| ~ Ethan preparing to kill Bobby, and his last words before Athena kills him. |
Ethan Copeland is the main antagonist of the 9-1-1 Season 4 finale "Survivors".
He is a former member of the LAPD SWAT team. After being fired due to his instability, he developed an irrational hatred of firefighters and sought to kill as members as possible.
He was portrayed by Ryan Dorsey, who also played Earl Lennon in Justified.
Biography[]
In the past, Ethan was a member of the LAPD SWAT team, and was paired with Kenneth Malone. During a hostage call, Kenneth accidentally fatally shot a hostage, and subsequently quit out of guilt. The LAPD took this an opportunity to fire Ethan, whom they'd been concerned about for a while due to his instability. This drove Ethan insane, especially when he discovered that the hostage taker was only alive because firefighters saved him from overdosing multiple times. He then decided to kill as many firefighters as revenge.
Suspicion[]
Ethan is seen briefly at the end. As the 118 have Sheila Manning and her son Charlie taken away in separate ambulances, Ethan (from on top of a building) fires at the team, shooting Eddie in the shoulder and leaving his life hanging in the balance.
Survivors[]
Eddie is taken to the hospital and survives. Another firefighter is brought in after being shot as well. The 118 begin wearing bulletproof vests and are accompanied by SWAT on calls. Athena and Detective Denvers investigate the case and discover that the sniper’s bullets belong to the LAPD. A SWAT team arrives at Kenneth Malone's house and arrest him.
Meanwhile, Ethan starts a fire in a building and puts in a 9-1-1 call to May, claiming that he's trapped. The 118 arrive at the scene, no longer wearing bulletproof vests as a result of Kenneth’s arrest. However, Athena and Denvers discuss the fact that Kenneth’s gun was found buried in his yard, and they both agree that they don’t think he’s the sniper after all. But the ammo was his, and the only other person who had access to it was Ethan.
The 118 is ordered by the LAPD to evacuate the burning building, but Bobby continues on and rushes into a room because he thinks that he’s found Ethan’s body on the ground. It turns out to be a mannequin. As he looks around in confusion, Ethan steps out from behind him and shoots him. Athena arrives and informs the 118 that Ethan is the sniper. Inside, Ethan demands that Bobby call the rest of the firefighters back into the building, but Bobby refuses.
Despite Buck and everyone else’s protests, Athena insists that they suit her up in firefighter gear so that she can go inside and rescue Bobby. Armed with her gun, she goes in alone. Ethan stalks around the room, telling Bobby that the gunman from the prior hostage situation was only alive because firefighters saved him from overdosing multiple times. LAPD has a sniper on a rooftop, but there isn’t a clean shot through the smokey window. Athena steps into the room, walks through the flames with her gun raised, and she shoots Ethan before he can kill Bobby.
Later, at the hospital, Athena tells Bobby that Ethan didn’t make it.
