this task and Bolas was pleased with how they turned out. One in particular, a minotaur named Neheb, was one of the most famous champions to be resurrected and terrorized some of the remaining survivors until he was slain by Samut and Gideon Jura. After Bolas defeated the Gatewatch and most of the Gods were killed, the fallen deities were embalmed and revived as the God eternals. These four powerful creatures; Oketra, Kefnet, Bontu, and Rhonas would be powerful tools in his future plans.

War of the Spark[]

With his army ready and waiting, a powerful general in Liliana Vess to lead them, and the means to transport them across the Blind Eternities and the means to prevent planeswalkers from escaping in his possession, Bolas was ready to regain his lost power. After his minions weakened the guilds of Ravnica and erected his citadel, Tezzeret traveled to Amonkhet to activate his Planar Bridge to allow the Dreadhorde to march into Ravnica. While they fought their way across the city slaughtering Ravnicans in their wake, their true purpose was eventually revealed. Seeing Bolas topple the Selesnyan guild hall Vitu-ghazi convinced Domri Rade to join the dragon's side. While greeting Bolas, a random eternal grabbed Rade, harvested his spark and killed him, and sent it directly to Bolas after exploding. This allowed Bolas to cast the Elderspell and use the eternals to harvest the sparks of countless planeswalkers with Dack Fayden being one of them. Neheb also survived and arrived on the plane only to be slain again by Samut. This horde managed to unite the guilds of Ravnica and the planeswalkers stuck on the plane to combat them. After Bolas was defeated, the eternals were destroyed on both Ravnica and Amonkhet ending their threat permanently.
